…On The Wing – Song

Songs and Anthems | Legends and Supporters

Lyrics

When you score, you make the Celtic sing

Jota on the wing, Jota Jota on the wing

Every time you’re on the ball we know

There’s gonna be a goal

Our superstar from Portugal

*Repeat*

Der der der der der der der der…

 [Repeat ad nauseam]

Background

Started in around season 2022/23 by the Ultra groups at Celtic, mainly in homage to the popular Portugese player Jota.

The chant takes its tune from the early noughties euro-pop sensation Dragostea Din Tei by O-Zone, not that anyone seems to have every heard of this tune before hand.

The song found fame when, in March 2023, Scottish singer & Celtic fan Ellie Dixon made a beautiful cover version, and then performed the tune live on BBC 5 Live, with Patrick Kielty. He had asked her to perform the football tune for Celtics fans live on morning radio.

She was so good, that a fully recorded version was made for people to download! Others even joined in and added their own musical accompaniment to the tune too. It had gone viral!

Jota himself said:

“I’ve listened to it, shout out to the people that made it. It was very talented what they did. I’m very grateful to hear that and I hope people had a good time hearing it. It says a lot about what Celtic is. Once you get that feeling, everything just feels amazing! I’m just happy that it happened. In the end, if the fans can be happy and one have our backs helping us to achieve our goal, then everything will be better.”

A singer-songwriter has wowed Celtic fans with her version of the ‘Jota on the Wing’ chant.

Ellie Dixon performed a cover of the popular fan song celebrating the Portuguese winger on BBC Radio 5 Live on Saturday and it has become an instant hit with Hoops supporters.

Sung along to the tune of Dragostea Din Tei by Moldovan Eurodance group O-Zone, Cambridge-born Ellie was amazed by the response from fans after singing it on the radio show.

She wrote on Twitter: “Shout out to the Celtic FC fans sharing my cover of Jota on the Wing from @bbc5live this morning! (if you’d like a full recording on twitter/ Instagram I can make that happen).”

One fan replied: “Absolutely outstanding you have a lot of new fans after this morning.”

Another said: “You do realise you’ve just been adopted into The Celtic Family right?”

In reference to Sunday’s Viaplay Cup final, another said: “Better be watching tomorrow, Ellie! Great cover!”

The singer responded: “I will absolutely tuning in!”

Drums added to Ellie Dixon’s Jota on the Wing – ‘Man, this just gets better and better”

“Man, this just gets better and better!…” says Celtic Tour Guide Davie McLaughlin and Ellie Dixon’s acoustic version of her take on The Celtic supporters Jota on the Wing after the initial update from rapper Bemz, Ellie’s version of Jota on the Wing is now subjected to a third update this time with drums added!

Here’s some feedback from Celtic fans…

“Fantastic I’ll be singing it all day now,” Tony…”Love it, love it,” Maura McColgan…”That is brilliant,” Chris Donnelly…”I’d buy that album,” Just some guy…”we’ve got a wee drummer now too,” Mouse…”Fantastic,” Paudie Murphy…”Brilliant. Needs to go on iTunes,” JmpD67…

New versions of Jota on the Wing emerge as Ellie Dixon wants Celtic Park gig…

Ellie Dixon’s Jota on the Wing has new versions from Rapper Big Bemz and also Electronic DJ Martin Morgan and Ellie wants to play live at Celtic Park in front of 60,000 Celtic supporters…

There simply has to be an on-stage collaboration in the offing, after Scottish rapper Big Bemz added some superb lyrical layers to Ellie Dixon’s outstanding acoustic version of the Celtic support’s celebration of our Superstar from Portugal, Jota’s terrace chant.

And if that’s not enough the Glasgow based, Celtic supporting DJ Martin Morgan has released his own electronic take Ellie Dixon’s cover of Jota on The Wing – Our superstar from Portugal, which would be ideal for George Bowie’s GBX audience which is on Clyde 1 after the football on a Saturday evening. Can’t see this one getting an airing though!

Ellie’s version went down a storm after she initially performed Jota’s song – adapted from MC Finchy’s Ozone Bounce – on Radio Five Live’s Patrick Kielty show last weekend. And the singer with an outstanding singing voice then promised a longer version, something she released on social media just prior to Celtic winning the League Cup Final against theRangers last weekend.

Now rapper Bemz, who quickly became a bit of a cult hero among Celtic fans after wearing the Hoops on stage for his BBC Introducing performance last November, and also wore a Lisbon Lions anniversary shirt for his performance at the Reading and Leeds Festival, has also added to Ellie Dixon’s craft with some lyrical input of his own. With a most topical and delicious reference pointing to Celtic’s Glasgow Derby League Cup Final win from the weekend.

“Yo, see the green and white on my chest, you know that I rep for the greatest.

“Us been the one from the ages, so dem man they need to have patience.

“When the see the boys in green coming down the wing, Taylor to Jota, we do it proper.

“2-1 to the Bhoys, they can’t stop us.”

Born in Nigeria, the rapper grew up in London before moving to Glasgow in his teenage years and was rewarded for his rise to fame – and representing the club across the country – when Celtic asked him to become involved with last year’s Christmas edition of the Celtic View.

Now all we need is a collaboration between the pair, and to see them performing Jota on the Wing at Celtic Park on a matchday. If we’re not getting too far ahead of ourselves, should Celtic win the league, then a performance on Trophy Day would be the ideal time to see that happen.

And why stop at just one song. It would be great to hear Ellie Dixon add her musical take on a few a few more from the Celtic songbook. Grace and The Fields of Athenry might be a good place to start – and perhaps Bemz can add his own touch of magic to those songs too.
