Trivia

  • Champions League second qualifying round
  • Second playing round for Celtic
  • 7.45pm kick-off; played at Celtic Park
  • aka: Ferencvárosi TC
  • Celtic out of Champions League already; down to Europa League

Legia (+Maribor) Malmo AEK Cluj Ferencvaros We’ve only managed 2 out of the last 7 successful CL qualiying routes as the top seeded side – winning ONE home leg from 6 (Malmo)

  • One leg rounds due to truncated season due to Covid-19; away goals don’t count
  • No crowds due to Covid-19
  • Edouard out with injury just before the start; Lennon starts with no strikers. Shocks & angers all as leaves 2-3 strikers in squad out of start.
  • Poor performance, and Lennon takes huge flak for this match.
  • The Budapest side are a club of renown once more, proving competitive in Europe. It may not be in the fashion of their 1960s and 1970s heyday during which they won the Fair Cities Cup in 1965, were runners-up in the competition three years later, and beaten in the 1975 Cup Winners’ Cup final.
  • Celtic 3rd strip revealed.
  • European Cup: Bayern Munich 2-1 PSG in the delayed final; congrats.
  • Ex-Celt Pat McCluskey has sadly passed away RIP.
  • Ex-Celt Charlie Nicholas dumped from Sky Sports after 20 years.
  • Transfers:
    • David Turnbull transfer back on it is believed
    • Shane Duffy to Celtic loan is on/off… Shane Duffy himself laughs off reports he’s set to join West Ham. Him & his entourage seem to be playing games on the social media with pics & posts stringing all and winding people up across the web.
    • Former Celtic full-back Calvin Miller is interesting Plymouth Argyle; left Celtic this summer.
    • Former Celtic hero Mikel Lustig seals homecoming switch to AIK after being let go from Genk.
    • Boli Bolingoli is seemingly close to a loan deal with Championship side Bristol City
    • Celtic could spring a surprise and win the race to sign Aaron Hickey. The teenage defender has been heavily linked with Bayern Munich and Serie A side Bologna. Hickey joined Hearts from Celtic who have retained a sell-on clause for any deal. Hearts say they haven’t received any bids for their 18-year-old starlet. Hickey is expected to leave this summer with less than a year left on his contract.

Summary

“I have no idea on that one.

“But there are some players who may want to leave and have made inroads into that over the last six months or so.

“If they don’t want to be here, we have to do something about it.

“If they are making waves to leave the club they are obviously not committed. I’m putting it out there because it has been bugging me for a long time.”

“I’m angry, frustrated, disappointed,” said Lennon. “All those and more. I have to take the responsibility for this result. It’s the first time we’ve gone out so early for 15 years, so that’s on me.

“But there’s no excuse for this result. We have to apologise to the supporters and make the best of what’s left to us this season.”

Neil Lennon

“He trusts me in the big games”
Elhamed  on Lennon

“And I am happy that I show him again and again that I deserve his trust and I am looking forward to playing good again, to keep myself fit and have a good season and stay free of injury.

“I came to Celtic and start my career here very good and I was happy for three months, then I had bad luck and get a big injury against Lazio and then I didn’t start an official game until the last game (before lockdown), so it was very strange for me because I’d never had such a large time out without being able to play football.

“But I focused on training to get myself fit and waiting for my chance to play again and show my qualities on the pitch and hopefully I can play more in the future.

Never heard NL’s after match comments, but he should be ashamed of himself for blaming players for that last night.

How the hell can we start a game without a recognised striker when we have PK, LG and AA at least fit for a half of football?

Why did he spend £3m on a LB who cannot take a man on and fail 90% of the time to get a decent ball into the box, and another £3m on another LB who is less than useless and should’ve been sacked less than a month ago?

Why, when chasing a winner, did we leave a guy at the back with no pace against a fast attacker?

Why didn’t we make any substitutions until our opponents went ahead in the tie, when it was clear to anyone who was watching that it should’ve been changed after 60 minutes. Also why did he spend £3.5m on a striker he clearly doesn’t trust to at least put in the pitch at any time last night?

Why does he persist in playing SB and ON in the same team when it’s clear to everyone that the team never plays to their potential when he does?

