2021-10-19: Celtic 2-0 Ferencvaros, UEFA Cup

Match Pictures | Matches: 20212022

Trivia

  • KO: 15:30 Tuesday, UEFA Cup match group stage; Match day 3
  • Celtic’s first win in the Europa League group stage after two losses, currently third in the table.
  • Post-note: Kyogo’s goal won Goal of the Group Stage by UEFA! https://twitter.com/EuropaLeague/status/1471810132019396609?s=20
  • Only ONE player starting tonight (McGregor) for Celtic played in the same fixture a year ago v Ferencvaros. Seven of the players from Celtic’s team that night are no longer even at Celtic anymore.
  • Match at the ridiculous time of 3.30pm on a working weekday. In fairness to organisers, only practical time slot possible due to Cop26 climate change conference being held in Glasgow and not being allowed to play in evening as clash with Champions League games. Both Celtic & Sevco at home this week in European matches. Celtic pulled the short straw.
  • Incredible turnout for this game of 50,427 despite the ridiculous matchtime. Very few away fans. Restrictions on areas also due to covid reasons.
  • Green Brigade unveil anti-Uefa banner before Ferencvaros clash as Celtic fans rail against kick-off time. “F*** Uefa. Conundrum clue: Fans before TV.” £12.5k fine!
    Post note:
Celtic fined over this fans’ banner which criticised the scheduling of their Europa League match against Ferencvaros.
  • Boliongoli had a very good game last Saturday in the league BUT has to be dropped as he was not in the squad for the Europa League, which will be disappointing for him.
  • James McCarthy missed the Motherwell game on Saturday due to a small muscular problem. The 30-year-old returned to training on Monday and Ange admitted it has been difficult for the player coming in late.
  • For both sides a key match as both will have noted this as their best chance for three points. Ferencvaros likely will now see their campaign as over (three defeats out of three so far).
  • President Ilir Meta in Glasgow from Albania present at the match. Ex-Celt Rudi Vata and his country’s President are founding members of the Albanian Celtic Supporters Club and there’s seldom a Celtic victory that goes past without the President of Albania welcoming the score on social media.
  • Tabloid report: Ferencvaros beg fans NOT to perform Nazi salutes in and around Celtic Park
  • Cricket: T20 World Cup has begun in West Indies; T20 World Cup – Scotland beat Papua New Guinea
  • Wembley: England have been ordered to play one match behind closed doors as a punishment for the unrest at Wembley Stadium during the Euro 2020 final.

Summary

“Celtic’s first goal yesterday was as beautiful a piece of football as you will see. Kyogo’s finish was composed, measured, cool and sublime – but – there is nothing anyone in the world can do when faced with a pass that renders an entire team redundant and splits them wide open.”
Celtic fan BGT on twitter

“To have this place full, really we could only win, otherwise we would have let the people down.”
Joe Hart

“I don’t pop champagne corks for clean sheets.”
Ange Postecoglou

“What a pass, what a goal!”
Everyone on that goal by Kyogo with the incredible 50 yard pass by Jota

‘For a 3.30 kick-off on a Tuesday afternoon, to have this place full – we could only win, otherwise we’d have really let the people down.’
Joe Hart

“Excellent performance. Thanks to the supporters for turning up in such numbers at a really difficult kick off time”.
Callum McGregor

“My view on that is, if you are a strict vegetarian, you don’t drop into Macca’s just because you are hungry mate, you know? This is what I believe in!”
Ange Postecoglu (Oct 2021)

(BB of KDS):
First half wasn’t great, but we did a lot of side to side and probing without any real penetration. However, it meant ferencvaros never really got a breather and were blowing out their holes with 25/30 to go.

Rogic/Turnbull as an attacking two just isn’t mobile enough for this level.

McGregor is good at keeping it ticking over, but the two infront don’t quite have the athleticism we need. We were a lot more fluid going forward with Bitton on and McGregor further forward, but a lot of that was because we’d tired them out and Bitton had more time on the ball.

Abada needs a rest. This amount of games as a just turned 20 year old is showing.

