Background
Celtic fans have gathered a reputation for camararderie, humour and quick wit, and one of the more modern illustrations of this is the social media twitter hashtag of #ThatsNotAKnife that popped up in August 2015.
Drawn against Turkish side Fernerbache in the Europa League, a few idiots from the Turkish side decided to post inflammatory selfie pictures whilst holding knives and threatening attacks (covering their faces too).
Previously, travelling fans from various clubs have faced knife attacks in Turkey.
In return, Celtic fans started posting humorous pictures mocking the original Turkish posters.
Basically, the Celtic fans’ pictures were a tribute to the classic one joke movie “Crocodile Dundee” where the lead character on being confronted by an attacker with an knife stated “that’s not a knife (pulling out his own machete), this is a knife!”.
Celtic fans posted pictures of fans holding up spoons (a mocking tribute from the Simpsons), household objects, Turkish Delight sweets and so on.
Basically, the Celtic fans were humiliating them. This went viral, with media and other club fans tweeting this across the globe with many tributes and chuckles.
It was a wonderful advert for the Celtic fans, and the culture was enhanced.
Many Turks joined in and mocked their now disowned counterparts. A wonderfully funny experience, and a great experience for all who followed on social media.
As for the trip for those who travelled to Istanbul? No problems, no trouble, no issues. Just a lot of camaraderie between the supports.

CELTIC fans have taken to Twitter to respond to daft threats from Turkish hooligans with a bit of typical Scottish banter. Pictures surfaced on social media of two idiotic, scarf-wearing Fenerbache fans brandishing knives and telling Celtic fans that they were for them when they visit Turkey for the two side’s Europa League clash in December. Decent Fenerbahce fans and supporters of many other clubs have also got involved with their own light-hearted banter and this Twitter phenomenon looks set to continue with #ThatsNotAKnife now starting to trend.