Why the hell does it take so long for us to get our transfer targets in, the same thing year after year after year?

We seem to be specialists in spending money on players that we never give a chance instead of spending that wee bit extra to get better quality in, we must’ve wasted an insane amount of money on guys that have been deemed not good enough.

NL knows the significance of this season, we’ve had one decent performance in the league in 3 outings. He played 2 up front the majority of the time after January last season and we ran away with the league, so why go back to the same old 1 up front turgid crap sideways/backwards style of play?

If NL is trying to blame players for last night he’s kidding no one but himself, we need to get back to winning games convincingly and we need it to start on Sunday.

Wrong team selection, soon as I saw the team and lack of strikers I feared the worst.

So many players off their game or worse, uninterested

Said it the weekend and tonight was no different

Ferencvaros were bang average but organized, and again we struggled badly in front of goal.

The management team are dredging new depths in Europe in the premier competition

Second qualifier ffs

If there are players who don’t want to be there then it’s time to get them out the door.

Sadly, the first to be sold is likely to be Eddy.

People saying were a Europa level team are just papering over the cracks, the players are paid far too much money to be playing at Europa level. In any case, I think we’ll be lucky to progress two rounds in that.

I hate to say it, but that should be a result that gets the management team the sack, if we persist with them when theres clearly a malaise in the dressing room, then there will be defeats at domestic level on a regular basis as well.

(Danny B on twitter)

Lennon has lost all the recent big games – Cluj, Rangers, Copenhagen and Ferencvaros – he was out-thought by better coaches, makes blatant mistakes before the game starts. He fails to prepare.

Celtic crash out of Champions League against Ferencvaros and miss out on £30m

2-1 defeat means Neil Lennon’s side drop into Europa League qualifying

Celtic’s hopes of a return to the top table of European football were shattered by a resurgent Ferencvaros side on a painful and costly night for the Scottish champions who lost 2-1 at Parkhead.

For the third season in a row, Celtic will be absent from the group stage of the Champions League and miss out on the £30 million bounty which accompanies it.

Celtic: Get the latest team news, match previews and reports

Without leading striker Odsonne Edouard, sidelined by a thigh injury, Neil Lennon’s men lacked the cutting edge needed against the Hungarian champions whose reputation as one of the most famous old names of European football continues to be restored by coach Serhiy Rebrov.

Ferencvaros celebrate at Celtic Park.

Ferencvaros celebrate at Celtic Park.

It is Celtic’s earliest exit from the Champions League since they last lost in the second qualifying round to Artmedia Bratislava 15 years ago. Unlike on that occasion, this time they at least have the consolation of parachuting into the Europa League. But that will feel like scant consolation to Lennon and his players right now, nor to their supporters whose absence from Celtic Park last night will not diminish their sense of dismay and disgruntlement.

It was a night when it quickly became easy to appreciate just why Ferencvaros enjoyed an unbeaten record away from home last season when they reached the group stage of the Europa League.

Although Celtic were first to threaten, when goalkeeper Denes Dibusz was forced to punch away a stinging shot from James Forrest after good work from Mohamed Elyounoussi, the counter-attacking menace of the visitors – highlighted before the game by Lennon – evidenced itself in devastating fashion in the seventh minute.

Celtic looked as if they had contained the danger when Scott Brown managed to get back to cut out a cross from Brazilian midfielder Somalia after Ferencvaros had broken down the pitch at lightning pace through the dangerous Tokmac Nguen.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon shows his frustration.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon shows his frustration.

But from the corner which Brown was forced to concede, Celtic’s defending was less than convincing as Isael’s delivery from the left was cleared to just outside the penalty area. The hosts were too slow to react to the loose ball which Somalia nodded into the path of David Siger who had all the time he needed to shape himself for a magnificent right foot shot which beat the helpless Vasilis Barkas low to the goalkeeper’s right.

Celtic now knew exactly what to expect whenever they lost possession but initially didn’t find it any easier to deal with. Just five minutes later, Ferencvaros launched another rapid raid but, fortunately for Celtic, this time Somalia and Nguen were unable to make the most of a promising situation.

