Trivia

  • European Cup Champions League Second Qualifying Round, 1st Leg

  • First competitive game for new Celtic manager Ange Postecoglu.
  • Callum McGregor announced as the new Celtic captain, his first game as captain. Official MOTM, but others say Soro or Welsh.
  • Competitive debut for Celtic players Abada and (ironically) Dane Murray!
  • Abada debut goal, Bitton sent off, Barkas howler for the goal.
  • Bitton: ““I lost my head for a second and got punished for that. Sorry again.”
  • FC Midtjylland without forward Aral Simsir after a positive coronavirus test was received. Sory Kaba won’t play due to wish to force a transfer.
  • Winner will play PSV or Galatasaray in next round. Lose to Midtjylland and Celtic will play Jablonec in the 3rd round of Europea League Qualifying. Sevco expected in next round of Champs league to play Malmö.
  • No away goals advantage rule now it’s been scrapped.
  • Dembele and Johnston out for long spell after injuries in recent friendlies
  • On previous rumours that ex-Celt & now FC Midtjylland’s captain Sviatchenko may return to Celtic:
  • “When it’s rumours, it’s rumours. Unless I hear anything else it’s just a rumour. But I’ve always said Celtic is close to my heart as is Midtjylland. Those are the two clubs that I follow and whatever happens, happens.”
  • Ange reveals that Griffiths is allowed back to train with the squad after recent off-field events. Shambles of a situation with him. Rumours he may be shipped to Sunderland, but few convinced.

Transfers

  • Brighton supposedly bidding 20m for Edouard acc to reports. Nothing concrete.
  • Reports of another stint at Celtic for Fraser Forster have been shot down.

Covid

  • Supporter Info for UEFA Qualifiers: In view of the ongoing restrictions and in order to minimise COVID-19 related risk, UEFA decided to not allow visiting fans to attend UEFA matches and not to apply the 5% away fans rule for all 2021/22 qualifying phase and play-offs matches
  • Country is opened up now, “Freedom day” (sic!) in England has happened, and similar enough in Scotland

Summary

Bitton via social media on his red card:
“I lost my head for a second and got punished for that. Sorry again.”

(joebloggscity of TheCelticWiki)
Upfront, few if anyone geuinely had any belief that Celtic would win this match, despite the turmoil having been mirrored at the Danish opponents camp too. Ange was in late to the job, and despite some new transfers they were not either yet arrived or settled, and what was left was still uninspiring as a whole and still low on confidence, as shown by a shambles of a performance v Preston in a poor defeat.

This was Ange’s first competitive match for Celtic, and already in interviews he appeared to show some frustration but he was left with a shambles to repair.

Celtic actually did very well and should have won with the team looking better than expected with good pressing and tempo albeit a lot of work still needed done by all.

However, two bad moments : unnecessary red card from Bitton and then Barkas howler for the goal.

Bitton apologised for his hot headed moment, and in fairness he was riled up after first a bad assault early in the game led to off field treatment, and then their player dived in the box. Bitton had got a yellow for a retaliation challenge a few mins earlier. He should have been more careful and killed off the momentum that Celtic had in the game to that point.

Christie, Soro and McGregor in particular were given plaudits as was young Welsh. Energetic display.

Opposition were quite brutal at times with a lot of gamesmanship. Game ended with ten a piece.

Great goal by Abada. Dreadful set piece goal conceded by Barkas who doesn’t convince anyone still. He could have done the simple goal keeper coaching manual 101 but luck hasn’t been on his side.

A tough away leg to come.

Twitter

-After surviving an energetic and aggressive opening 10 minutes we were controlling the game. A second goal before the break looked possible. We don’t have to seek misfortune these days which makes Bitton’s actions unforgivable.

-Good performance from Celtic. Were the better team and should have won the game. McGregor captains display. Christie outstanding. Welsh very good and Murray did well when he came in. Abada lively. Celtic need a goalkeeper badly… nobody thought it would be easy!

-A big positive for me was we looked a much more cohesive unit than at any point in the last year. I know that’s a low benchmark but in terms of Ange imposing his style on the team we’re ahead of where I expected us to be.Get the recruitment right & we could really fly.

