Trivia

  • Celtic top of the league on 12pts ahead of Rangers who have same pts but three less on goal difference.
  • The win made it four league wins in a row and four clean sheets too. It’s only the second time in the club’s history that they’ve began a league campaign with four victories without conceding a goal. The last time was in season 1906/07 when the Hoops, in the middle of their famous six championships in a row run, recorded five consecutive wins without the loss of a solitary goal.

Review

Comprehensive victory for Celtic with 3 great goals. Top of the league and a bright start to the season (exc European misadventures). Hearts whinged about the first two goals, but they were fine and were clearly outclassed on the day.

Celtic 3-0 Hearts (BBC)

By Clive Lindsay
Hearts were left fuming by the first two goals as Celtic ended Saturday still ahead of Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premier League.
Suso had sent a drive against a Celtic post, but Hearts were caught out as Daryl Murphy broke clear and his cross was turned in by James Forrest.
The visitors thought Shaun Maloney was also offside before he rounded goalkeeper Marian Kello to score.
Paddy McCourt settled it with a mazy run and finish late in the second half.

Neil Lennon's 12th consecutive league win as Celtic manager – the fourth of this season – kept his side ahead of Rangers on goal difference after the champions' win over Hamilton Accies earlier in the day.
And, despite the controversy, it was a deserved win that ended Hearts' unbeaten league record this season.
Anthony Stokes had made his Celtic debut after arriving from Hibernian, replacing Georgios Samaras beside Murphy up front.
And the Irishman was first to threaten a goal, finishing off a flowing move by driving just wide of the post.
Celtic, perhaps buoyed by the enthusiastic minute's applause to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the death of legendary Celtic manager Jock Stein, had made an energetic start.
Kevin Kyle should have scored with an 18th-minute header for Hearts when he was left unmarked at a corner, but goalkeeper Fraser Forster saved well at the back post.
Forster then had to tip a Ryan Stevenson cross-***-shot over the crossbar as the visitors took heart.
Suso sent a 20-yard drive off the outside of the upright, but Celtic immediately broke upfield and took the lead as they breached a defence in which midfielder Ruben Palazuelos was deputising at left-back for the injured Lee Wallace.
Daryl Murphy picked the ball up wide on the right and, with Hearts claiming for offside, Darren Barr's attempt to clear the Irishman's ball across the face of goal struck Forrest and crossed the line.
The strength of Jim Jefferies' protests led to the Hearts manager being sent to the stand.
Without his growled instructions from the touchline, the Edinburgh side appeared to lose their way as they played a kamikaze offside trap.
Forrest had already broken clear only to miss the waiting Maloney with his cross when the latter was found by a Stokes through ball before skipping past Kello.
Hearts again thought the flag should have gone up against the Scotland forward and their disappointment would have heightened had Kello not blocked a 15-yard Stokes drive with his legs.
The visitors had not learned their lesson as Celtic created the first chance of the second half, Murphy breaking clear only for Kello to save at the striker's feet.
Maloney ought to have put the game beyond Hearts but dallied on the ball five yards out before being swamped by the visitors' defence.
Hearts had claims for a penalty rejected when David Templeton was challenged on the edge of the box by Emilio Izaguirre and Suso immediately forced Forster to push clear following the winger's powerful 16-yard drive.
From his position in the stand, Jefferies sent four men forward, but his side were caught out at the back again and Samaras was ruled offside after breaking clear before rolling the ball into the net and the Greece forward was then denied by a good Kello save.
McCourt finished the game with a flourish, the substitute picking the ball up wide on the left and beating three players before dinking it over Kello.

Paddy McCourt seals Celtic win but Hearts fume over "offside" goals

Scottish Premier Celtic 3 Hearts 0

  • Forrest 28,
  • Maloney 44,
  • McCourt 90
  • guardian.co.uk, Saturday 11 September 2010 20.44 BST

Neil Lennon's Celtic revolution already has one distinct advantage over that attempted by Tony Mowbray a year ago. Namely, that it is not being carried out to the detriment of domestic results.
Celtic made it four Scottish Premier League wins out of four over a Hearts side who had arrived undefeated. They left harbouring a strong sense of injustice after controversial goals from James Forrest and Shaun Maloney settled the game before the break.
There was time in the closing stages for the kind of goal that apparently only Paddy McCourt can score. The Irish winger, a maverick, danced through the Hearts defence and clipped the ball home in typically casual style. If McCourt had fitness and consistency to match his undoubted talent, he would be some player.
Lennon watched his latest in a long line of debutants, Anthony Stokes, enjoy a leisurely rather than influential afternoon in the Celtic attack. The manager even had the luxury of withdrawing his captain, Scott Brown, for the final half-hour – the midfielder is unable to train due to an ankle problem and needs as many leisurely afternoons as he can get.
The early-season form of Maloney, conversely, continues to impress. Given his troubles with injury and form since returning to Parkhead from Aston Villa in 2008, Maloney has become the new signing Celtic did not parade this summer.
Hearts were angered by what they regarded as two first-half refereeing mistakes, on first viewing legitimately. The visitors had been perfectly comfortable, even hitting a Celtic post through Suso Santana, before the incident which always looked like defining the game.
Assistant referee Francis Andrews was the man who received the full wrath of the Hearts bench after failing to flag Daryl Murphy offside when collecting a Maloney pass. Murphy picked out Forrest at the back post, with the youngster tapping in his second goal of the campaign. Willie Collum, the referee, could have made a beeline for any member of the Hearts coaching staff as Celtic celebrated. It was the manager, Jim Jefferies, though, who was sent to watch the remainder of the match from the stand.
Jefferies, then, had a perfect view of the next contentious incident, which again led to a Celtic goal. This time Maloney appeared suspiciously close to being in an offside position when played in by Stokes. The diminutive front man understandably thought little of such a possibility, rounding Marian Kello and essentially putting the game out of Hearts' reach.
While Jefferies will point to officialdom as the source of Celtic's definitive advantage, his plans have been seriously undermined by the loss of two key defenders. Lee Wallace, his left-back and best player, will miss around three months after sustaining a knee injury while representing Scotland against Liechtenstein. Marius Zaliukas, the Hearts captain, although currently injured, is highly unlikely to play for the club again due to a contract dispute.
They could not be accused of wilting after the break, but they never displayed the creative touch that suggested a comeback would be forthcoming. Maloney missed from close-range and Kello saved smartly from Georgios Samaras as Celtic looked to replicate their previous home outing, in which they knocked four goals past St Mirren.
They had to settle for three, but will take solace from watching McCourt's sublime effort. Cue the first chants of "We're gonna win the league" from the Parkhead stands. In early September? Surely some kind of record.
