A centre half, Billy Thomson played just a solitary league match for Celtic as a trialist.

The Wishaw Hibs man appeared for the Bhoys in a 4-0 victory over Leith Athletic at Celtic Park on 16th March 1895, but that was the end of the road for him at Celtic.

In his debut, the outside-right of Leith Athletic (Marshall) was tackled by Celtic’s Dan Doyle early in the first half and broke his leg, and the snap was so distinctly heard it made the supporters in the north stand flinch. The player had to wait until half-time for an ambulance but a substitute, Celtic’s David Hamilton, took his place.

Celtic lost the league title to Hearts that season, but regained it the next season, but Billy Thomson was already gone by then.

Billy Thomson seems to have played for Celtic once more in a friendly at Renton on 23 May 1895 in a downpour that was so bad the game was reduced to 35mins each half. It could be said that defined his time at Celtic sadly.

He is believed to have returned to Wishaw Hibs.
