Trivia

  • Billy McNeill and Roddy MacDonald both appear wearing the number 5 shorts.
  • Although he wears the number 6 shorts Andy Lynch plays at left back for the first time in his Celtic career. Connelly, Hood and Deans drop out with McNeill, Lynch and Steve Murray back in , Murray returning after his recent hospitalisation.
  • Ex-Celtic trialist and Norwegian Geir Karlsen was in goal for Dunfermline.
  • During the week Celtic chairman Desmond White had slammed the small Scottish clubs who were holding the bigger clubs to ransom on the executive share of power within the game likening it to the tail wagging the dog. This didn't go down too well with either the small clubs or the appartchiks of Scottish football.
  • In the Reserve League on the same day Celtic defeated Dunfermline 6-2 at Celtic Park. The Celtic team was Hunter, Hannah, Brogan, McNamara, Newman, Welsh, Ritchie, Casey, Deans, Burns, McCluskey. Subs McLaughlin and Mulholland. The Celtic scorers were George McCluskey 4 and Dixie Deans 2. After the game Sean Fallon said of George McCluskey, 'George reminds me of Billy McPhail in style and action.'
  • Airdrie qualified for the Scottish Cup Final to face Celtic, somewhat controversially against Motherwell with a 1-0 win. The goal came from a free kick awarded for the goalkeeper taking more than four steps with the ball in hand.
  • It later emerged that Connelly had walked out again.

Review

Bobby Lennox gives what is described as 'the best performance of old fashioned wing play seen all season'.
Lennox stretched the Pars on the left and the magnificent Danny McGrain tore them apart on the right flank.

A strong midfield of Glaving, Dalglish and Murray.

The first goal came from Paul Wilson who hammered home a ball touched to him by Glavin. Then followed a disputed Dunfermiline goal to equalise at the start of the second half before Celtic wrapped up the points with two goals in two minutes from Wilson and Lennox.
