Review

Both teams started well and had shots at each end. Wishart caused Stein some inital problems. In fact as the first half wore on Alloa were making a great game of it and causing plenty of problems for the Celtic defense with the Celtic forward line being pretty ineffectual against a tight Alloa defense.

On 25 minutes Alloa went into the lead when Lynch picked up a corner and shot into the net. Celtic increased their urgency and started to get back into the game.

On 31 minutes Celtic were awarded a penalty but Haughney’s kick missed wide. Just before the interval Celtic were awarded another penalty when Mochan was brought down in the area. This time Haughney made no mistake.

In the second half Walsh scored a second goal to put Celtic in front. The lead lasted all of four minutes before Lynch headed a clearance from a corner back in and with Bonnar set to collect Kiernan snuck in to turn the ball home.

Jock Stein was injured and had to be stretchered off. He came back on with twenty minutes to play. Peacock scored a dramatic goal from 15 yards and Walsh picked up another goal just before the end.

The final score line probably was not a fair reflection on the performance of Alloa, who had given everything and particularly in the first half were the equals of their League A opponents.
