When at Celtic, Ewan Otoo was a young Scot born player of Ghanian descent who went on to make a name for himself as the captain of the Celtic ‘B’ side. Another one for the future, with hopes he could make the step-up.

He won appearances in two firendly in July 2021 in new manager Ange Postecoglu’s reign, firstly in a 3-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday and then in a surprise 1-0 defeat to Preston North End.  Despite that latter defeat, his performance was taken as to be one of the stand-outs in the match.

The problem for him was that Celtic had a raft of central defenders already ahead of him in the queue for first team places, most notably Carter-Vickers and Starfelt, with Jenz brought in on loan and Stephen Welsh promoted from the youth sides in the rotation for places. Once Kobayashi  was bought in December 2022, it was clear that Ewan Otoo’s career would now be away from Celtic in what was a very competitive squad that had stepped up heavily under Postecoglu with far higher demands than at the time he had signed.

“Ewan is a young boy with fantastic energy, he’s trying to make his mark in the game at that level, so he will certainly get the experience of that.”
Danny Lennon (Clyde manager, 2021)

He moved to Dunfermline on 22 June 2023 as too difficult to break thru at Celtic.

16-year-old Ghanaian teenager Ewan Otoo signs pro contract with Celtic

Scottish Premier League giants Celtic have signed Ghanaian teenager Ewan Otoo on a two-year deal.

Otoo has already represented Scotland at the U16 level.

He started playing at Eastwood Boys Club and got spotted by Celtic scouts who pushed for his signing.

”I started playing for Celtic at the age of eight and have been featuring regularly in their youth team but only signed a two-year professional contract a couple of months ago to play at the youth level,” the 16-year-old told

”The professional contract is signed at this level and I hope to excel so I can feature prominently at the senior level.”

Celtic’s B team captain, Ewan Otoo’s contract is set to conclude this summer. Latest reports reveal that Otoo has turned some heads down south by attracting the attention of a few Premier League and Championship sides ahead of the January transfer window.

The 20-year-old has impressed many with his performances in the Lowland League this season, which has drawn many eyes towards him. Reports indicate that Aston Villa and Fulham, who play in the English Premier League, have shown interest in the Hoops player, while Burnley, who are currently top of the Championship, have also had their head turned by the young player.

Otoo, who is eligible to play for either Scotland or Ghana, has demonstrated the level of his abilities by being an extremely versatile player, able to hold down several different positions in a defensive set-up. He can easily sit at centre-back, move over to left-back, or even rest in front of the defensive line and become a centre-defensive midfielder. The capacity to be so versatile at such a young age will most certainly demonstrate the potential for Otoo, and his ability to fit into any set-up he is introduced to.

The 16-year-old Scotland-based Ghanaian footballer, Ewan Otoo, who signed a two-year deal for Scottish giants, Celtic, a couple of months ago, helped his club to defeat Airdrie a Division Two club in Scotland 1-0 in a friendly match

The match played on Friday, July 12, formed part of Celtic’s pre-season training ahead of the 2019/2020 league season which begins next month.

Otoo, who was deployed to the left-back position did not only excel in his maiden appearance for the Scottish giants but also played the entire 90 minutes for the club at their training centre at Lennoxtown under the watch of Celtic manager, Steven McManus.

After the match, Otoo expressed satisfaction with his performance.

“My first match for Celtic went very well. I was asked to take the role of the left-back position and we won 1-0. I really had a good game at the left-back and as a result, I have been promoted to the reserve squad,“ Otoo told Graphic Sports Online via telephone.

He added: “My manager Steven McManus was full of praise for my performance and said I had a lot to offer the team in future, so I should remain focused on my training.”

Otoo, who started playing football at a tender age for Eastwood Boys Club, has already featured twice for Scotland’s U-16 team but has expressed his desire to represent Ghana in future.

“I started playing for Easttwood Boys Club at a tender age before Celtic signed me to play at the U-16 level for a period of two years.

Before then, I was called to play at the youth level in Scotland but in future, I want to play for the national team at the senior level because Ghana is my root and I need to help put our international football on a higher pedestal,” Otoo said.
