James Docherty had a very brief career with Celtic. He joined the club the season following the glorious league & cup double of 1953-54. Things weren’t to be as great again for Celtic for a long time although the club did enjoy some celebrated success with the back to back League Cup wins of 1956 & 1957.

He was formerly a farm worker and was said to be built with “McGrory’s power and strength“. A good outlook for a centre-forward, and with Jimmy McGrory as the manager, he probably saw part of himself in Docherty.

His debut was a contentious all-ticket game with Falkirk away which saw the Bairns go down to nine men after losing left-back Ian Rae being sent off in the first half after a clash with Charlie Tully. Second half saw the future Rangers player Bobby Morrison off the pitch with cartilage problems.

The press said the pitch was showered in bottles, but the Celtic Supporters’ Association counted only four. The CSA decided to get the fans to boycott the next league game away against Falkirk as punishment to that club’s management for poor handling of the proceedings.

James Docherty later played for Celtic in a match defeating Partick Thistle in the Glasgow Cup.

However his last major match was a league game against Rangers on 24th Sep 1955 as an outside-right in a 0-0 draw:

Smith and Docherty joined in a move which ended in [Rangers goalkeeper] Niven performing acrobatics to divert the winger’s shot“.

It was a brief Celtic career and he next moved to Alloa first on loan then permanently. He left Celtic undefeated in his record, but as with many others over this era, he sadly underachieved at what was a mostly underachieving Celtic.

He passed away in 2007.

James (Peam) Docherty played in the 50s for the Hoops and then moved to Alloa.
Peam has been diagnosed as terminally ill and I would like to pay tribute to the most generous gentle person I know. A man who lived the dream.
When I was a lad 11 or 12 and going to games with his sons he always taught us the virtues of supporting Celtic, why we’re better than the rest without running down any other club, and that has stayed with me even to this day.
Peam is one of the finest people I have ever had the pleasure to know. The Bhoys (his sons) who I consider to be friends are also some of the finest people I know and that is down in no small measure to their Father.
I know he is missed at the 5s on a Friday where he would not only collect the money but would laugh at how bad some of the guys would be.
God bless you Peam we pray for you.
