Review

It had been coming with the performances seen in the Drybrough and particularly the response in Germany but losing to Ayr Utd came as something of a shock.
Jock Stein has three problems; his defence looks vulnerable on the break, his strikers are missing chances and he cannot find a reliable keeper. The principle reason for the loss was the failure of the strikers to take advantage of a whole host of chances particularly in the first half hour of play when Celtic were dominant. Throughout the game Ayr counter-attacked with speed.
Ayr scored first from a corner, with McGrain encompassed with a knee knock he had just sustained. He was subbed at half time by Dalglish.
After that opener, Celtic got going up front with Johnstone, Hood, Wilson and Lennox stretching Ayr. But the shooting was appalling – wide or mistimed – and it took till close on the half hour for the equaliser to come when a move on the left from Johnstone and Lennox saw Murray finish it.
Ayr came back and when Dickson was brought down in the area by Callaghan, Mitchell stepped up and put the penalty away.
Connelly equalised in the second half with a 20 yarder.
Two minutes later Ayr were ahead for the third time when Ingram headed past Hunter.
To the end it was tight with Celtic piling on the pressure, Ayr defending well and breaking fast.
