Good to see Rangers ground breaking diversity and inclusion campaign ‘Everyone Anyone’ is working well…
  • Chris Sutton had a dig at Rangers after their 2-0 Europa League loss to Lyon at Ibrox. The former Celtic striker, as well as Neil Lennon, were denied access to work at Ibrox as part of BT Sport’s coverage due to security concerns. The Scottish champions stated they had “complied with all UEFA contractual obligations to facilitate BT as host broadcaster”. Sutton clearly took some satisfaction in the result, tweeting “didn’t miss much”.

Covid

  • Angst & controversy over proposed vaccine passports and how it would work (or not) at football matches.
  • Down south they have vetoed vaccine passports (more for political reasons than for other reasons).

Summary

Ex-Celt Paul Lambert: “Does seeing the team go back there this week bring back memories for me? Yeah, bad ones!” said the club’s former midfielder, who was withdrawn 76 minutes in and would start only 18 more games across the closing two years of the glittering O’Neill era. “That’s the biggest regret the players from our era had – that we never won it there. We were so close to doing it.” “We ran them so close, a really good Porto team who went on to win the Champions League a year later. I think it all hinged on a bit of luck, really,” Lambert said. “But probably if you ask any of us from that squad, that game and not winning it will be the biggest regret for us.”

Ange: “Mate, I stay out of the kitchen so pots aren’t my forte,” he said. “I don’t look too much into stuff like that. If anyone suggests there’s some sort of hierarchal criteria that puts one team above another…What I do know is that they [Betis] are a quality team. They finished sixth in La Liga, which is a fantastic competition. You just have to look at the teams they finished close to know they are a quality team and they have a quality manager who has been around for a long time and had a lot of success.”

First match of the Europa legaue group stages for Celtic. Tough one as travelling abroad with no away fans allowed. However, got off to an incredible start with two goals and looked to be coasting it only for Real Betis to turn up and go into half-time level at 2-2, and then score two further in the second half to close out the match. Ralston dragged Celtic into the game with a late goal but it ended 4-3, and Celtic were not at the races.

Before the game, all thought that Celtic would be losing by a barrowload due to the absences, but the absences were mostly all attackers, and it was the defence that was a shambles (albeit Hart in goals actually had a fine game with some good saves).

The manager deserves criticism too, and after Soro was clumsy again to get a very early yellow card it scuppered aspects of the game as he was afraid of a second (and was very close to getting one). Soro should have been subbed off sooner but wasnt, and in time it actually cost Celtic, not that Soro alone was the issue. The manager is on a learning curve too, but this was poor in the eyes of many, albeit various aspects to take pride from too.

It’s the 3rd time we’ve thrown away a two goal lead in Europe in 12 months.

Some fine backs to the wall performances too from Rogic, Ajeti and Jota.

(EP of KDS)

It’s never acceptable to lose four goals. Some of our attacking play tonight, against a very good side, was excellent. Players generally looked composed on the ball, passed it around well and we created quite a few openings. We had clear purpose to our play and for the most part our players were on the same page. All that with a team of players with little experience of playing with their teammates.

Defensively, again for the most part, we coped pretty well. That may sound absurd in the circumstances, but the goals were lost largely due to individual errors rather than our tactical set up. Of course, a more conservative defensive approach should provide less scope for those errors, but it would severely restrict our attacking options with no guarantee of a better outcome. Simply put, if individual players did their job tonight, then our tactical approach would have delivered a win.

Look at their goals. For the first, there was some general sloppy defending, but crucially Jota puts in a weak challenge then the ball ricochets to their player to slot home. The second comes from a CCV mistake when he decided to play offside just as their player is put through. The key element for the third was lazy play from Soro who didn’t match a run then put in a half hearted block on the cross. I can’t imagine he was doing what Ange expected of him. Same goes for Turnbull at the fourth, when he bizarrely headed the ball back to the danger zone rather than out of play.

These players have largely just been thrown together. They were also clearly not our first eleven. It’s inevitable that there will be occasions when their play is disjointed. Any criticism for tonight should be levelled at the Board for the time taken to bring in the players we needed. If these players were brought in earlier, like they should have been, the cohesion within the squad should have been much greater.

