ACTION AGAINST THE CELTIC FOOTBALL CLUB

Newspaper article from Tues 7th March 1905

Sheriff Balfour yesterday closed the record in an action taken by a professional football player named Andrew Forbes McPherson, 74 Dempster Street, Greenock, against the Celtic Football and Athletic Company (Limited), Parkhead, Glasgow, concluding for £150. Pursuer was engaged from May 1902 to May 1904 in the capacity of professional football player by the defenders. During the close season he received £2 per week, and during the playing season £3 per week. At the end of last season, he alleges, he was put on the retained list by the defenders for the current season. He further avers that notwithstanding this the defenders declined to pay him his wages, and the secretary in a letter to him, dated 6th September 1904, took up the position that pursuer was on the open transfer list. He states that he has always been willing and anxious to play fro the Celtic Club and had on several occasions told them of this. He had received no intimation that he was not to be asked to sign on for the present season, and he now claimed as damages, a year's wages, amounting to £156. The defenders state that at was by a mistake that pursuer's name appeared in the list of players to be retained by them this season, and when the error was discovered his name was transferred to the open transfer list. they aver that pursuer was perfectly well aware that he had not been engaged by them as a player, and that he could not play for them during the present season, and he could have got a new situation if he had chosen to apply to other clubs. He also knew that an essential condition of his being engaged by the defenders as the signing by him of a professional form at the beginning of the season. Pursuer, they state, had appealed to the Scottish Football Association, and they had declined to interfere in the matter, and defenders point out that the Association's decision in the matter of appeals was final.
