“I’ve never played with a more powerful player than Jeffrey Schlupp, such power and speed like I’ve never seen before.”
Former Leicester teammate Andrej Kramaric
Jeffrey Schlupp arrived at Celtic as a stop-gap loan deal. Celtic had re-signed Kieran Tierny on a pre-contract but Arsenal refused to release him early, so a stop-gap until the summer was needed to back-up Greg Taylor for the left-back role. With heavy demands expected for the squad having made the play-offs in Europe v Bayern Munich to be played, Celtic were still on course for a potential treble having already secured the league cup & were comfortably ahead in the league title challenge.
Schlupp was German by birth albeit was raised in England. He was now an aged player of 32, but in his career, Schlupp had been part of the incredible Leicester side (alongside current Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel) that had shocked the football world to lift the English league against all the odds. He had been a regular player in the EPL for the past ten years, so arrived as a vastly experienced player and reputedly quite versatile, able to play in various roles when required to.
From the off, his talent and ability were clear to all, fitting in effortlessly in an admittedly already strongly performing Celtic squad. As a measure of his success he was ahead of Greg Taylor who had incredibly out fought a myriad of players for the left back role prior to Schlupp’s arrival. Taylor was running down the final month of his contract and this was a wake up call.
Schlupp grabbed a goal in a 5-2 away win v St Mirren, opening the scoring with a great low range long shot. He later set up a goal for Yang from an excellent cross, and the support generally opined that Schlupp was the man who could replace Taylor for the rest of the season.
However, a really poor performance in a 3-2 defeat at home to Sevco (Mar 2025) with one notable podcaster describing his performance as the laziest he had seen by a Celtic player for a generation (hyperbole to many). He then followed it with a series of underwhelming performances, which indicated to many that his initial fine form was more a blip than the norm, although in fairness at his relatively mature age for a footballer, he was never going to be the most dynamic of players.
Taylor regained the first choice pick for the first team, and Schlupp had to accept second choice status. Still, he was given further opportunities being subbed on across a number of matches, however the never re-discovered that initial fine form. If anything, the more cynical opined that he looked disinterested with one foot out of the door, having accepted the inevitable. In fairness, he generally gave a decent performance and played to his best, albeit his form & timing seemed to diminish sharply in his last few matches in the knowledge he was wrapping up his time at Celtic.
On the day that Celtic lifted the league trophy in May 2025, his parent club Crystal Palace finally won their first ever major trophy, the FA Cup, in a shock victory over Man City in the final. So an interesting & double celebration day for the player.
As a player, there was no denying he had a decent pedigree and started well, but he definitely didn’t convince that he was what Celtic needed moving forward.
[…He left Celtic at the end of season 2024/25 with the best wishes of all. ….]
