Daniel Thomas made his only Celtic appearance in a remarkable clash against Third Lanark.

Signed by Celtic as a trialist from Mossend Hibs he turned out as left-half for the league match at Parkhead on February 23rd 1895. Celtic, who had been struggling for form and were without a win since January 2nd, trailed Thirds 4-1 but then staged a fantastic comeback to draw 4-4.

That game was to be Thomas’ only taste of competitive action for the Celts before he joined Hibernian in May 1895, but doesn’t appear to have played for their first team.

He may never have played another major game for Celtic, but what a match to look back upon.

He soon moved on that same year to Motherwell, and then onto Carfin Rovers (1897) and Albion Rovers (1898). Appears to have returned to Carfin Rovers in 1899.

Interesting record that he had gone on to play for some of the most notable Scottish-Irish linked clubs in the country (Celtic, Hibs, Carfin Rovers, Mossend Hibs and Albion Rovers).

Also it appears that he was a regular at Motherwell in his time there, playing around 30 games. Records indicate he joined Motherwell on 7 Aug 1895, which was lucky for him, as only a few days beforehand on 3 Aug 1895, Motherwell at their home ground lost to Celtic 8-0 in a friendly match, so he got to avoid that nightmare. Motherwell at this time were not in the top tier.

From records, we don’t believe he ever faced the Celtic first team after his departure from the club. However in November 1895, he played against a Celtic ‘A’ side (reserves) and he sadly ended up with a broken leg from this encounter in a 5-0 win for the Celtic ‘A’ side.

Scottish Referee-Friday 15 November 1895

Sympathy is expressed for Dan Thomas, the Motherwell’s clever left half, who was unfortunate enough to get his leg broken when playing against Celtic last Saturday. This is Thomas’ first season as a senior, and during the short time he has played for Motherwell he has won for himself a splendid reputation
