Trivia

  • Scotland were beaten 3-2 by Ireland in Windsor Park on the Saturday 2nd October. Celtic had an 'off' weekend through the international, other than Billy McNeill and John Hughes who played for Scotland. However most other First Division sides played a game. The predominent make-iup of the Scotland team was of Anglo-Scots – those playing for south-of-the-border teams. The off-weekend allowed Sean Fallon and Neil Mochan to go and check out Hibs who were playing Clyde in the league.
  • Celtic Reserves were in action on the Saturday against Motherwell drawing 3-3. The team was Fallon, Cattanach, Kennedy, Henderson, McCarron, Brogan, Connelly, H Quinn, J Quinn, Owen Sweeney, Tony Taylor.
  • Having demolished Raith Rovers 12-1 on aggregate in the quarter finals, Celtic faced an altogether different prospect in the semi against Hibs. Hibernian were riding high at the top of the table with an excellent start to the season under manager Bob Shankly. In Neil Martin they had the league's top scorer and like Celtic, their success was built on a solid half back line.
  • McBride was again fit and replaced Chalmers at centre forward; Auld was still suffering from the thigh strain that had nagged at him for virtually the whole season. Hibs were unchanged with future Celt Pat Stanton at right half and former Celt John McNamee at centre half .
  • The game was played at Ibrox Park.
  • Hibs protested against the replay being played at Ibrox. They want game at Hampden

In news outside football BP announced that they had made a strike of gas offshore in the southern sector of the North Sea. From this humble gas strike came the developments which led to the bonanza of North Sea oil in the late 70s and onwards and the foundation of Scotland's prosperity.

Review

This was a stamina sapping 120 minutes in heavy conditions. Joe McBride got the opener with a header in the 9th minute. This was countered with an excellent goal finished by Neil Martin. In the second half another well worked goal by Hibs put them in front. Celtic continued to battle the Hibs defense which played cooly. Johnstone and Hughes were constant threats on either wing. With time fast running out Lennox got the equaliser just before time. Gemmell brought the ball forward and his shot reboulded off the cheat of Wilson and there was Bobby to tap in.
In the 30 minutes of extra time neither team could find the opening.
This was a fine game and the draw was a fair reflection, acknowledged by all who were at the game.
