Trivia

  • KO: 15:00; moved to Sunday due to UEFA Cup; Premier TV
  • League Cup, round of 16
  • Celtic were defeated by Hearts in opening league game of the season.
  • Celtic face Raith Rovers in the next found round at home.
  • Hearts have hit a new season ticket landmark. The club have confirmed 11,500 briefs have been sold.  Good for Scottish football.
  • Reports: Vasilis Barkas will not be returning to AEK Athens this summer from Celtic. Christie talks ongoing and so on and so on!
  • Over 50,000 supporters today at #Celtic Park for an early round league Cup tie. Brilliant
  • Debut for James McCarthy
  • Christie out thru injury.
  • Bayern Munich legend Gerd Muller has passed away, aged 75.  One of football’s true greats. RIP
  • Politics – Forces from US et al are leaving Afghanistan, and sadly govt collapses putting country under control of Taliban forces. Kabul’s Saigon moment (all over town): A thousand passengers are attempting to board a plan destined for Istanbul (that can only take 300).  Absolute mayhem at Kabul Airport. No security, no order…

Covid

  • Full capacity crowds permitted at Celtic Park from Monday (just past), August 9 onwards. Although there are still some small sections still blocked due to some covid rules issues.
  • No Hearts fans despite return of capacity crowds, due to the need for ‘red zones’ within the stadium, with some seats remaining closed off in order to maintain player and staff bubbles. Disappointing to hear as both home & away fans needed at games.

Summary

Ange “Our football for first 60 mins was outstanding. The best we’ve played since I arrived. We didn’t get rewards the play deserved”.

RM of KDS:

A doing especially in the first half but the failure to take chances, the defensive frailties, the lack of fitness in certain players and the lack of a quality squad, made this game far closer than it really should have been.
Beaton is ridiculous. Their treatment of Kyogo in first half was scandalous and he did hee haw to stop it.
Gordon laughably bad at the third goal. No one say he should still be our keeper ever again.
Starfelt needs to up his game. Fine when under no pressure but takes an age to clear.
Mccarthy is miles off it. Go past him and he isnt catching you. Looked good on ball and passing with either foot was good.

CA of KDS:
From the three games we’ve played this week that was the best yet. Yip, put six past Dundee, and three past Jablonec without reply, but today’s domination topped the lot. The movement, the speed,
the willingness to make room for a pass was a thrill to watch and Hearts will be glad to be out of there just conceding three.
Starsfelt is still coming to terms with his new surroundings so errors will occur, but will improve the more he plays, don’t think he lost an aerial dual all day, and in Welsh I think we have a really talented CB who is solid in both the air and on the ground and excellent sense of positioning.
I watched McCarthy closely when he came on, didn’t waste any time in urging those around him to move into space, obviously an Ange instruction, and when they did he covered the spaces they left.
Finally a word on billy boy beaton, ignored holding, raking tackles and playing the man before the ball first, Haring should have seen red long before he was taken off for all of the afore mentioned combined with dissent on more than one occasion.

In summary, yip we still need bodies in the door, but those presently there seem to be really buying into Angeball, roll on Wednesday.

-FT #Celtic 3 Hearts 2 If ever a scoreline didn’t reflect a game it’s this one. Could/should have been 5-0 ahead at HT. still dominated 2nd half but need to finish off sublime fitba with goals play merits. Hearts goal late in injury time made score look far closer than game was.

-Celtic should’ve won by more than a few to spare this afternoon but the goals they lost serve as a gentle reminder to the board and anyone who was trying to argue against it that despite the upturn in performances & results, their defence still needs major reinforcements.

-Biggest concern is how hard we need to work for a goal yet give them up with ease, ten attempts per goal today for Celtic 2 attempts per goal for Hearts. Football is amazing but we need to tighten up at the back.

-That’s 5 in 5 for Kyogo Furuhashi for Celtic!
An emphatic finish by Celtic Park’s new Japanese hero and Craig Gordon can’t keep it out

-BA Looking at the highlights there, Edouard had 2 great chances to set up -unobstructed shots from central areas but dives and shoots. Hopefully it’ll come with his confidence coming back

-Celtic should’ve won by more than a few to spare this afternoon but the goals they lost serve as a gentle reminder to the board and anyone who was trying to argue against it that despite the upturn in performances & results, their defence still needs major reinforcements.

-Kyogo has now scored on his first start in three different competitions. Europa League, League, League Cup

-Great attacking play but the defensive frailties remain. Kyogo is a star, Rogic has been a revelation, McGregor outstanding.Starfelt steady most of the time but seems to let a mistake get to him and they usually come in little clusters. Teams are targeting our left.

