Gary Irvine joined the Celtic Pro Youth Academy as a 13 year old.
He was taken on by Celtic as a 16 year old and immediately went into the U18 team as a defender. Able to play at right back, right midfield or central midfield he progressed steadily moving up to the Reserves in 03/04. He was also picked for the Scotland U19 squad. and awarded a further 2 year contract to June 2006. He made an unofficial debut in the Friendly against Fulham in July 2005 but was unfortunate to pick up a nasty foot injury against Leicester in the next pre-season Friendly. This kept him out till returning to the Reserves in late October. He played consistently well for the Reserves and certainly looked like a good prospect.
In 06/07 he went on loan to Ross County till January 2007. continuing the rest of the season with the Reserves with one bench spot against Hibernian at the end of the season.
With a clear desire to progress and having had the taste of first team football he started pre-season 07/08 with the senior squad and went on the pre-season tour to the USA. On his return with little prospect of progress to the first team at Celtic he joined Owen Coyle's St Johnstone for an unknown fee and a 2 year contract.
He has done well at St Johnstone and is a valued player there at right back, helping them to promotion in 2009.

Joined Dundee in July 2010 after surprisingly being released from St. Johnstone.

DEFENDER Gary Irvine has left Celtic after coming through the ranks of the club. The 22-year, who spent the first half of last season on loan at Ross County, made a number of pre-season first-team appearances back in 2005, but suffered a broken foot against Leicester City.

More recently, he came on for the last half-hour of Celtic's 5-1 victory over Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road in July 2007.

While on loan at Ross County, he helped them win the Challenge Cup last November when they beat Clyde on penalties.