Real Betis Balompié @RealBetis_en What a game. What a battle Green heart⚔Four leaf clover Fantastic club, great team, fierce rivals on the pitch Raising hands See you back at Paradise Celtic

Kieran @Kieran_Celtic · 12h That performance with Kyogo, Abada, Forrest and Giakoumakis you’d be coming away with a draw at least. Four shite goals to concede but not a terrible performance. Ferencvaros games are the big ones in this group. Confident we can take Betis at home too

Scott Copeland @tokens67 · 12h Replying to @Moravcik67_ 0-30 and 60-90 was good, just that portion in between Face with tears of joy Think if Mcarthy had started (which he should have), I honestly don’t think Ange would have made a sub!

Moravcik67 @Moravcik67_ · 12h Losing 4-3 in Spain with a stack of players missing is far from the worst result we’ve had in recent times. First half hour was excellent, and we played some really nice stuff. But to lose it from 2-0 up is disappointing. The lack of composure gets us every time.

Celtic show recurring rise and familiar fall in Seville after another narrow away defeat for Ange Postecoglou
The fizz, and then the fizzle, before a smidgen of fizz again. What unfolded for Celtic in their 4-3 defeat by Real Betis was a spirit-sapping rise and fall – save for a late flurry – that may well prove a familiar story across the endeavours for Ange Postecoglou’s men in Europa League group stages this season, particularly away from home.

To begin their Group G campaign with such glimpses of glory, before exhibiting fatal flaws, made the encounter a difficult one from which it is difficult to draw any great hard and fast conclusions. Whether that was a seriously-depleted Celtic – in stunning fashion – storming to a two-goal lead inide 27 minutes in Seville, or them being utterly becalmed with Real Betis, almost casually, knocking off four goals in reply, across little more than 21 minutes of actual playing time. All that before, late on, pulling themselves off the canvas, with an Anthony Ralston headed goal from a flighted-in David Turnbull free-kick in the 86th minute causing the home side to betray the fear.

What requires to be acknowledged is that Postecoglou has now lost, all by a single goal, five of his six away games at the Celtic helm. It is his team’s very openness that could allow them to score three goals in an environment as testing as the Estadio Benito Villamarín – on an evening in which they had 16 goal attempts – but also prove so porous subsequently. You can’t have one without the other in the Postecolgou game-plan. And, even after another gunk of an outcome, Celtic supporters will still be signed up to the strategy he is determined to pursue.

It is natural to wonder what might have ensued had Jota, excellent on the evening, not failed to net when in on goal and with the opportunity to make it 3-0 to the visitors just before Betis began their comeback. Likewise, with Tom Rogic thumping the base of the post midway through the second period, as Celtic stablised following the four-goal salvo from Manuel Pellegrini’s men. Yet, it should not be overlooked that Joe Hart required to make two superb saves early on, either, or that the centre-back pairing of Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt were found wanting, as they were regularly found exposed when Betis realised they were in a game.

No-one expected that turn of events that resulted from Albian Ajeti netting his third goal in two games when he forced in with his chest 13 minutes in following a sctinillating move involving Rogic and Turnbull that allowed the Swiss to turn in a inch-perfect Jota cross from the right. It was a goal initially ruled out, but given after a lengthy VAR review. When Ajeti hurdled a wild challenge from keeper Claudio Bravo leading with his feet to win a penalty approaching the half hour, the penalty conversion from Josip Juranovic seemed beyond Postecoglou’s wildest imagination.

For the constant churn of players under him was reflected not only in the line-up he was forced to field, but its barely passing resemblance to the starting XI he selected only seven weeks ao as they exited the Champions League qualifiers in Midtjylland.

Incredibly only three starters remained from that loss in the form of Ismaila Soro, Ralston and Turnbull. Certainly, the enforced absences in Seville of captain Callum McGregor, Kyogo Furuhashi – who only joined six weeks ago – Greg Taylor, James Forrest, and, through religious reasons, Liel Abada, forced the Celtic manaager’s hand in a number of areas, but the extensive line-up changes more reflected the number of new players he has been required to integrate into his set-up.

Juranovic, Carter-Vickers and Jota were making their European debuts for the Parkhead side, and, with no Taylor, Croatian right-back Juranovic was once again deployed on the left of the back four.

