Trivia

  • KO: 3pm, Saturday
  • Debut for two players Jota, and Cameron Carter Vickers (CCV)
  • Debut match and goal for Cameron Carter Vickers. Albeit  via a massive deflection and comical goal!
  • Double for Ajeti, who actually was given a lot of stick for the first half performance.
  • [John] Thomson 90 jersey worn by Joe Hart  before the game – A Mark of Respect, Joe Hart’s Solid Start at Celtic, in honour of John Thomson (90th anniversary)
  • Odsonne Edouard: creates history in England, quickest debut goal ever in the EPL (after 28 seconds) his first touch and scores another ten mins later with last touch of his debut for Crystal Palace.
  • Ralston out due to covid restrictions.
  • The Kano Foundation: Today we welcomed our 11,000th Child. Incredible!
  • Back after the long unwanted international break! Ireland lost dramatically to Portugal with Ronaldo scoring two dramatic goals stealing headlines across the globe (as created new world record just as Ronaldo re-signed for ManU). In other Shane Duffy saved Ireland’s blushes with late goal in 1-1 draw with Azerbaijan, then 1-1 v Serbia. Scotland lose 2-0 to Denmark, but 1-0 win v Moldova & Austria. Neil Lennon said to be favourite to take on Ireland managerial job as Ireland are practically out of the reckoning.
  • In a shock move, Celtic Chief Exec Dom McKay has stepped down after only a few months in the role!  (see below). Michael Nicholson takes over the role in an acting position.
  • Kyogo Furuhashi will miss at least a month after sustaining a knee injury while on international duty with Japan. The forward will miss the start of Europa League campaign and four Premiership games.
  • Paralympics in Tokyo comes to a close. Some great moments and heartbreak too. Scottish paralympian Sam Kinghorn won two medals in the track racing. Exceptional stuff.  Scotland’s Owen Miller claimed a shock 1500m gold in the pouring rain, and various others.
  • Indie group Mogwai in final 12 for prestigious Mercury Music Award 2021 but it goes to Arlo Parks.
  • Sevco: civil war begins between the H&H podcast & club over disturbing/disgusting comments, even made front page of the Daily Record, with some putting it down to throwing people under the bus to cover their own backs!  H&H have been getting preferential treatment from Sevco which has stirred things up.
  • As respected journo Graham Speirs @grahamspiers stated:
@grahamspiers: “”Papes”, “tarriers”, “Romanists”, “beat rattlers”, “mongs”, “spazzies”…Well this is pleasant, progressive stuff. Well done Stewart Robertson.Well done Rangers FC.”
The Daily Record: ““Some of these tweets are beyond offensive.”
  • @grahamspiers: “And I can tell you exactly what’s going to happen next…Rangers fans’ tweets and blogs coming out NOT attacking the actual bigotry or prejudice…but attacking those who complain about the prejudice…‘our enemies’ ‘our haters’…”
  • @youtubeceltifc : “To get an idea of how serious Rangers* take bigotry, they partnered with Heart & Hand. H&H is named after a line in the song, Derry’s Walls, in which they celebrate killing Catholics. No one at Rangers* considered this before partnering because bigotry is so fluid inside Ibrox.”
  • Sevco fans apparently trashed parts of the St Johnstone end, with some leaving sectarian sticker like “All Taigs are targets” on the seats etc. Sickening.
  • US Open Tennis: UK’s Radacanu makes history by winning women’s title at just 18, making it thru from the qualifiers (first ever to reach a grand slam final) and not not lose a set. Congrats.

“We just need to be careful about the narrative about who brought me to the club…”
Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou says chief exec Dom McKay leaving after 2 months isn’t a distraction to him…

(anonymous):
Controlled the game. First half was ok but lacked a cutting edge. Second half better. Carter-Vickers was very good. Jota played well.Ajeti had a very quiet first half but grew in confidence when he scored. Had a pretty good 30 mins at the end.We missed kyogo. The forward line buzzes when he’s there. Hopefully ajeti will get confidence from today. Not sure he fits the system but i think he’s trying. One fantastic save from hart at 1-0 too.

@celticgossip: The injury to Kyogo is a blow and I wish him a speedy recovery. However, it is an opportunity for Jota, Ajeti and most of all Giorgos Giakoumakis. Time for new hero’s bhoys. HH

@celtic1967: FT: #Celtic 3-0 Ross County

A dominant performance from us towards the end. Ran riot with two goals from Ajeti as well as a goal from Carter-Vickers. Clearly missed some players, but can’t complain about a 3-0 win, well in bhoys!

@catholicutd: We are over the moon that @cameroncv2 both scored and received the Man of the Match award on his debut for @CelticFC today.  Destined to do well for the Hoops!!   Congratulations

@agentscotland: Good second half from Celtic, stating the obvious but they missed Kyogo’s energy & movement in the first half, Montgomery made a big difference second half, huge two goals from Ajeti, impressive debut for Carter-Vickers, everything good for Ross County came through Charles-Cook.

