Teletext – Ceefax and Oracle

Misc

Details

Ref: Teletext Service on TV
aka: Ceefax (BBC), Teletext, Oracle (ITV)
Era: mostly 1980s-early 2000s

Overview

Another of the old archaic systems which was an interim medium before the rise of the internet.

Teletext/Ceefax was a system available using the red button on your TV remote control and was used for some succinct news stories and sports stories.

Back in the day it was an easy but often frustrating way to get match & score updates. Every single pub in the country used to have the Ceefax pages up on their TV whilst the sports radio broadcasts were on to give patrons the up-to-date scorelines, and saved them annoying the bar staff for the scorelines!

One of the more curious experiences for many people was watching penalty kick shoot-outs via this service! Strange one.

Things have moved on, but helped to bring the internet information age a step closer.
