SynopsisBooks - Delaney, Jimmy Book pic

Jimmy Delaney is unique in world football in that he won three Cup Winners’ Medals in three different countries in three different decades – quite a feat! He won the Scottish Cup for Celtic before World War Two, the English Cup for Manchester United immediately after the end of the war and the Irish Cup for Derry City in the 1950s. In addition, he won 13 caps for Scotland. “Jimmy Delaney:

The Stuff of Legend” details all his achievements, including the horrendous injury that he suffered on the eve of World War Two and the family tragedy that also came his way. There is an account of his famous goal in the Victory International of 1946, which lit up all of Scotland. He played for seven clubs in total in a career which lasted from 1933-1957. Jimmy was renowned for good sportsmanship and remained a humble man from a small village in Lanarkshire.

Review

This is a wonderfully written book. David Potter is a great writer who has the ability be iconoclastic when it comes to views on Celtic which can irk some readers. However, this book is pure love from the author as he takes us on a journey of the life of Jimmy Delaney, but also on a social history of the lives of the people who lived during the period in which he played. Players like Jimmy lived like the everyman and for those whose origins are from Lanarkshire or Glasgow then this is a great way to immerse yourself in the older days for education or nostalgia (depending on your age).

We are carried along the way with Potter’s exemplary narrative style as he depicts Delaney’s life & career at Celtic and beyond. We also see his take on players and events in as unbiased and fair a manner as you’ll get.

A wonderful read, and another great book from David Potter.
