Trivia

  • Billy McNeil and Frank Haffey recovered enough from ‘flu to start training again on the Monday and Tuesday respectively. However Frank Brogan was injured in training and looked as though he would be out. Also Paddy Turner failed to recover from a knee knock he picked up against Dunfermiline. In for them came John Divers and Hughes.
  • At this time Basle were a team of part-timers. They were missing four first team players, two on military service – Blumer and Baumann – and two – Weber and Hofer – who could not get absence from their jobs. They arrived at Renfrew airport on Tuesday 8th by charter flight. The Basle players were on an £8 per player win bonus with nothing if they lost.
  • Rangers lost 6-0 to Real Madrid in the Bernabeau. Hearts drew 2-2 with Lausanne and a third game will be required to decide the outcome.
  • Celtic went into the draw in Tarragona, Spain and were drawn against Dinamo Zagreb of Yugoslavia in the next round.
  • Ernst Kaltenbach who scored for Basle in a 5-1 defeat for Basel back on 27 May 1911, more than 50 years later when he heard that McMenemy was still alive, travelled to Glasgow with Basle for the European Cup Winners Cup game on October 9 1963 to meet Napoleon again. They were both at that game!

Review

Only 8,000 fans turned out in the driving rain on a night when Glasgow was hammered by gales and storms. This is Celtic’s lowest European home gate and the directors lamented the fact that European football was costing the club money.
Goalkeeper Stettler was again Basle’s outstanding player with a fine performance in miserable conditions.
Divers scored the game’s outstanding goal when he beat two men and fired home from 25 yards.
