Trivia

  • UEFA Cup 2018-19, Europa League group stage; Matchday 6

  • Celtic through to the Europa League KO stages for second season in a row.

  • Celtic finished, despite being totally overrun and defeated in this game at home.
  • Other match: Leipzig 1-1 Rosenborg.
  • Prior to this game: Celtic sat second on 9pts. Salzburg top on 15pts and thru. Leipzig on 6pts; Celtic needed 1pt or Leipzig not to win to go thru
  • Rosenborg bottom on 1pt and really have embarrassed themselves. Their glory days are over, yet are Celtic's saviours with an incredible late late goal.
  • Celtic were in crazy situation. Three in front of Leipzig but Celtic to play Salzburg at home who have won 5/5 whilst Leipzig to play Rosenborg at home who were 0/5. If both ended on 9pts Celtic out. Celtic had to at least draw at least v Salzburg.
  • Comical second goal conceded after Gordon tried to get the ball out quickly for it be intercepted by Salzburg player who scored.
  • Salzburg manager seemed to be in awe of Celtic and actually left the game at the end with a Celtic scarf and hat on!!!!
  • Celtic were two down with 5mins to go and Leipzig 1up v Rosenborg in their game. Then Rosenborg unexpectedly scored and Celtic through.
  • Bad news: Lustig taken off following head knock, Christie possibly out with serious leg or ankle break (TBC).
  • Celtic for third time in four games missed a penalty (although Ntcham scored on rebound).
  • Alleged that a Celtic fan might have thrown something at a Salzburg player, if true then it's unacceptable and whoever they are, they should be banned from Celtic Park going forward.
  • Leigh Griffiths: Celtic announce he will be out for a period for personal problems, believed to be due to gambling issues. We wish him the best and hope to see him back in the first team when he is ready.
  • Celtic had a 9th minute standing round of applause in support of Leigh Griffiths who releases a very thankful message to all.
  • Sevco KO'ed out of Europe losing 1-0 away to Rapid Vienna. The first time in generations that Celtic fans have been thankful to Rapid Vienna. Sevco also sneakily paid off two high profile loan players on same day to hide the fact.
  • When Celtic beat Celta Vigo on away goals in 2002 it ensured they were going to be in Europe after Christmas for the first time in 20 years, they've now managed that feat 8 times in the last 16 years, so consistent. 2002-03 2003-04 2006-07 2007-08 2012-13 2014-15 2017-18 2018-19

Review2018-12-13: Celtic 1-2 Salzburg, European Cup

Tom English (journo) on twitter: "On the night, better to be lucky than good. Surreal stuff."

Assistant coach Rene Maric took to Twitter after the game to post a video of the Celtic Park lights show and a message to the fans. He said: “Thank you, @CelticFC, for hosting this game tonight. What an amazing atmosphere, historical stadium & great club. Bowing to the fans, priviliged for the experience.”

(CelticJoe of KDS)
What a crazy night.

Started with me seeing the Rapid goal from the team bus parked outside the Celtic end.
First half, we looked as if our players had a nervous breakdown about passing to anyone with a Hoops strip on.
Still can't believe it was 0-0 at half-time.
Second half, Brendan changed it all, going for a diamond midfield, with Forrest pushed up front.
We were much more competitive.
Then Ryan Christie is injured, Ntcham comes on, and is exceptionally slow getting out to stop the cross that led to the first goal.
Then we had the worst goal I've ever seen a Celtic give away.
Then we had the worst miss I've ever seen in a Celtic match.
I was right behind it. I was celebrating. The ball was going in. Still can't work out how Ajer managed it.

And then came the Rosenborg goal madness and the endless minutes of yelling at anyone with a wifi signal: "Has that game finished yet?"

A bonkers night. But it has to be said – was Rogic wearing diver's boots? He was fekking murder.

Anyhow, bring on the Chelsea.

Krys1888 on Twitter:
"All that said, the fact our first shot on target was the Ntcham free kick at the end really wasn’t anywhere near good enough. Our passing and distribution was awful all night, like so many of our away games in Europe – except this time at home."

