Overview
Following the build up of activity by the Green Brigade ultras at Celtic, a fresh interesting idea was to start a ‘Corteo‘ prior to matches, with the first notable ones around 2011.
A ‘Corteo‘ is basically a procession or crowd of and fans who gather together and walk/march together to the game with lead banners, singing songs etc. This is not new, but the difference to the past is the organised nature of it, and that is what a Corteo is, another idea imported from abroad by the Green Brigade group and adapted to Celtic.
The general set-up sees the numbers marching up London Road to Celtic Park, letting off some tri-colour flares and smoke, something they can’t do once they get into any football stadium, singing Celtic songs and building up atmosphere Their numbers get bigger each season and the noise gets louder. It’s become quite a sight. There have also been very impressive Corteos by the support on away day trips abroad too.
One of the more infamous occasions saw heavy handed policing in 2013 which led to a kettling of the then small number of young supporters which roused quite a vociferous response across the Celtic support. Police heads came out (wrongly) in support of their members who simply made up nonsense, not helping the situation. Overall, it was to be counter-productive to them as it led to further support for & growth of the Corteo both at Celtic and even to other supporters groups in Scotland.
It has become a bit of a tradition and is a very impressive experience for anyone who happens to see it on its way.
