RANGERS BEAT CELTIC
RANGERS, 5; CELTIC, 1
All the old-time rivalry was featured at Ibrox Park, Glasgow, last night, when, before a crowd of 21,000, Rangers and Celtic met in the semi-final of the Glasgow Charity Cup.
Five minutes from the end Venters, the Rangers inside-left, was ordered off the field for failing to go for the ball when requested by the referee after the player had kicked it out. A minute later Divers, the Celtic centre forward, was also sent off.
These incidents marred an otherwise sporting game, in which Celtic were by no means as inferior as the score would suggest. Where Rangers excelled was in the finishing power of their forwards.
Caskie (St. Mirren) scored the opening goal in fourteen minutes, and close on half-time a shot by Venters was diverted into the net by Lyon, the Celtic centre-back.
Against the wind in the second half, Celtic played remarkably well, but after twelve minutes Thornton scored a third goal, and five minutes later he again beat Smith.
In some fast, well-combined advances the Celtic defence was overplayed, and Caskie registered a fifth goal.
Celtic were always trying, and ten minutes from the finish, Paterson converted a penalty kick.
