Definition
The ‘Tic is nowadays a seldom used colloquial shorthand for Celtic, mainly used by a minority of fans but is more likely seen only in print media. Never really ever used by the official club sources either
Rarely used by the general support, often it’s just some a few individuals who for whatever reason have some habit of using it.
In general, people prefer the other usual terms, e.g. The Hoops, The Celts, The Bhoys etc. So probably it’s a case that The ‘Tic just got crowded out by the other terms that supporters & others could employ. The ‘Tic doesn’t really lend itself well to a plural form either, and would sound as if referring to the nasty beasties that are ‘ticks’ (not something any club would want to be related to).
The term was more commonly used many years back (although still by a minority) but seems to have died a death from the mid-late 1990s onwards. Some older supporters can remember some older folk who used to use the term a bit more commonly but was never the norm.
You’ll more likely find it used in media circles, newspaper headlines (e.g. “Tic get it right“) and PR stuff than you would on the Celtic terraces, but still a nice little nickname.