The patchwork nature of the team meant Celtic were encumbered with precious little expectation. All the talk of the 2003 UEFA Cup final in Seville, and the chronicling of the club’s inability to win in a 90-minute game on Spanish soil over 19 attempts, was certainly intriguing preview fodder. For all that Postecoglou spoke in hopeful tones of creating new European memories, there was no belief that a landmark success would be claimed.

The reason why were shown with Betis netting twice between the 32nd and 34th minute, initially too easily cut open by Miranda, who played a one-two to cut through the middle of their defence before slotting in. The equaliser was the product of Carton-Vickers playing Juanmi onside as ball was sent down the right to Borja Iglesias, who squared for the forward to roll in.

The crumble seemed set when, in the 50th minute, Sergio Canales had acres of space down the Celtic right to fashion a cross that Iglesias nipped between Starfelt and Starfelt at the near post to poke in. The marking, the closing down ws then missing when a headed clearance was pounced on by Juanmi, who clubbed it towards goal from 12 yards, his low effort beating Hart in-off his right-hand post.

At that point, it looked like the night could get wholly messy. The fact it didn’t illustrated that, whatever Celtic’s shortcomings, they do not lack gumption or a willingness to keep to their tasks, keeping driving forward. It didn’t allow them to avoid defeat, but they are very much still a work in progress, and there was sufficient evidence to say that they will progress. If they ever have that luxury of a settled team.

Real Betis: Bravo, Montoya, González, Miranda (Álex Moreno 69′), Ruiz, Canales (Rober 82′), Juanmi, Joaquín (Ruibal 54′), Nabil Fekir (Rodríguez 68′), Andrés Guardado (William Carvalho 69′), Iglesias. Subs: Pezzella, Sánchez, William Carvalho, Bellerín, Rui Silva, Ruibal, Álex Moreno, Tello, Willian José, Rober, Akouokou

Celtic: Hart; Ralston, Carter-Vickers, Starfelt, Juranovic; Rogic, Soro (McCarthy 56); Turnbull: Jota, Ajeti, Montgomery. Subs: Barkas, Scales, Urhoghide, Bain, Shaw, Murray, Henderson, Welsh.

Ange Postecoglou pleased to see Celtic stick to playing principles: ‘the kind of team I want them to be’
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou believes his players showed themselves to be “exactly the kind of team I want them to be” despite the failure to hold on to an early two-goal lead in their 4-3 defeat away to Real Betis in the clubs’ Europa League group opener.

HAVE YOUR SAY

And the Australian maintained that their willingness to stick to their attacking principles in Seville, which failed to see them through in conceding four goals inside 21 minutes of play either side of the interval, gives hope for the future despite the final outcome.

“I’m really proud of the players, I think against a quality opponents we took the game to them,” he said of a topsy turvy confrontation. In it, Celtic found themselves two-up inside 27 minutes through an Albian Ajeti striker and Josip Juranovic penalty, before a double from Junmi, and goals from Miranda and Bonja Iglesias, left them with an recoverable deficit by the 53rd minute, despite a late header from Anthony Ralston.

Celtic show recurring rise and familiar fall in Seville after another narrow awa…

“We had our moments in the game when we could have got away from them and unfortunately we didn’t do that and they have some quality upfront and they punished us. The players hung in their right to the end and it was a good game.

I couldn’t ask any more of them. The football we played was exactly the kind of team we want to be. There are still areas to improve. But when you come away from home, score three goals and create many more chances apart from that, I think moving forward there are some good signs there.

“I don’t think there was much between the teams. If people think there was a massive difference I’d hate to think I was watching a different game. There wasn’t much between the teams, we probably had an equal amount of chances, and they probably took more of theirs than we did.”

Postecoglou refused to point to selection issues as any mitigation – despite being denied his captain Callum McGregor, Kyogo Furuhashi, Greg Taylor and James Forrest through injury, and Liel Abada, for religious reasons. “We are trying to build resilience in this group, we don’t want to make excuses, we want to be a certain type of football team irrespective of the circumstances and that’s what the players showed today.”

Anthony Ralston pulled a goal back for Celtic late on but it was not to be enough

Makeshift Celtic let a two-goal lead slip as they fell to defeat against Real Betis in a Europa League thriller.