@faddywaddy: Ajeti, happy for him to get to poachers goals. CCV, great debut, solid all round performance and deserved MOTM.  Starfelt, probably most comfortable performance so far. Joe Hart, reliable as usual. Montgomery, did really well coming on, good game. Well deserved victory

Ange Postecoglou has say on Celtic protests and speaks on Dom McKay exit for first time

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has backed the right of supporters to protest against the club’s board.

A banner criticising major shareholder Dermot Desmond, chairman Ian Bankier and their fellow directors was held aloft during Celtic’s 3-0 home league win over Ross County on Saturday afternoon.

It came after the shock resignation of Dom McKay as the club’s chief executive on Friday after just 72 days in the job.

“We are all transient figures at this great club,” said Postecoglou. “The constant is the fans and they expect us to get on with it.

“I’ve done that throughout my career and will continue to. Everyone is allowed to express opinions in whatever way they choose to. Our job is to send the 60,000 here home happy and the millions around the world.

“Sometimes it’s good to be kept on your toes and I am sure our supporters will do that.”

Postecoglou played down the influence McKay had on his appointment as manager in the summer and expressed his happiness at the prospect of now working under interim CEO Michael Nicholson.

“We have to be careful with the narrative of who brought me to the club,” added the Australian coach who took charge of Celtic in the summer after the club’s failed pursuit of former Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe.

“I was as surprised as anyone that Dom resigned but I am going to be respectful of him and his family. When people cite personal reasons, there’s reasons for that. Michael is now in charge and that’s good because I already know him.”

How Cameron Carter-Vickers struck it lucky as Celtic eventually overpower Ross County
On the basis that you earn your luck, Celtic are entitled to feel they did enough to deserve the slice of fortune which set them on their way to victory over Ross County.

But this wasn’t an afternoon without its anxieties for manager Ange Posteocglou and the home fans at Celtic Park before Cameron Carter-Vickers marked his debut with the goal which finally broke County’s resistance midway through the second half.

Until the on-loan Tottenham centre-half’s shot took a wild deflection to loop over visiting goalkeeper Ross Laidlaw, a combination of poor finishing from Celtic and intelligent defending from County had the outcome very much in doubt.

In the end, it was convincing enough from Postecoglou’s perspective as two goals from Albian Ajeti – his first since February – ensured no more ground was lost in these embryonic stages of the title race.

Carter-Vickers could certainly feel satisfied with his afternoon’s work. While he appeared to feel the pace of the contest at times, he contributed robustly to a clean sheet which was threatened more than once by County’s counter-attacking threat.

Portuguese winger Jota had a less notable debut. The Benfica loanee showed some neat touches but was let down too often by the quality of his final shot or cross, including one almost comical attempt at goal which went out for a throw-in.

Laidlaw made one fine save for County in the first half, touching Liel Abada’s shot onto the crossbar, but it was generally Celtic’s wastefulness which was the biggest barrier to them.

Jota blazed over from a good position, while Abada saw another effort deflected onto the bar before being guilty of a horrible miss from inside the six yard box after being set up by Tom Rogic.

Celtic had to replace Greg Taylor with Adam Montgomery early in the second half when the Scotland squad left-back suffered a recurrence of a shoulder injury.

While they continued to dominate possession, it was with an increasing lack of cohesion and amidst growing signs of frustration in the stands.

The mood changed in the 64th minute, however, when Carter-Vickers decided to have a go from distance. Without the diversion it took off a defender, it would have been unlikely to greatly trouble Laidlaw who was helpless to prevent the ball spinning over his head into the net.

County substitute Dominic Samuel should have equalised four minutes later but sent his close range header from Regan Charles-Cook’s cross straight at Joe Hart.

That miss was punished by Celtic who went straight up the pitch to make it 2-0. Ajeti had hardly enjoyed the most impressive of days, his lack of movement underlining just how much Celtic missed the injured Kyogo Furuhashi.

But the Swiss international did what was required of him when he headed home Abada’s perfect cross from the right and then, with five minutes remaining, was on the spot again to nod in from close range after substitute James McCarthy’s effort rebounded off the bar.

Celtic (4-3-3): Hart, Juranovic, Carter-Vickers, Starfelt, Taylor (Montgomery 48); Rogic (McCarthy 78), McGregor (Soro 68), Turnbull; Abada, Ajeti, Jota. Subs not used: Bain, Urhoghide, Shaw, Welsh.

Ross County (4-2-3-1): Laidlaw, Burroughs (Watson 73), Clarke, Baldwin, B.Paton; Spittal, Tillson; A.Samuel (H.Paton 46), Callachan, Charles-Cook; White (D.Samuel 63). Subs not used: Cancola, Robertson, Hungbo, Maynard-Brewer.

Albian Ajeti: Nothing to prove at Celtic – I will score if I get more game-time from manager

Albian Ajeti claims he will be a guaranteed source of goals for Celtic if he gets more regular game-time for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

The Swiss international striker marked his first starting appearance of the season with a double in the 3-0 Premiership win over Ross County at Celtic Park.

