In The Big Wide World: In this month Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito dies.

The SAS storm the Iranian Embassy in London after a six day siege. Six members of the Democratic Revolutionary Movement for the Liberation of Arabistan had taken 26 Embassy staff hostage on April 30th. In the SAS siege all but one of the hostage takers is killed. One hostage died in the assault and another earlier in the siege.

In Florida 35 people die in the Sunshine Skyway Bridge disaster after a freighter collides with a section of the 5.5 mile Tampa Bay bridge.

A Bit of Culture: Films released in 1980 include 'The Empire Strikes Back', 'Airplane!', 'The Fog', 'Friday The 13th', 'The Shining' and 'The Blues Brothers'.

Top of the UK single chart at the time of the cup final was Dexy's Midnight Runners with 'Geno'. Other No1's in early months of 1980 included The Jam 'Going Underground', Pretenders 'Brass In Pocket', Blondie 'Atomic', Kenny Rodgers 'Coward of the County' and the Detroit Spinners 'Working My Way Back To You'.

Albums released in 1980 included The Police 'Regatta De Blanc', Joy Division 'Closer', Bruce Springsteen 'The River', The Jam 'Sound Affects' and AC/DC 'Back In Black'.

On TV 'Who Shot JR?' is the big question posed by US soap Dallas. Making its UK TV debut is 'Family Fortunes' while the last episodes of Hawaii Five-O and the Rockford Files are filmed.
