Review
A very welcome conciliation between Scotland`s two leading clubs in this, their first organised friendly encounter. Once Celtic had started playing League games in 1890, they had declined offers to play Queen`s Park who hadn`t joined and all eight previous meetings had been in cup competitions. The odd peek of sunshine couldn`t lift the gloom and snow flurries nipped at fingers but on a heavy pitch the two teams gave the meagre crowd a fitting game. Johnny Madden opened the scoring for the home XI when he slickly scored from close range and with both sides attacking in turn, it took the Spiders half an hour to get level, Willie Lambie dancing past Jerry Reynolds to beat Joe Cullen but Joe Cassidy slipped the Celts ahead again just before the interval. Six minutes into the homeward run and Sandy McMahon opened up the visitors` defence to give Jimmy Blessington the easiest of chances for a 3-1 lead. Sixty seconds later and Joe Cullen missed George McGowan`s shot to pull Queen`s back into it. With darkness drawing in, Cassidy scored another in the 75th minute and close to time the indefatigable McGowan scored Queen`s third and Celtic hung on for their win.
Seems to have been a pretty good game on a frozen pitch in murky weather which kept the crowd down. Dyke Berry took a kick on the leg early on and wasn`t much use to Queen`s Park thereafter. He became one of the youngest players capped for Scotland a few months later aged 18. At one stage the ball hit the overhead wires which were being erected for the floodlight game against Clyde a few weeks later and wags in the crowd suggested they get the light on for this match as the gloaming set in.

CELTIC V QUEEN’S PARK – Played at Parkhead in snowy weather. Even play was seen at the start, but gradually the Celtic began to press, and kept the Queen’s Park on the defensive. The Celtic were awarded a foul and scored after a scrimmage. The Queen’s tried hard to get level, and narrowly missed scoring on several occasions. After some dull play, Lambie equalised. The game then became much faster, the Queen’s attacking with great vigour. The Celts also spurted and should have scored at least twice. The second goal came at last, and at half-time the score stood as follows :- Celtic two goals; Queen’s, one. The Celtic went off briskly on resuming, and scored I five minutes. The Queen’s replied with a goal two minutes later. For a time the Celtic kept the Queen’s from passing midfield, sending in warm shots. The Queen’s cleared and attacked without result. The Celtic dashed down again and registered another goal. Corners fell to the home team, but all were cleared. In the last few minutes both teams worked hard. Result :- Celtic, four goals; Queen’s, three.
