BiogHealy, James - Pics

A quick and strong outside-right James Healy signed for Celtic in April 1924 after an earlier trial with the Bhoys.

He was brought in as Andy McAtee’s potential successor, just as Motherwell thought that they might have got him.

Signed from junior outfit Shieldmuir Celtic, his competitive debut came on 8th November 1924 at Parkhead when a rampant Celtic destroyed Kilmarnock 6-0 in a one-sided league encounter. He was totally overshadowed by fellow debutant Willie Fleming who scored four goals on the day for an incredible start to his own career.

However, Healy only made one further senior appearance for the Hoops in a 3-1 defeat to Queen’s Park in the league the following week after his debut. Celtic’s form had started to falter around this time, and slipped badly from this point leading to Celtic to fall way behind in the league title chase to finish well behind eventual league title winners Rangers.

He was subsequently loaned to Motherwell (just two league matches), Stenhousemuir and Montrose.

He was freed by Celtic in April 1925 and went on to sign for Plymouth Argyle with whom he played for five seasons.

He passed away in 1969 back home in Craigneuk.