-Ange Postecoglou: “We have to help and support these players with reinforcements and it’s got to happen quickly.” Another message sent to the Celtic board. Decent performance. Should have won comfortably. Abada, Christie excellent. Bitton, Barkas. Hmm. Celtic ought to progress

-If Celtic want to progress we need to be more ruthless and stop having blind faith that some players will change and miraculously get better. Same players, same mistakes – Barkas, Griffiths & Bitton. Ange needs to learn quickly that he can’t rely on them.

-Barkas & Bitton aside I thought we showed dig, forward passing and until the red card we looked a lot better in the final third. McGregor looked a different player and Soro much improved .. baby steps

Why Celtic can take positives to Midtjylland – but act of brainlessness could be so costly

The Scotsman newspaper

It is no exaggeration to say that there was almost an expectation the ledger for Ange Postecoglou would be stacked on the debit side following the second round Champions League second qualifier with which the new Celtic manager chalked up his first competitive encounter.

Instead, there were more pluses than minuses in the 1-1 draw with FC Midtjylland that will allow Postecoglou and his men to live another day in the competition. That day, of course, next Wednesday’s return leg that they approach with hope.

The monster minus, in among real credits for Celtic’s battling and some bright passages, came in the form of the incomprehensible brainlessness that led Nir Bitton to bring a red card entirely upon himself just before the interval.

Postecoglou did not enjoy the desired outcome, or the deserved outcome. A goal on his debut from £3.5million winger Liel Abada just before Bitton’s act of self-harm offered more promise than was ultimately delivered, with an Evander’s free-kick in the 72nd minute tying the scoreline. But Celtic looked the more accomplished side than their visitors, who themselves were reduced to ten men in the 55th minute for Anders Dreyer’s second yellow, his first coming in the altercation ensuing from his attempt to win a penalty that had caused Bitton to lose his mind.

Celtic’s Nir Bitton is red carded at the end of the first half.

The gloom-mongering for Celtic’s prospects was so acute, many felt that Postecoglou would require to pull off a miracle merely to keep Celtic in the tie by the end of the opening leg. And in one sense, even before a ball was kicked on the Australian’s first outing, he initiated one.

With Abada originally not listed in the club’s Champions League squad, it was only the wildcard option late on Monday night that could place him there. Yet, asked about the possibility of using such an option for any player on the eve of the tie, the Celtic manager said he would require a “miracle card” for any player to be added.

As expected, the new Celtic manager otherwise filled his starting places with as many faces as were available to him. The surprise was the team composition wasn’t all that felt belonging to an earlier age at the stadium on the night. The 9,000 supporters allowed in the arena with the relaxation of coronavirus restriction fair made a mighty din in the lead-up to kick-off. The gusto with which they delivered a rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone that was dedicated to the selfless actions of key workers during the pandemic entirely belied the fact that almost six-seventh of the stadium’s seats remained empty.

There was certainly an emptiness about the football – if you dare call it that – produced by two teams in the grip of difficult transitions under new management. It was all about bodies thumping into one another and the ball being hoofed skywards with eye-watering regularity early on.

Anders Dreyer trudges off after his red card.

Anders Dreyer trudges off after his red card.

Celtic were the team that actually found a way to play the ball and not their opponents and key to that was the energised and driven figure of Ryan Christie. Midway through the period, the attacker threw himself at a right-wing cross from the impressive Abada and clipped an effort on to the post before then heading just wide when provided the same service moments later.

Something was stirring within Celtic. And their growing menace produced the desired outcome in the 40th minute with Christie the creator. He drifted off the left and chopped a shot towards goal that resulted in keeper Jonas Lossl doing not more than slapping the ball into the path of Abada, who slammed it past him in a blur.

Everything looked so good for Postecoglou and Celtic at that juncture. Then Bitton, booked in the 38th minute, altered the entire complexion with an act of such rank stupidity.