Celtic were stretched again at the back when Isael burst clear on the left, Kristoffer Ajer coming to the rescue on this occasion as he got across to cut out the cross.

Unsurprisingly, the absence of a recognised centre forward impacted on Celtic’s efforts to respond. The lack of a focal point up front often led to them taking one touch too many in the attacking third of the pitch against a tactically disciplined Ferencvaros back four.

It was a thankless task at times for Ryan Christie in leading the line, a role he eventually rotated with both Olivier Ntcham and Elyounoussi as Celtic attempted to compensate for Edouard’s absence.

Christie did come close with a shot deflected just wide of Dibusz’s right hand post and, as Celtic responded to Lennon’s touchline exhortations to ‘move the ball quicker’, Elyounoussi was unfortunate to see a shot deflect just over after he brilliantly controlled a cross from James Forrest on the corner of the six yard box.

As Celtic gradually built some momentum, the lack of a natural poacher’s instincts perhaps played a part in Christie’s failure to get enough of a touch on Greg Taylor’s inviting cutback across the face of the six yard box.

Celtic finished the first half firmly on the front foot and Elyounoussi, looking as likely as anyone to find a way through the visitors’ defensive set-up, was unlucky to see a shot slide narrowly wide of Dibusz’s right hand post after cutting in from the left.

Having brought greater intensity and fluency to their play, Celtic carried it with them into the opening exchanges of the second half and if there was a touch of fortune about Christie’s 53rd minute equaliser, it was no less than they deserved.

Some patient and precise build-up play from Forrest and Elyounoussi culminated in the Norwegian feeding the ball into the path of Christie on the edge of the box. His left foot shot deflected off the head of Ferencvaros defender Adnan Kovacevic, leaving Dibusz stranded as the ball looped over him into the net.

Celtic were firmly in the ascendancy now and came agonisingly close to taking the lead five minutes later. Hatem Elhamed worked a great position on the right and found Ntcham with a cutback. The French midfielder’s powerful shot bounced off the turf and smacked off the underside of the crossbar.

Ferencvaros were now being afforded precious few opportunities to exhibit their pace and directness on the counter as Celtic largely hemmed them into their defensive third of the pitch. But when another chance to break finally came their way with 15 minutes remaining, they took full advantage to leave Celtic staring down the barrel of elimination again.

A long ball out of defence saw Elhamed caught flat-footed and unable to match the pace of Nguen. The striker, who made his professional breakthrough under former Celtic boss Ronny Deila at Stromsgodset, showed great composure as he surged into the penalty area and slid a low shot beyond the advancing Barkas.

Lennon sent on £5 million signing Albian Ajeti for the closing stages but the Swiss striker, considered not match fit enough to start, was unable to rescue Celtic from a deeply dispiriting outcome.

Tokmac Nguen scores for Ferencvaros

Tokmac Nguen scored the winner for Ferencvaros

Celtic suffered their earliest Champions League exit in 15 years after falling to a shock defeat at the hands of Ferencvaros in Glasgow.

It seemed Neil Lennon’s side had recovered from David Siger’s early goal for the Hungarian champions when Ryan Christie’s deflected strike levelled the one-legged tie.

However, Tokmac Nguen’s breakaway goal snatched victory for Ferencvaros and ensured Celtic’s worst performance in the competition since Artmedia Bratislava knocked them out in 2005.

The Scottish champions now drop into the Europa League third qualifying round, the draw for which takes place on Tuesday.

Reaction & as it happened

Questions will likely be asked of Celtic and Lennon, just as they were before kick-off when it emerged leading striker Odsonne Edouard was injured and Christie would be deployed in his place.

The manager insisted that fellow forwards Albian Ajeti and Patryk Klimala were only fit enough for the bench.

Nevertheless, the hosts looked to have plenty of attacking threat as James Forrest forced an early parry from goalkeeper Denes Dibusz.

Ferencvaros head coach Sergei Rebrov had sacrificed striker Franck Boli from their 2-0 win over Djurgardens in the previous round, but his side were not intent on sitting back and replacement Siger made an instant impact.

