Review

Celtic attacked from the start and in 2 minutes Croy missed a Dalglish cross but Lynch blazed his shot over the bar.

Celtic had constant possession as the German side retreated into a defensive shell. In 22 minutes Celtic were awarded a penalty when Dalglish was fouled in the box but Croy made a magnificent one handed save from Lennox’s penalty high to his right.

Celtic broke through in 40 minutes when McGrain created an opportunity for Dalglish to score with a low shot.

After the break Celtic continued to press and Dalglish slid a shot wide from a fine Hood-Lennox move. Then the fans despaired when Dalglish skied a shot over from only three yards out.

Celtic began to get frustrated and with only two minutes left Blank slipped past Aitken, the 17 years old Celtic centre back, and raced through to score past Latchford.

At full time the Sachsenring players did cartwheels of Joy on the Parkhead turf. Celtic players had given their all with Dalglish an outstanding talent on the night and the result was a total injustice.