The visitors – back in Seville 18 years on from Uefa Cup final defeat – roared ahead with an Albian Ajeti finish and Josip Juranovic penalty, with Jota missing a golden chance for a third.

It proved pivotal as Juanmi’s double helped Betis turn the tie with a four-goal blitz in 21 minutes.

Anthony Ralston netted a late header but Celtic could not find a leveller.

Juan Miranda and Bruno Iglesias contributed Betis’ other goals as defeat in the opening game leaves Celtic third in Group G after Bayer Leverkusen fought back to beat Ferencvaros 2-1 in Germany.

Reaction & as it happened

While Celtic took an 80,000-strong travelling support to Seville in 2003, they had to go it alone in the Estadio Benito Villamarin with away fans not permitted.

Celtic have never won in Spain – a 59-year stretch that stood at 19 games – and their prospects were hampered by a lengthy absentee list headed by captain Callum McGregor and Japanese striker Kyogo Furuhashi.

Yet Ange Postecolgou’s men silenced the locals with a terrific start underlined by two excellent counter-attacking goals, before Betis preyed on familiar defensive vulnerabilities in a compelling contest.

Jota almost scampered on to a defence-splitting pass in the opening minutes before teeing up the opener with a cross to Ajeti after a flowing move involving Tom Rogic and David Turnbull.

The ball went in off Ajeti’s chest and, after initially being disallowed for handball, the decision was correctly overturned following a lengthy VAR check.

Joe Hart preserved the lead, leaping to his right to palm away an Andres Guardado header before thwarting the lively Nabil Fekir at the near post.

But Celtic pounced with another piercing counter involving Rogic and Turnbull, whose pass sent Ajeti darting into the box. Former Manchester City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo led with his legs in attempting to save, taking out the striker, and Juranovic’s thumping penalty compounded the goalkeeper’s mistake.

Celtic were in dreamland – and should have stretched their lead to 3-0 before the half-hour mark but Jota’s dinked finish was clawed away by Bravo.

Betis capitalised on the let-off by wiping out Celtic’s lead with two goals in two minutes. Miranda – having rattled the base of the post moments earlier – linked neatly with Fekir to stab a shot past Hart.

Cameron Carter-Vickers was then caught out trying to play Iglesias offside as the striker latched on to Joaquin’s through ball and squared for Juanmi to tap into the empty net.

The turnaround was complete early in the second half as Betis again struck twice in quick succession, with Sergio Canales given far too much space on the left flank to pick out a cross that Iglesias flicked past Hart into the bottom corner.

Juanmi netted his second when he took down Turnbull’s clearing header and redirected it in off the post with a precise half-volley.

It looked a damage limitation job for the visitors, but they regained momentum to put Manuel Pellegrini’s side on edge.

Ajeti had a header ruled out for offside, and Rogic smacked a shot off the post before Ralston powered home a header from Turnbull’s delivery as Celtic went down fighting in another painful defeat in Seville.

What did we learn?

Postecoglou’s tenure is still in its infancy but his side’s European endeavours already have a common theme, with enterprising attacking play undermined by defensive vulnerabilities.

Having built a commanding and deserved lead, Celtic crumbled with alarming ease.

However, in mitigation, the Scottish side were missing so many key players that they can take positives from running Betis – the sixth-best side in Spain last season – so close.

What’s next?

Celtic bid to pick themselves up away to Livingston in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday (15:00 BST) before hosting Raith Rovers in the League Cup quarter-finals next Thursday (19:45).

What the stats say

  • Real Betis are unbeaten in all seven of their home Europa League group stage games (W4 D3). There were as many goals in this match as there were in their previous six such matches in the competition (F6 A1).
  • Celtic remain winless in all 19 of their away games against Spanish opposition in European competition (D3 L16). However, this was the first time they’ve scored more than once in such a game since their first visit in September 1962 (2-4 vs Valencia).
  • Just 156 seconds separated Real Betis’ two first half goals, and just 142 seconds separated their two second half goals in this match.
  • Albian Ajeti’s opener for Celtic was his first in a major European competition, in what was his 11th appearance in either the Champions League (3) or Europa League (8).
  • Real Betis captain Joaquin (40y 57d) became the oldest outfield player to start a Europa League game since Francesco Totti for Roma against Villarreal in February 2017 (40y 149d).