Hatem Abd Elhamed was posted missing as Nguen, who scored a double against the Swedes, broke quickly and fed midfielder Somalia to win a corner. When it reached Siger, the midfielder was allowed too much to time to pick out the far corner from 18 yards.

Ferencvaros’ lack of match fitness began to tell as they defended ever deeper and Celtic peppered their goal with shots but they were efforts that failed to seriously trouble the visiting keeper.

Half-time allowed the Hungarians some respite, but the flow of possession continued after the break and a lovely spell of passing around the edge of the visitors’ box ended with Christie’s side-footed effort clipping a defender’s head and soaring over goalkeeper Dibusz.

Dibusz turned a Ntcham volley off the underside of the crossbar and then a low Christie drive wide as Celtic turned the screw.

But then came the goal that proved their downfall. Nguen outstripped Elhamed to a long ball out of defence, outmuscled the full-back, and slipped a finish past goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas from a narrow angle.

What did we learn?

On this evidence, Celtic rely too heavily on Edouard and paid for the French striker’s absence.

Lennon’s experiment of using Christie up front instead of Klimala or Ajeti failed to pay dividends against a side who were only playing their third fixture of the season. Christie did his bit by scoring, but too many other chances were squandered.

Ferencvaros have shown in recent European fixtures they are hard to beat away from home – they are now eight unbeaten – but Celtic have lost at home to a side who probably lack the quality to progress much further in the Champions League.

Man of the match – Tokmac Nguen

Tokmac Nguen (left) has scored three goals in two Champions League qualifiers

What did they say?

Celtic manager Neil Lennon: “It was easier than I thought it was going to be. We didn’t take our chances and we had plenty of them. The second goal is really poor, really poor decision making, and it’s individual mistakes that have cost us again. It’s not fine going out at this stage of the competition, because we’re better than that.”

Ferencvaros head coach Sergei Rebrov: “We have beat one of the best teams we have faced in qualification last year and this year. They have quality players, but I think we deserved this. Most of the time we defended, but football is about scoring goals, not about the possession of the ball.”

What’s next?

Celtic are left to reflect on another bruising failure to reach the lucrative Champions League group stage and will look to pick themselves up for Sunday’s game at home to Motherwell as they continue their quest to win a 10th consecutive domestic league title.

Ryan Christie has taken Neil Lennon to task over comments made about wantaways in the Celtic dressing room following the defeat to Ferencvaros in The Champions League Qualifiers. The Scotland Internationalist has said that he believes, looking back, that the beginning of Celtic’s struggles last season can be attributed to that defeat and the subsequent comments from Lennon.

Christie left Glasgow for EFL Championship side Bournemouth in a deal worth £4m, with £2.5m upfront for the Scotland Internationalist. However, he has now spoken out about the comments that former gaffer Lennon made.

Speaking to Football Scotland, Christie said that no-one stated that they wanted to leave, even if they had offers that were ‘promising’ but the defeat and subsequent comments shook the dressing room.

“It was tough because, number one, I don’t think anyone had stated they were absolutely desperate to leave at that point. A few people had maybe had offers in like Premier League or elsewhere that was promising for them.

“It was so early in the season where it’s a bit different for Celtic when you have such important games at the start of the season that it means you have to be focused straight away. That’s when the transfer market takes over a little bit at the start of the season.

“Did it have to be said? I’m not so sure. I think everyone was desperate to get a result. Everyone in our squad was firing on all cylinders to try and get through.

“Had we got into the Champions League that season I’m sure that would have steadied some players’ heads about leaving because that’s an attraction itself.

“People probably look back at those comments now and think, ‘That’s where it started going wrong so early’ but we took it as a minor blip. It was frustrating but it was still early and in our minds we were still thinking we’ll go on to have a successful season.”

Celtic had held discussions with the playmaker’s representatives but a decision to sell was made as Christie was free to leave for nothing as early as January. Christie was a mainstay in the Celtic sides that won the Treble Treble and Quadruple Treble and leaves to join the Championship club having scored 41 goals and 45 assists in 151 appearances for Celtic. His final appearance came in the defeat to Rangers, a poor end to what will be regarded as an excellent career in the Hoops.