With Japanese forward Kyogo Furuhashi out injured and new signing Giorgos Giakoumakis not yet fully fit, Ajeti is likely to lead the line again for Celtic when they open their Europa League group stage campaign against Real Betis in Seville on Thursday.

“I had nothing to prove because I have been training very well and working very hard every day so I don’t need to prove anything to anyone,” said Ajeti.

“If I play and get starts in games, then I will score. We play with high intensity and high pressing where we create many chances and we will always score lots of goals. It doesn’t matter who scores but if we have the chances, then I’ll be there to score the goals.

“The performance was important for us and we performed as well as we have for the last couple of weeks. We did a lot well today and I’m happy to help the team with goals in what was a tough game.”

Celtic manager Postecoglou, who confirmed that left-back Greg Taylor is a doubt for the Betis match after suffering a recurrence of a shoulder injury, was pleased with his team’s perseverance as they had to wait over an hour before debutant Cameron Carter-Vickers gave them the breakthrough.

“The result was positive, the performance was okay,” said Postecoglou. “We started really well and just needed a goal.

“We lacked a little bit of fluency in the front third. In these games, if you don’t score early it gives encouragement to the opposition and they hung in there and defended well at times.

“We overdid things towards the back end of the first-half but I thought after half-time we got back to being disciplined. We knew at some point we’d be able to break them open and the pleasing thing was that we did that trying to play our football rather than doing different things.”

Ajeti header v County
Albian Ajeti’s first goals since February sealed the three points for Celtic

Manager Ange Postecoglou said Celtic required “perseverance” to earn a hard-fought Scottish Premiership win against a stubborn Ross County.

County frustrated the hosts until the 64th minute, when debutant centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers’ long-range strike deflected over Ross Laidlaw.

Albian Ajeti headed in six minutes later to kill the game, before nodding in a third to lift Celtic to fifth.

“We needed a goal to open to them up,” Postecoglou said.

“When you don’t get it, it gives them confidence and they defended well. We’ve seen in other games if we score early it opens the game up. The info we gave to the whole group at half-time was ‘stick to our principles’.”

County drop to 11th and are still without a league win this term.

But Malky Mackay will be encouraged by his side’s shape and organisation for over an hour of the contest.

As for Celtic, Postecoglou’s men put distractions surrounding chief executive Dom McKay’s shock departure to one side as they eventually broke down a resolute visiting defence to secure a third straight home league win.

Reaction & as it happened

The hosts also had to deal with the absence of Kyogo Furuhashi, who is out for at least a month with a knee injury.

Expectation was placed on the shoulders of debutant winger Jota and he was living up to the hype early on, having a shot from distance saved and a close-range effort sail over either side of Liel Abada having an attempt parried onto the bar.

Celtic continued to probe and a free-flowing breakaway resulted in Ajeti having a tame effort saved, before David Turnbull put a 25-yard effort just wide of the near post.

County put in a power of relentless work to limit Celtic’s chances and began to pose a threat of their own when Blair Spittal fired in a dangerous cross to no avail, and Jack Burroughs then lashed wide when a cross was the better option.

Up the other end, Abada struck the woodwork again with a deflected effort before firing a near-post finish into the side net. And there was a sense that a bit of frustration was creeping in, with Abada, Josip Juranovic and Jota firing efforts off target.

It seemed it would take something special or fortuitous to break County down and it was the latter as Cameron-Vickers’ deflected effort looped over a helpless Laidlaw.

County did not go down without a fight as Joe Hart had to pull off a smart save to deny substitute Dominic Samuel’s header, but the contest was over when Abada’s inch-perfect delivery was headed in by Ajeti.

The Swiss striker added his second, and Celtic’s third, when he nodded in a close-range rebound.
Man of the match – Jota
The Portuguese winger will be disappointed he failed to score a debut goal, but the 22-year-old can still be happy with his afternoon’s work after being at the heart of Celtic’s positive attacking play
The Portuguese winger will be disappointed he failed to score a debut goal, but the 22-year-old can still be happy with his afternoon’s work after being at the heart of Celtic’s positive attacking play
What did we learn?

Celtic did not allow the media circus around McKay’s departure, Kyogo’s absence, and a stubborn County to derail their day.

Their past two home league games have seen Postecoglou’s side dismantle Dundee and St Mirren 6-0, but they had to show a patient side of their game on Saturday to gain three valuable points.

County’s start to the season has been unforgiving, with their first five league games coming against last season’s top five.

It was looking bleak for Mackay, but a valuable point at Aberdeen a fortnight ago and a promising display for large spells at Celtic will give the County boss hope going into a home game against Hearts next Saturday.
What did they say?

Ross County manager Malky Mackay: “I’ve got a sense of disappointment, but we’ve got to get over that. The game plan was working.

“In the first half we had a couple of chances across their goal that on another day we might be more clinical with. But I’m seeing a group that are beginning to grow and play the way I want them to.”