Dreyer dropped to the ground in the penalty box after initiating contact with the centre-back, his attempt to win a penalty not bought by Swiss referee Sandro Schärer. They did, though, cause the Israeli to take leave of his senses as he went at it with the winger in a state of apoplexy, wagging his finger before jabbing it towards him and catching his face in the process. The contact was minimal – even if Dreyer dropped down as if mortally wounded – but there was only one course of action open to the official, with Bitton shown a second yellow and banished.

Vasilis Barkas is beaten by Evander’s free-kick.

Vasilis Barkas is beaten by Evander’s free-kick.

Dreyer, for his part, received a caution which would quickly prove equally significant with the forward suffering the same fate as Bitton only ten minutes into the second period after Schärer decided he couldn’t tolerate another act of simulation.

It seemed the break that would allow Celtic to go again, following the earlier need to withdraw Abada and replacing him with debutant centre-back Dane Murray. And they did with new captain Callum McGregor shaving the bar with a stinging effort before Odsonne Edouard came close as Postecoglou’s men began to open up the Midtjylland backline in which former Celtic defender Erik Sviatchenko was deployed.

It just seems fated that the course of his early days aren’t destined to run smooth for the new Celtic manager, though, and so it proved with the gunk of an equaliser that was ill-deserved by Bo Henriksen’s, frankly, lumpen side. Stephen Welsh, a commanding performer, seemed harshly dealt with when adjudged to have taken ball and man following a forceful challenge on Evander in the 72nd minute. The Brazilain capitalised with a fizzing free-kick that found the net off the far post. Questions will be asked of Vasilis Barkas half-push towards the ball as it whizzed beyond him. Yet, on the evidence of the 90-plus minutes, whatever damage the goal did need not be fatal to hope of progress next week in Denmark.

Ange Postecoglou takes responsibility for “badly prepared” Celtic even after creditable Champions League display

Celtic manager Ange Postecolgou looked inward as he assessed the tenure-opening 1-1 draw with FC Midtjylland that offers his team a fighting chance of qualification to the third qualifying round of the Champions League when the clubs meeting in the tie’s return leg next Wednesday.

Beset by problems in advance of his competitive opener, the Greek-Australain had suggested the club hadn’t moved quickly enough to recruit new faces, the only debutatant at Parkhead for game, Liel Abada, netting 40 minutes into his debut – only for Nir Bitton to earn a needless red card just afterwards.

However, as he reflected on encounter in which his team delivered drive, determination and a degree of deftness that confounded lowly expectations, Postecoglou opted to change tack.

“I am confident tonight that will go [to Denmark] and put in a good performance with the spirit we have. I can’t ask any more of the players,” he said. “Sometimes the result belies the facts before you. We will be better prepared no doubt, in eight days’ time.

“In fact I don’t think we will ever be as badly prepared as we were tonight and that’s on me, going into such an important game. It is on me. I’m the manager of the football club. I’m the one that takes that responsibility of providing support for the players and staff. If things aren’t happening it’s on me to make them happen.”

Postecoglou was in no mood to castigate Bitton for his jab to the face Anders Dreyer that earned him a second yellow, or question keeper Vasilis Barkas for appearing to lose the flight of Evander’s free-kick and display soft hands in failing to keep out what proved the 72nd minute equaliser.

“I’m getting a lot of glass half empty questions,” he said. “I think there was plenty of positives rather than people looking for little things that potentially didn’t go right. I thought it was a decent strike, we limited them to a couple of shots on goal with a really brand new back four.

“The midfield worked their socks off. The amount of running that [Ismaila] Soro and Cal [Callum McGregor] and Ryan Christie did was unbelievable. I’m frustrated at the result because the players didn’t get the result I thought they deserved.”

Liel Abada’s debut goal had Celtic ahead at the break

Ange Postecoglou said he has not “done a great job so far” as his Celtic tenure began with a Champions League qualifying draw with Midtjylland that saw both sides reduced to 10 men.

Impressive debutant Liel Abada gave Celtic the lead but was replaced before the break following Nir Bitton’s second yellow for reacting to simulation from Anders Dreyer.

The Midtjylland winger was later sent off himself after repeating the offence but Evander flashed a free-kick past Vasilis Barkas to level the tie.

