Review

Motherwell came back from 2 goals down to record a dramatic victory in a jam packed Fir Park.

Celtic were strong favourites after their 3-1 win on the same ground 14 days earlier. They were 2-0 up in 39 minutes but a second half defensive collapse cost them dear.

Dalglish opened the scoring with a magnificent rocket shot free kick from 25 yeards in 31 minutes and Andy Lynch scored the second 8 minutes later.

After half time Motherwell manager Willie McLean threw caution to the wind and by 61 minutes Bobby Graham and Ian Taylor had them level.

The winner came in 70 minutes when Willie Pettigrew chased a long ball through the middle and outpaced a static Celtic defence to fire a shot into the net off a post. The goal was a disaster for the Celtic defensive pairing of McDonald and McCluskey.

Celtic fought for an equaliser but the goal would not come. This was the first time Celtic had been knocked out in the 3rd round since 1968 and was a severe blow to caretaker manager Sean Fallon.
