Ref: Baseball match played at Celtic Park
Date: 28 Sep 1918

Summary

On 28 September 1918, two baseball teams representing the United States Forces based on the Clydeside played an exhibition game at Celtic Park on an international athletics sports day involving Allied Forces.

A crowd of about 12,000 (or 20,000 depending on which report you believe) turned up to watch the days sporting events.

The day’s events were a fund-raiser for forces base hospital in France. Gate receipts were stated to be around £500, then a considerable amount. Apparently the weather wasn’t great on the day so may have impacted the day’s attendance.

This seemed to likely be part of an overall athletics day, with the Daily Record reporting on the baseball match, between the US Navy & the USAF (US Airforce) or as the newspaper described them as “a couple of Yankee Navy teams“. The US Navy defeated the USAF.

The report in the Glasgow Herald, doesn’t even mention the baseball match which is curious! The Daily Record though does bemoan the non-appearance of “tanks & aeros” for the day’s parades at the ground!
