Biog
Son of the legendary Lisbon Lion Steve, Paul Chalmers signed for Celtic in October 1980 after previously playing for Eastercraig Amateurs and signing an ‘S’ form deal with the Bhoys.
A centre-forward Paul made a scoring debut when he came on as a sub in a 4-0 home league win over Morton on 19 February 1985. Likely started amongst the few some nostalgic ideas about Paul Chalmers to follow in his father’s footsteps.
However despite being a prolific scorer at reserve level Paul was to only make a total of four first team appearances and never added to his goal tally.
After his debut his next matches all came in a short burst in Oct-Nov 1985, where Celtic won once v Motherwell 2-1 but lost the next two at home v Dundee Utd (0-3) & away to Aberdeen (1-4). He was subbed on but the thumping defeats likely changed tact for the manager in what turned out to be a classic season as Celtic grasped the title on the last day.
It wasn’t to be for him.
His final match was in the Glasgow Cup Semi-final in Nov 1985, a 3-2 win over Partick Thistle, in which he scored. So a good sign-off from the first team, and meant he played a small part in the title winning season of 1985-86.
He left Celtic Park for St Mirren in September 1986 in a £20,000 deal.
To match up to some of the grand names in our history is difficult for anyone, let alone a legend at the club.
Post-Celtic
After Celtic, he became a mainstay at St Mirren for four years, and was a fair striker for the Paisley side.
He then moved south to Swansea for two seasons, before returning up north to rundown his career with Dunfermline Athletic, Hamilton Academical and Ayr United before hanging up his boots after a spell at East Fife at end of season 1995-96.
