Trivia

  • On Tuesday 29th November Celtic started proceedings against the architects and civil engineers that had rebuilt the new South Stand. They were suing both firms for £250,000. The club alleged serious defects in workmanship during the alterations carried out in the closed season 1971 which caused undue stress and distortion to the new structure through time. The club maintained that the design failed to adhere to good engineering practise. The problem appeared to be down to the grade of steel used which was incapable of withstanding wind pressure and snow loading. Judgement in the case after 2 1/2 days proceedings was reserved.
  • Celtic had been due to face Hearts in the League Cup semi final at Hampden on the Wednesday (30th) night, but snow and frozen ground forced postponement of the game. There was a further postponement of the Saturday game when Celtic were due to face Hibs at Easter Rd.

With their previous two games having been postponed due to snow, Jock Stein accepted Benny Rooney’s offer of a challenge match at Cappielow. Roy Kay made a rare appearance and scored an even rarer goal.

Somewhat predictably ex-Celt Andy Ritchie scored Morton’s goal. Also playing for Morton was ex-Celt Denis Connaghan and future Celt Mark McGhee.

Morton’s George Anderson was sent off for an off-the-ball incident seen by the linesman.