Celtic 1 – 2 Salzburg: Hosts qualify for knockout stages despite defeat

Celtic secured European football after Christmas for the second successive season under Brendan Rodgers.

It was less about what they did and more about what Rosenborg managed against RB Leipzig in Germany.

Class told in the end at Celtic Park but, happily for Rodgers, the result was rendered redundant by a result elsewhere. In surreal scenes, Celtic Park erupted towards the final stages of what felt like a fairly comprehensive defeat to the already qualified Salzburg. All’s well that ends well. Celtic held on to second place in Group B.

They were even able to look back and smile at one of the misses of this or any season from Kris Ajer, who deflected the ball over from three yards as the hosts tried desperately to mount a comeback. A dreadful error by Craig

Gordon that led to Salzburg’s second goal was also made to seem like a trivial matter.

Substitute Oliver Ntcham did get the ball in the net for Celtic after converting a late penalty at the second attempt after Filip Benkovic was upended in the box. Not that it mattered by then.

The details had threatened to mock Celtic. A goal in the 67th minute – the time when Celtic fans often use the lights of their mobile phones to mark the year of their European Cup win – seemed to set in motion the end of their European adventures for another season. Munas Dabbur’s header was followed ten minutes later by what many feared was the knockout blow from substitute Fredrik Gulbrandsen.

Already guaranteed top spot, it would have been understandable if Salzburg took the foot off the gas in the run up to Christmas. Some hope.

Celtic needed three leaders to try to get them through this ordeal on a night when misfortune in terms of injury hampered their efforts. Original captain Mikael Lustig left the field after suffering a head knock in the first half and passed the armband to Kieran Tierney. When Scott Brown was sent on after half-time to bring his experience to bear on the evening he naturally resumed the role of skipper.

“Cut this ******** from football” urged a banner with reference to the fact Red Bull own two clubs in the same group. One was already safely in the knockout stage and another, RB Leipzig, was trying to get there providing Celtic slipped up. Few could argue with the sentiment. Things nearly played out exactly as the Celtic fans feared.

Whatever the motivation, Salzburg certainly seemed to be operating at their normal level. This means they were dangerous from the off. Play was restricted almost completely to Celtic’s own half but somehow the hosts clung on.

Jerome Onguene’s header from Zlatko Junuzovic’s corner came down off the crossbar onto the line and back out again before being cleared. Gordon clawed another header, this time from Stefan Lainer, away from the resultant corner kick. He had already tipped a looping header from Junuzovic over.

All the while, Lustig cut a dazed figure at right-back. Injured early on in a clash of heads with Lainer, he lasted until the 20-minute mark before being replaced by Ajer. The young defender was making his first appearance since sustaining a fractured eye socket against Livingston in September and had to do so while filling in at right-back. It was a high-octane encounter in which to be reintroduced and perhaps it was not surprising when it was Ajer who made the mistake that should have led to Salzburg taking the lead. He gifted possession to Hannes Wolff and the midfielder ran through on goal before Celtic and Ajer were bailed out by Gordon. The keeper stretched out a leg to deflect the ball past the post.

Brown came on at half-time for Scott Sinclair as Celtic sought to plug the gaps that had appeared throughout the first half. But they soon suffered another setback when Ryan Christie, their best player since breaking back into the side in October, was stretchered off after 55 minutes after coming off worse while making a vital challenge on Takumi Minamino just outside the Celtic box. Olivier Ntcham replaced Christie, who left the arena to a standing ovation.

With Ntcham and Brown now anchoring the midfield there was at least some reassurance for Celtic supporters. After all, they were first choice not so long ago. But this brief sense of well-being was shattered after 67 minutes. Lainer’s cross into the box found danger man Dabbur and he flicked a strong header towards goal. Gordon got an arm to it in a despairing attempt to block but could only deflect the ball up into the roof of the net.

He was at fault for the second goal, scored ten minutes later, and which looked to have put the seal on a deflating night for Celtic. Gordon’s attempted throw-out was intercepted by Gulbrandsen, who was left with the straightforward task of rounding the stricken keeper and slipping the ball into the net. There was still time left for Celtic Park to let out its biggest roar of the season – for a goal scored over 1000 miles away.