The return leg takes place next Wednesday in Denmark, with the winners progressing to face PSV Eindhoven or Galatasaray in the third qualifying round, and Postecoglou said his side “will be better prepared, no doubt”.

“I don’t think we will ever be as badly prepared as we were tonight and that’s on me,” he said.

“I haven’t done a great job so far because with the disruptions we’ve had, we haven’t been able to bring the players in. My role is to try and reinforce and prepare this squad.

“To their credit, the players didn’t look for excuses. They put in a solid shift and I’m just disappointed they didn’t get the rewards for what I thought was an outstanding performance.”

Encouraging signs on frustrating night

Manager Postecoglou received a warm welcome from the 9,000 crowd as Celtic played a competitive home game in front of fans for the first time in 16 months.

With a depleted squad and the Australian still adjusting to his new role, Celtic needed calm heads as they attempted to edge closer to a first Champions League group-stage appearance since 2017-18.

Israel’s Bitton, 29, was by far the most experienced member of a makeshift backline, only to let his team-mates down when they had wrested control after a disjointed start.

Bitton’s countryman, 19-year-old Abada, had lit up the occasion before his lively debut on the right flank was cut short.

After Odsonne Edouard sent a snap-shot narrowly over the crossbar, Ababa’s two precise deliveries to Ryan Christie resulted in the Scotland midfielder stabbing a shot against a post then sending a flying header too high.

Both players were again involved as the opening goal of the Postecoglou era arrived in the 39th minute. Christie’s angled strike from the left was parried by goalkeeper Jonas Lossl and Abada pounced to tuck in an awkward finish.

Celtic were a goal up and looking good – then Bitton had a rush of blood to the head. Dreyer tumbled under his challenge in the hope of winning a penalty, prompting the Celtic player – booked for an earlier foul – to poke a finger in the winger’s face and earn a second yellow.

Abada was sacrificed, with 18-year-old defender Dane Murray coming on for a debut – partnering 21-year-old Stephen Welsh at centre-back – and the complexion of the tie seemed to have altered drastically.

But Dreyer was dismissed shortly after the interval for a tumble under pressure from Welsh, and captain Callum McGregor thundered a shot off the crossbar as Celtic tried to immediately capitalise.

Christie’s pass then superbly split the Danish side’s defence, but Edouard’s meek shot was blocked by goalkeeper Lossl’s leg.

Midtyjlland broke upfield and Brazilian midfielder Evander whistled a drive inches past.

But the hosts failed to heed the warning and the Danes, who hadn’t created a clear-cut chance, were level when Evander whipped a free-kick from the left into the top corner, with goalkeeper Barkas looking suspect.

Celtic seemed more likely to grab a winner, with Christie firing off target and substitute Tom Rogic having an effort saved, but the game petered out to a frustrating draw for the Scottish side.

Man of the match – Ryan Christie

The attacking midfielder was Celtic’s main creative force and put in a tireless shift

What did we learn?

The early signs of Postecoglou’s philosophy were apparent as Celtic, despite their inexperience in defence, built from the back and tried to play at a high tempo. Teenage defender Murray can be proud of his performance having been thrown in at the Champions League deep end.

However, the individual calamities that blighted Celtic last season again came to the fore. Bitton’s needless red card had echoes of his Old Firm derby dismissal in January, while the reinstated Barkas wasted a chance to nail down the number one spot and continues to underwhelm as a £4.5m signing.

While an opening victory eluded him, Postecoglou will have seen little to worry him in Denmark. Midtjylland, who sold star midfielder Frank Onyeka to Brentford earlier in the day, are a functional team but lacking in quality.

What did they say?

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “I was frustrated at the result, not the performance, but Nir had already been booked and when you’ve been booked you have to be careful in your actions.

“It’s disappointing for him more than anything, because he was really keen to put in a strong performance. “He had started the game really well for us, so it’s disappointing for him that he misses the second game as well.”

What’s next?

The sides go again in the second leg in Denmark on 28 July (18:45 BST), and Celtic begin their Premiership season three days later away to Hearts (20:00 BST).
