Glasgow-born Gerry Sweeney started his profesional football career with Celtic, joining them from Johnstone Burgh at the start of the 1964-65 season as an inside forward. He failed to make a single first-team appearance for the Bhoys. He played Reserve team football making a good number of appearances with the Reserves and was well thought of.

He moved on to Morton when offered a contract by them and went straight into the first team at inside left. He signed for Bristol City for £22,000 in June 1971 as a defender. Also capable of playing in midfield, Gerry quickly established himself as a regular with the Robins and he would go on to make more than 300 appearances for the English club, even helping them into First Division.

Gerry would spend a decade with Bristol before moving to York City in 1981.
