Trivia

  • Celtic were on a hatrick having lost their two last games to Rangers and Motherwell. Ayr had their tails up and predicted another upset for Celtic.
  • Billy McNeill had been out with a heavy cold for much of the week but returned to train and was in the team. Ronnie Glavin found himself out in the cold on the bench along with MacDonald with Jim Brogan reinstated at left back. Pat McCluskey was also dropped. Connelly's ankle cut had healed and he came back in. And Tommy Callaghan was restored too.
  • A combination of fog, frost and week-long rain curtailed some of the weekend's games but there was no problem at Somerset Park and the game went ahead.
  • Ayr play in an unusual blue and red Barcelona style strip.
  • Brogan and Connelly clear cans and bottles thrown on by Celtic fans when Ayr opened the scoring.

Review

The kick off was delayed for 5 minutes to allow the scrum of fans to get into the ground.
Celtic were 0-1 down and struggling before Murray equalised on the stroke of half time from a McGrain cross.

In the second half Celtic ran out easy winners with Deans' first goal being the pick, a glorious shot on the turn from 25 yards.

Connelly's return brought assurance the defence and Dalglish was an inspiration in midfield.

This was the last League game of the month. The table now looked like this after two back-to-back losses in January.
