Trivia

  • The Celtic party left Glasgow the day before the game with a party of 16 players. Danny McGrain remained in Scotland to recuperate from the ankle injury that had been troubling him since the start of the season.
  • Probably set up in the summer when Stein was in West Germany to commentate on Scotland's performance in the World Cup. Stein wanted a game against an experienced European side to bring the team up to standard ready for the season and an approaching European Cup campaign.
  • Match played in the magnificent Gelsenkirchen stadium which was specifically rebuilt for that summer's World Cup.
  • Connaghan had a poor game and Dalglish a stinker, still recovering from the excesses of the World Cup.
  • Match turned on Jinky's high and wide penalty miss on 65 minutes, he was fielded in the unusual position of centre forward.
  • The great German striker Klaus Fischer scores twice for Schalke.
  • This is the joint heaviest defeat for any Celtic team under Jock Stein.
  • Back in Scotland disputes still simmered between the Scottish Football Players Union and the SFA/SFL with the Scottish TUC called in to mediate. The Players Union was led by ex-Celtic Benny Rooney now playing for Partick Thistle who were under the new management of Bertie Auld.

Review

Scheer's long range shot deceived Connaghan. Fischer's first goal hit an unnamed defender to deflect past Connaghan. After Jinky missed the penalty Schalke scored another two goals.
Dalglish was marked out of the game by Russman. Jim Brogan and Sobirey clashed and the German injured and subbed immediately with Brogan subbed not long after, Jock Stein fearing he was red card material.
