Trivia

  • Referee J. Thomson, Burnbank is the centre of controversey after sending off John Morrison in the first half for an offence that is not apparent to observers. Despite this handicap Celtic make a game of it, but Goals by Kenneth Dawson and Stewart give the Bairns victory.
  • Rangers can now be considered as champions.
  • Celtic's defeat means that even if they win all of their remaining six games they can only reach 53 points, Rangers' present total.
  • Herr Hitler received a rapturous welcome on his return to Berlin after touring Germany's newly acquired territories in Czecho-Slovakia.

Celtic v Falkirk 1939

Seldom have a club paid more dearly for its mistakes than did Celtic against Falkirk. Who could have imagined, for instance, the tense moment when Morrison was ordered off close on half time.

The back stopped Carruthers unfairly in midfield and the referee promptly and correctly awarded Falkirk a free-kick. The official also decided to reprimand Morrison. The player by his nod of assent during the "lecture" seemed fully repentant — and then in ten seconds he was wending his way to the pavilion.

We can only presume he engaged in verbal warfare with the referee, though his demeanour when the official first beckoned to him gave no hint at what was to follow.
