Trivia

  • Christmas Day fixture
  • A stroll in the park might describe Celtic’s display against Queen’s Park at Parkhead. Three goals to nothing up at half-time thanks to Delaney, (2), and Johnny Crum there was a brief revival for the visitors when their centre-forward, John McDonald Dodds, netted in 70 minutes but Jimmy McGrory restored Celtic’s lead four minutes later.
  • J. M. Dodds would go on to represent Great Britain at the 1936 Olympics.
  • With Rangers at the top and Celtic second, a point behind, the Scottish League First Division to-day has an appearance that was familiar a few seasons ago. Rangers defeated Falkirk at Ibrox yesterday by one goal to nil to gain a clear lead of the table. Celtic were not pressed to defeat Queen’s Park by four goals to one at Celtic Park, and gaining the two points lifted them over Heart of Midlothian and Hamilton Academicals to second place, with a total of 32 points to Rangers’ 33, but with two more matches played.
  • In England Arsenal displaced Sunderland at the top of the First Division by beating Preston at Highbury, while the Roker men lost to Everton at Liverpool.
  • Big holiday crowds enjoyed the pantomime season in Glasgow, with “Goody Two Shoes”, at the Royal, the circus at the Kelvin Hall and “Mr. Whittington” a musical comedy starring Jack Buchanan at The King’s.
  • The Abyssinian Government has sent another Note to the League of Nations protesting against further movements of Italian troops alleged to be taking place in Abyssinian territory. The Italian’s have also sent a Note, which concludes by expressing readiness to resume the joint delimitation of the frontier, but only after the Abyssinian Government has made reparation for its “flagrant aggression at Ual Ual”.

CELTIC TOO GOOD FOR QUEENS PARK

PROMISE OF REARRANGED FORWARD LINE

Celtic were not pressed to defeat Queens Park by four goals to one at Celtic Park yesterday.

With a rearranged forward line, which included Crum at inside-right, Delaney at outside-right, and McGrory at centre, Celtic gave an outstanding display, particularly in the first half, when they gained a three-goal lead.

With a stronger pair of backs, the Amateurs might have made a closer fight of it. Kyle, Martin, and Dodds were best in Queen’s Park attack and in a good intermediate line, Lyon shone. Celts were a well balanced team, Crum and Delaney forming a sprightly wing, while McGrory, if off in his shooting, had always to be watched. McGonagle was very safe, and McDonald’s smart interventions held up Dodds on many occasions.

Play was fast at the start, the ground appearing to be rather hard, and after Crawford had sent over a dangerous cross which Kennaway put out grandly, McGrory and Crum worked through and the ball was left for Delaney to tap into the net after four minutes’ play.

Following play on the home right wing, Dickson missed his kick and let Delaney through. The winger went ahead and scored with a tremendous angular shot. Three minutes from the interval O’Donnell crossed nicely, and Crum headed through.

In the second half the Celtic forward line was held more firmly by the Queen’s Park defenders, and the visitors’ forwards came more into evidence. After twenty-five minutes Queen’s had their reward, when from Crawford’s cross, Kennaway could only touch the ball with his foot, and Dodds scored.

In a Celtic raid Dickson, in attempting to clear, drove the ball hard against McGrory for the ball to rebound into the net.
