Match report from The Scotsman, 12th February 1923

CELTIC HARD PRESSED
On a heavy ground a wonderfully fast game was seen at Celtic Park, Glasgow, where the Celtic had to fight hard to get the better of East Fife. There was never much between the sides in the first half, and many of those present must have been surprised at the play of the Second Leaguers. Both goals were assailed in turn, but Bernard had more to do than Shaw, and after twenty-three minutes Cassidy put his side ahead with a fine drive. East Fife forced the play after that, and a centre from McDonald was headed into Shaw by Weir. The goalkeeper let the ball drop, and before he could clear Riley dashed in and made the scores level. A great struggle was seen in the second half, with the Celtic forwards trying to get the lead, but unable to overcome a resolute defence. Ultimately Cassidy got an opening, but his effort got the crossbar. The centre followed up, and at the second attempt beat Bernard. The visitors played strongly to the end, and just on the call of time Barrett and McDonald missed a great chance to equalise after clever play by Murray. The gate drawings, exclusive of tax, amounted to £340, representing an attendance of about 12,000.

The Glasgow Herald – Mon 12 Feb 1923

Celtic were strengthened by the return, after absence through injury, of Gallagher, and it was well for the Parkhead team that their most enterprising forward was available, as the provincial club disputed the issue until the last moments.

Celtic forced the play, and Bernard was called on to clear twice from McLean. East Fife then attacked, but they could make no impression on the home defence. A corner against Celtic came to nothing, and Celtic returned to open the score with a drive from Cassidy after Bernard had cleared from McAtee. Riley equalised for the visitors, and the scores were level at the interval. Celtic resumed strongly, but Bernard kept them from scoring until near the end, when Cassidy scored again. East Fife pressed in the closing stages, but failed to draw level.
