SummaryeSports - The Celtic Wiki

There’s no point in older generations complaining, eSports is big business now and whether you agree or not if it can be categorised as a sport or not is best parked. There’s plenty enough ‘sports’ out there that require less endurance and strength than even many eSports. Money talks, and that in itself is what has stamped eSports as sport.

With the strength of the e-football games, and the maturing of young kids who grew up on it all, now earning as adults, they have turned this all into a professional career for the best players. The league set-ups are gathering attention, and football clubs have decided that if you can’t beat them then join them, so each club has its own e-Sports football side.

Celtic’s jump into this began in 2018, joining the eFootball.Pro set-up. Streamed and televised matches are big business, but hopefully won’t cannibalise the other youth sports around. It’s all just getting off the ground.

The Hoops join four other big European clubs as founder members of the new competition.

Celtic have joined forces with Gerard Pique’s eSports company and video game giant Konami to become founders of a new video gaming league. The club recently linked up with the Japanese company as part of a commercial partnership for the Pro Evolution Soccer game. And it’s now been taken a step further as Celtic has agreed to become one of the founder members of the eFootball.Pro league. They join Barcelona, Schalke and Monaco in the competition which will take place on the PES platform.

Gerard Piqué, founder and president of eFootball.Pro, said: “It’s great news that Celtic joins our competition. I have faced them several times as a player and I know that they will show in eSports the same integrity they display on the pitch. “Having a club with so much history will give us the necessary values to make our league a model in the sector.” The move comes after the Parkhead side took part in a eFootball.Pro invitational last August and they will now be recruiting two professional video game players to represent the club in the competition.
Gordon Kaye, Head of Business Development at Celtic, said: “Following our partnership with Konami, creating a PES team to challenge for the inaugural eFootball.Pro title is an exciting first step into the evolving world of eSports and we look forward to competing against top international teams.” Pique’s company has been set up to professionalise football eSports and more clubs are expected to be added to the league in the near future.