Celtic record one of most one-sided 3-2 victories ever seen as Hearts head back along M8 counting lucky stars
https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/celtic-record-one-of-most-one-sided-3-2-victories-ever-seen-as-hearts-head-back-along-m8-counting-lucky-stars-3347193
If ever a scoreline was misleading, it is this one. Anyone who didn’t bear witness to another hugely encouraging 90 minutes for Ange Postecoglou and his burgeoning Celtic side might form the impression they edged a closely contested affair.
By Stephen Halliday
Sunday, 15th August 2021, 5:19 pm

The reality was that they claimed their place in the Premier Sports Cup quarter-finals with an utterly dominant performance against a Hearts side who should have headed back along the M8 after suffering a far greater margin of defeat. This was possibly the most one-sided 3-2 victory you could ever see.

There certainly won’t be too many gripes among the Celtic fans at the failure of Postecoglou’s men to translate their superiority into the drubbing this ought to have been.

The eye-catching momentum Celtic have built up over the past couple of weeks was maintained with goals from Odsonne Edouard, Stephen Welsh and the scintillating Kyogo Furuhashi proving sufficient as Hearts’ own sequence of six successive wins since the start of the season came to a juddering halt.

Somehow trailing just 2-0 at half-time, Hearts were given some hope by Liam Boyce’s penalty early in the second half. But Furuhashi’s fifth goal of the campaign staved off any threat of an unlikely comeback with substitute Aaron McEneff’s stoppage time goal too late to make any difference.

Neilson had predicted this tie would represent the biggest test his team had faced in six months and Celtic wasted no time in proving him to be emphatically correct in his assumption.

The potent combination of fluidity and intensity produced by the hosts saw Hearts placed in a stranglehold from the start, one they were simply unable to extricate themselves from.

While the Gorgie club’s fans may ultimately feel relieved they were denied access to Celtic Park on this occasion, it was a veritable feast for the eyes of a jubilant home support who are gleefully buying into the style of play being implemented by Postecoglou.

It was close to remarkable that Hearts actually managed to hold out for almost half an hour before Celtic’s relentless attacking movement delivered the breakthrough.

The visitors’ goal had lived a charmed life up until then as a series of crosses and surges into Craig Gordon’s penalty area somehow reaped no reward.

The Hearts captain made a fine save to keep out Furuhashi’s first attempt of the afternoon before a combination of desperate defending and poor finishing saw the Japanese international, Tom Rogic and Edouard all fail to convert clear-cut chances.

But Edouard, having been booked for simulation after taking a lazy tumble inside the box under a John Souttar challenge, simply couldn’t miss the opportunity which came his way in the 29th minute.

It stemmed from a sublime pass with the outside of his right boot from Furuhashi which found James Forrest on the right. The winger’s low cutback found Edouard unmarked for a close range tap-in beyond the helpless Gordon.

Edouard should have scored again three minutes minutes later from a similarly inviting position but this time shot tamely straight at Gordon.

Celtic’s second goal wasn’t delayed for too much longer. It came from a short corner routine on the left worked by Furuhashi and Edouard, the striker floating the ball into the six yard box for Welsh to head home.

Neilson could only feel grateful there was further damage inflicted upon Hearts before the interval and his half-time substitution of Josh Ginnelly for Andy Halliday succeeded in making his team more competitive.

Ginnelly provided an outlet for Hearts to get higher up the pitch, something they were unable to do at all in the first half.

Celtic continued to look the more threatening side with two more smart saves from Gordon denying Edouard. But Ginnelly recorded Hearts’ first attempt at goal in the 54th minute before playing his part as they halved the deficit three minutes later.

As Boyce moved ahead of the hesitant Carl Starfelt to get on the end of Ginnelly’s cross, he was clipped by the Swedish defender. It was a clear penalty and Boyce was unfazed by Hart’s animated efforts to unsettle him as he sent the former England goalkeeper the wrong way from the spot.

Celtic were suddenly facing the prospect of being made to pay for not putting the tie way beyond Hearts’ reach but it took them just six minutes to restore their two-goal advantage.

It was a calamity of sorts for Gordon who was unable to match his previous excellence as he contrived to help a rising shot from Furuhashi high into his own net. But it was another high quality goal from Celtic’s perspective as Rogic’s superb through ball created the opening for Furuhashi who fully deserved to see his name on the scoresheet.