Moanes Dabbur
Moanes Dabbur opens the scoring for Salzburg

Celtic scraped into the last 32 of the Europa League on a night of astonishing drama thanks to a late Rosenborg goal in Leipzig.

With Celtic two down to Salzburg – and Leipzig ahead – the below-par Scottish champions were heading out, until Tore Reginiussen's shock equaliser four minutes from time for the Norwegian side in Germany.

Goals from Moanes Dabbur and Frederik Gulbrandsen – after a horrible Craig Gordon error – had group winners Salzburg in command in Glasgow.

Olivier Ntcham pulled a goal back at the death, scoring the rebound after missing a penalty, but it was Reginiussen's late strike for the section's bottom side that would prove pivotal.

Celtic lost captain Mikael Lustig and Ryan Christie to injury as they chased the game against last year's semi-finalists.

The Parkhead side finish their group campaign on nine points, and join Salzburg in the last-32 draw at 12:00 GMT on Monday.

Reaction & as it happened

'A night of ice and fire'

It was an evening that started with fire and ferocity outside Celtic Park on a frosty Glasgow night. Pyrotechnics and fireworks illuminated the sky in the east end of the city as a group of Celtic's supporters added to what they already knew was an occasion of great importance.

However, that paled in comparison to the sparks that would fly in a spellbinding last 10 minutes at Celtic Park on what was a night of hard toil for the hosts.

For all the illumination pre-match, the home side spent the majority of the game chasing shadows as they simply failed to get to grips with a Salzburg side that relentlessly forced them to retreat deep.

Their cause was not helped as injuries took their toll. First, captain Lustig went off following a head knock, while man of the moment Christie was taken off on a stretcher with his leg in a brace as a result of blocking a shot in the second half. He left the ground on crutches and concern will remain around how long it will be before he returns.

The Austrians were dominant from the start. Fifteen minutes in came the first real warning shot as Diadie Samassekou's header came crashing back off the bar.

After half an hour Kristoffer Ajer – who came on to replace Lustig – almost cost his team with an inexplicable pass straight to Hannes Wolf. He raced in on goal, only for Gordon to pull off a stunning save.

The first half came and went without a shot on target for Brendan Rodgers' men, and the one-way traffic continued after the break despite Scott Brown's introduction for Scott Sinclair.

For all Celtic's resolve before the break, the opener was just too easy for Salzburg. Stefan Lainer had the freedom of Glasgow to swing in a deep cross, with Dabbur splitting the centre-halves and heading in from six yards. Only a terrific save from Gordon would deny him a second four minutes later.

However, there was no preparation for what was to come with 13 minutes to play as Celtic threatened to implode. With the ball in his grasp, Gordon attempted to throw it to Tierney, but only managed to crash it against the loitering Gulbrandsen. The Scotland goalkeeper attempted to recover, but it was too late.

Celtic looked dead and buried and, when Ajer somehow turned the ball over the bar from just two yards out with eight minutes left, the writing was on the wall for the Scottish champions.

But, with all hope lost, something extraordinary happened.

With Celtic Park falling silent, a trickle of excitement, cheering and eventually euphoria began to bounce around the ground as word of Reginiussen's goal reached Glasgow.

It seemed to rouse their team as Celtic began to drive forward and they got their reward when Filip Benkovic was upended in the box by Jerome Onguene. Ntcham's effort from the spot was knocked on to the post by Alexander Walke, only for the Frenchman to turn in the rebound.

In the end, it didn't matter. Moments later a raucous roar erupted once more, heralding full-time in Leipzig. Celtic's early Christmas miracle had arrived.

'A little bit of good fortune at the end' – analysis

Former Aberdeen defender Willie Miller on BBC Scotland

We assumed that Salzburg had nothing to play for because they had won the group. We assumed Rosenborg had nothing to play for because they had no chance. And how wrong can you be on both counts. Celtic had to amass the points in the first place. But it was a little bit of good fortune in the end.

It was better in the second half. Rodgers worked hard at half time, got the shape right and Celtic looked a much better force. But the first half was extremely disappointing. Celtic were all over the place. It could have been more embarrassing.
