Biog

Kilmarnock boy Jim Cassidy started his football career at his local club before a very unpopular move to the short-lived Glasgow Hibernian.

In 1889, he joined Bolton where he remained for 9 seasons, making 219 appearances, scoring 101 goals, a great figure even for those early days. Jim Cassidy scored Bolton’s consolation goal in the 1894 FA Cup Final (with one report claiming it as one of the easiest cup final goals of all time). He was said to have had a great shot, and once cracked a post at Molineaux (Wolves) in Dec 1889.

Jim Cassidy played in a single match for Celtic, on loan from the Trotters, his appearance apparently said to have added thousands to the gate of a humdrum league fixture. Celtic won 2-0. It’s a shame he couldn’t have stayed around for longer, but one-off guest appearances in matches like this weren’t unheard of in those days. He’d also similarly had a short period with Carfin Shamrocks.

If he’d remained at Celtic (assuming he had something to offer) then he could have gone on to potentially gain some greater glory, then again maybe he wasn’t good enough as possibly shown in that game or Celtic had already had sufficient quality in that position.

Maybe Bolton is where his heart lay, and likely was a big hero down at that club.

After a move & brief spell at Wigan Athletic, he retired from play in the summer of 1898.