Celtic should have added to their tally in the closing stages which saw James McCarthy given a warm reception from the crowd when he made his debut as a substitute for Rogic.

It was Hearts, however, who had the final word when McEneff latched onto Stephen Kingsley’s low cross and slid the ball beyond Hart at his near post in stoppage time.

Celtic (4-3-3): Hart, Ralston, Welsh, Starfelt, Taylor; Rogic (McCarthy 75), McGregor, Turnbull (Soro 88); Forrest, Edouard (Ajeti 88), Furuhashi (Montgomery 75). Subs not used: Bain, Bitton, Griffiths, Urhoghide, Shaw.

Hearts (4-4-2): Gordon, Souttar, Halkett, Kingsley, Cochrane (Walker 75); M.Smith, Baningime, Haring (McEneff 68), Halliday (Ginnelly 46); Mackay-Steven, Boyce. Subs not used: Stewart, Henderson, C.Smith, Denholm.

Odsonne Edouard’s well-crafted goal gave Celtic a deserved lead

Celtic gained revenge on Hearts to sweep through to a Scottish League Cup last-eight tie against Raith Rovers.

Ange Postecoglou’s men, beaten in their league opener at Tynecastle, dominated but finished with a slender win to end the visitors’ 100% start to the season.

Liam Boyce’s penalty gave Hearts a lifeline after Odsonne Edouard and Stephen Welsh had Celtic cruising.

Kyogo Furuhashi soon restored the two-goal advantage, with Aaron McEneff replying deep into added time.

Reaction & as it happened

Celtic will host second-tier Raith – who knocked out Aberdeen – next month as they bid to regain the trophy they won four years in a row until last season.

The margin of defeat flattered Hearts after a one-sided contest. Celtic have hit their stride since that defeat at Tynecastle, with their winning streak now extended to four games with 16 goals scored.

The loss of soft goals blotted an impressive home performance in which Edouard – restored for his first start in four matches – could have had a first-half hat-trick.

Celtic’s intensity and work-rate was matched by their quality as they hemmed Hearts in. The stats at the interval were revealing – Celtic had 82% possession and 21 shots while Hearts had none.

The only surprise was Robbie Neilson’s side lasted until almost the half-hour mark before conceding.

Furuhashi had a near-post drive tipped away by Craig Gordon, Edouard dragged a shot narrowly off target and Tom Rogic did likewise after leaving Peter Haring and Craig Halkett floundering with nifty footwork.

Welsh stooped to head over from a dinked David Turnbull corner and Furuhashi had a shot blocked by Stephen Kingsley as Hearts failed to stem the flow.

The opening goal proved worth the wait. Furuhashi’s sublime pass with the outside of his boot found James Forrest galloping down the right, and his low cutback was met with a first-time finish by Edouard.

The Frenchman should have quickly made it two, with Gordon smothering his close-range shot, but teed up Welsh for the second. Hearts were caught dozing at a short corner as Edouard slung over a cross and Welsh thundered a header into the bottom corner of the net.

There was no let-up from the home side, with the overworked Gordon twice foiling Edouard after the restart and Welsh heading over.

Celtic should have been out of sight, but sprightly half-time substitute Josh Ginnelly finally gave Hearts a foothold as their change of shape brought improvement. The winger’s cross wasn’t dealt with by Carl Starfelt, who clattered Boyce and the Northern Irishman sent Joe Hart the wrong way from the spot.

Suddenly Celtic’s intensity dipped and passes began to go astray. However, Furuhashi soon restored calm, beating Gordon at the near post after being released in the left-hand channel by Rogic.

Furuhashi, substitute Adam Montgomery and Callum McGregor all came close to adding a fourth for Celtic, who gave James McCarthy a debut off the bench, but McEneff tucked home a Kingsley cutback in the final seconds.

What did they say?

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “For the first hour we were outstanding – it’s as well as we’ve played this season. The only thing is we didn’t take more of the chances we created.

“The last half hour we got a bit ragged, which is understandable and down to fatigue, but overall I’m pleased.”

Hearts head coach Robbie Neilson: “We couldn’t get a foothold in the game in the first half but I was really pleased with the second half after we changed shape and played with more belief.

“We scored the goals and had Celtic under pressure at times. We’re really disappointed to be out of the cup but we’ll take the positives.”
What’s next?

Celtic turn their attention to the Europa League on Wednesday, with a play-off first leg at home to AZ Alkmaar (19:45 BST), followed by the Premiership visit of St Mirren on Saturday (15:00).

Hearts bid to make it three league wins from three when they host Aberdeen on Sunday (15:00).
