Robertson, Scott - The Celtic Wiki

Out of nowhere, Scott Robertson was handed a surprise debut aged just 18 in December 2019 v Cluj in an admittedly dead rubber match (as Celtic had already qualified to the KO stages) but he performed well in the holding role alongside Ntcham. He used the ball well and didn’t look out of place, so a fine start and a proud moment, although he was overshadowed by the then young 16-year-old Karamoke Dembele who was the top star of the youth squads at the time.

Celtic captain Scott Brown was impressed with the then young Scott Robertson:

He’s the template for how young ones should approach making that step up. He’s humble, but at the same time isn’t scared to put himself about and show his qualities on the training pitch.

A product of the youth system, having been at the club for ten years it was a great moment, but further opportunities were becoming hard to come by.

He was soon sent out on loan to Gillingham for match time experience. Robertson was highly rated by his loan club Gillingham with their manager Scott Evan stating:

“Scott is an outstanding young player who has developed nicely in the last few months“.

However, Scott Robertson was fast tracked back to Celtic after the shambles following a trip to Dubai in the next season during the covid pandemic that led to 13 players, the manager and his assistant being quarantined.

It frustrated everyone to see Scott Robertson’s development stunted by bringing him back prematurely in January 2021 only to then not play him, which to many reflected the poor management going on at Celtic during that covid impacted season.  He was quickly sent out again, this time to Doncaster on loan after just a month. Not long after, Celtic’s manager Neil Lennon was cut.

However, hopes for opportunities under new Celtic manager Ange Postecoglu were to no avail, and with the side progressing with young players like Ralston and Welsh, it was clear Robertson would have to now look beyond Celtic for first team action. He won a number of games at Crewe when at loan for season 2021-22 but was sent back to Celtic after a match injury led to an operation.

He was not wholly out of the manager’s sights, and he won a place in a Celtic XI playing on tour in Sydney (Australia) in November 2022 played during the break for the World Cup in Qatar.  On the other hand, the midfield ensemble in the squad was now bloated following the arrival of a number of international players (e.g. Mooy, Hatate, Maeda, Abildgard etc).

He was soon after on return back to Scotland told that he was to be released in the January 2023 window, providing him an opportunity to kick-on at another club.

He signed for Fleetwood Town in January 2023, which was under the team management of ex-Celtic player Scott Brown.

We wished him the best.

Quotes

“The 18-year-old was the primary beneficiary of Lennon’s selection shuffle, making his first-team bow in midfield. A comparatively unknown quantity alongside academy poster boy Karamoko Dembele and Armstrong Oko-Flex, all eyes were on the teenager given this fixture held little other intrigue for Celtic fans. Dembele’s second-half cameo made him the youngest player ever to feature for the club in Europe. Robertson, meanwhile, was neat, tidy and unfazed by the step in a display that bodes well for his future prospects. He slotted in next to captain-for-the-night Olivier Ntcham as a midfield anchor and can return to Glasgow safe in the knowledge he acquitted himself admirably. Perhaps his eye-catching display will even earn him his own Wikipedia page.”

SCOTT Robertson will make his Celtic debut tonight (Thursday) as the Hoops complete their Europa League group-stage campaign with a game against CFR Cluj in Romania.

The 18-year-old midfielder is of nine changes to the starting XI which Neil Lennon has made from the side which lifted the League Cup on Sunday.

Hampden goal hero, Christopher Jullien will partner Nir Bitton in the centre of the defence, while Lewis Morgan also retains his place, though Leigh Griffiths is expected to lead the line.

Celtic have already qualified for the last 32 of the competition, winning Group E with four wins and a draw from their previous fixtures. That includes a 2-0 home win over Cluj, when Odsonne Edouard and Mohamed Elyounoussi were on target.

This is also the Hoops’ second visit to Romania this season, having played Cluj back in August in a Champions League qualifier. In the game at the Dr Constantin Radulescu Stadium, the sides drew 1-1, with James Forrest cancelling out Mario Rondon’s opener.

With Scott Brown suspended for tonight’s match, Olivier Ntcham will captain Celtic, while Craig Gordon will be between the sticks.

Kick-off in Romania is 5:55pm (Celtic Park time). All the pre-match build-up and live updates will be available on the official Celtic Twitter – @CelticFC

CELTIC: Gordon; Bauer, Bitton, Jullien, Bolingoli; Ntcham, Robertson, Morgan; Johnston, Griffiths, Sinclair.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon was full of praise for Hoops academy graduate Scott Robertson, who made his debut for the club against CFR Cluj in Romania. The 18-year-old was handed a starting role alongside stand-in captain Olivier Ntcham in defensive midfield, and acquitted himself well despite the hosts running out 2-0 winners on the night.

Revealing he had been shocked to learn of his place in the starting line-up, Robertson felt he gave a good account of himself.

“I was taken aback on Wednesday when I knew I was starting. I was a wee bit nervous, but mostly it was excitement during the day.”

BHOY’S LIFE Scott Robertson chose Celtic over Rangers and was once sent off by his dad

SCOTT ROBERTSON’s dad has opened up on the Celtic starlet’s decision to choose the Hoops over Rangers.

In an interview with The Athletic, Stuart Robertson also revealed his boy nearly quit football to pursue a career in GOLF.

Scott, 18, had his first action in the Hoops in the 2-0 defeat to Cluj in the Europa League, with gaffer Neil Lennon praising his performance.

Now Stuart – in Romania for last night’s clash – has lifted the lid on how the youngster had to choose between the Old Firm rivals as an eight year old.

Reflecting on an overseas U-9 tournament with Celts, he said: “At that point he had a decision to make and he decided to stay at Celtic.

“So aye, if he went away with Rangers at that time he would have said, ‘I’ll stay with these boys’, as you build an affinity with them with that time away, but he’s been at Celtic ever since.”

Four years later the midfielder’s interest in football was diminishing.

Stuart added: “Scott’s always been into sport.

“Golf, tennis, football, we actually thought at one point he might be a better golfer than footballer.

“He was probably about 12 and getting fed up with the football, and wanted to concentrate on golf; he was doing really well, going around with tours when he was 11.

“His heart just wasn’t in football.

“We managed to not cut (football) off completely, and he didn’t drop out.

“We eventually got him back in and encouraged him to look at it in a new light, to try new training drills which we practised outside it, and he started loving it again, getting on well with all the boys.”

Stuart – a goalkeeper in the amateur and junior ranks – also told how he once sent off his boy during a game.

He said: “When he was young, about seven and still with Lenzie, I was reffing a game he was playing in.

“He and another wee boy went in for the ball and they were both bad tackles, they then each of them took a punch at each other.

“So I red-carded the first boy, and then red-carded Scott, and I felt gutted by it, there was a big lump in my chest doing it.

Celtic midfielder hailed ‘outstanding young player’ after being recalled from loan spell

Celtic youngster Scott Robertson has received a glowing report card after being recalled from his loan spell at English League One side Gillingham.

The 19-year-old midfielder, who signed for the Gills in September in what had been expected to be a season-long loan, made 19 appearances during his four month stay and made his final outing in the 1-0 defeat to Burton Albion at the weekend.

Robertson has been brought back help Celtic through the ongoing Covid crisis after 16 players and staff, including manager Neil Lennon, were required to self-isolate after defender Christopher Jullien tested positive for the virus upon the club’s return from a training camp in Dubai.

His return came too late to feature in the 1-1 draw against Hibs on Monday night but he could go straight into the Hoops squad for Saturday’s Premiership game against Livingston at Celtic Park.

Gillingham boss Steve Evans was delighted with Robertson’s contribution over his loan spell, telling the club’s website: “Scott is an outstanding young player who has developed nicely in the last few months. He has returned to Celtic and we wish him all the very best.”

Evans had previously singled out the Celtic midfielder for praise after a recent 4-1 rout of Rochdale.

“We played with a lot of intensity and that is what was most impressive today and to be fair to Josh Eccles and Scott Robertson, I love them, they get on the ball and they were both fit,” he said.

Robertson’s only previous first team appearance for Celtic came in the Europa League loss to Cluj in Romania in December 2019.

CQN Magazine on 5th December 2022 Latest NewsSCOTT ROBERTSON returned to training with the Celtic first-team squad at the end of last week.

The midfielder has yet to kick a ball in the top side this season and is out of contract in the summer. He will be able to talk to interested clubs at the start of next month.

Robertson made a fleeting 23-minute appearance after replacing David Turnbull in the 2-1 loss to FC Sydney in Australia 18 days ago.

However, there appears to be no movement on the contractual front for the 21-year-old anchorman who had had previous loans spells at Doncaster Rovers, Gillingham and Crewe.

IT TAKES TWO…Scott Robertson and Aaron Mooy prepare for training earlier in the season. Images courtesy Celtic TV.He was returned early to the Hoops in March after suffering a cartilage injury at League One Crewe.

Thankfully, Robertson, who was introduced to the first team as an 18-year-old by Neil Lennon in a 2-0 loss to Cluj in Romania in a Europa League outing in December 2019, made a full recovery.

But a first-team place appears to be a forlorn hope for the Lenzie-born player, especially after Ange Postecoglou brought in two holding midfielders in Aaron Mooy and Oliver Abildgaard in the August transfer window.

Yosuke Ideguchi arrived along with J-League colleagues Reo Hatate and Daizen Maeda at the turn of the year and James McCarthy had been recruited the previous summer after leaving Crystal Palace.

Robertson has made 58 appearances across the board during his temporary stints in the lower reaches of English football. His future at the champions remains clouded in mystery although he does appear to figure in the manager’s thinking with his involvement with the squad at Lennoxtown on a daily basis