GG is a unit and a great option. Ajeti not so much.

Kyogo/Forrest/Jota/Johnston/Abada will be very good rotation options. Rotation as in position. Obviously Kyogo is 1st choice.

Hopefully McCarthy/Bitton can show enough and allow us to release McGregor a bit further forward.

Juranovic/Boli a better option than Ralston/Monty.

Joe Hart : Excellent

Jullien to come back. CCV and Starfelt with another game and clean sheet.

Scales looks comfortable enough to play CB or LB and is a tough bastard as well.

A Petrov in this team would be outstanding.

Onwards and upwards.

Twitter:

Etim: If we can get Juranovic and Forrest back in the next couple of weeks…and fully fit (I know I know) that would be a fantastic improvement down the right hand side of the team. Ralston and Abada have done well but those two are terrific footballers & will make the team far better. @agentscotland: You’ll be doing well if you see a better goal than Kyogo’s goal this week in Europe, the vision from Jota and the ability to play the pass then the first touch from Kyogo and the finish, top football from two fantastic footballers.

HP: Two big things in football are confidence and momentum, we appear to have them now. We are no longer playing like a team that has been thrown together, there is an understanding between the players . Small steps , but we are heading in the right direction.

The story of Celtic’s 2-0 win over Ferencvaros: Crowd eruption, time travel, vaccine passports, and showing European credentials

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/the-story-of-celtics-2-0-win-over-ferencvaros-crowd-eruption-time-travel-vaccine-passports-and-showing-european-credentials-3425423

The eruption around Celtic Park when Ange Postecoglou’s men snatched an 81st-minute goal that secured them a 2-0 victory to seal a first Europa League group success of this campaign felt like it produced time travel.
By Andrew Smith
Tuesday, 19th October 2021, 8:12 pm

In that instant, it didn’t feel like Tuesday tea-time in a dreich Glasgow, as scheduling issues had necessitated. Instead, it seemed suddenly to become one of those late night footballing jamborees in continental competition the Parkhead arena has become fabled for, but has been rarely experienced in recent times. More than that, the performance from Postecoglou’s side also was redolent of those type of evenings in pre-pandemic times.

Celtic were far from sparkling for much of the first hour, even if they ended with the juices, and the chances, flowing. However, they found a way, found their rhythm and avoided the sort of foul-ups that have stalked them as they have endured some sobering losses in cross-border competition in recent times.

Of course, it will be pointed out that Ferencvaros aren’t top drawer. They were desperately devoid of ambition. But that has been no impediment to giving Celtic a sore one in their east end home in the past 20 months. It isn’t just the complexion of the team that is taking shape under the Australian. What the victory over the Hungarians illustrated was that the character of his side is developing. It could be witnessed in the assurance of Anthony Ralston and Carl Starfelt as much as the game-changing abilities of Kyogo Furuhashi and Jota – the two players who combined brilliantly for the 57th minute opener from the Japanse striker. And it could be sensed in how Celtic responded to the massive gunk of seeing a potentially matchwinning moment evaporate when Callum McGregor had a 62nd minute penalty saved by Denes Dibasz.

Such a profound setback has tended to be the cue for further following for Celtic since they topped the Europa League group in 2019. The haven’t been able to ride out many rough patches, but they did so with aplomb against their Budapest opponents. For, after appearing to have the welcome break they craved courtesy of Adam Mongomery being shoved to the ground needlessly on the left touchline by Henry Wingo to earn them a spot-kick, there was no sense of dwelling on the agony of failing to capitalise on it. Instead, they simply pushed and probed all the more aggressively for the second goal by other means – precisely what Postecoglou seeks from his personnel.

What typified their approach, and showed most clearly the spirit that won through, was how the decisive strike was earned. McGregor could have been smarting after his penalty was struck at the right height for the keeper to push away at his right. Instead, he drove at a shaky backline and won possession with a full-blooded challenge at the edge of the area. Feeding Jota on the right, it was slap-dash stuff the followed when the ball was fired in by the Portuguese. A fresh-air swipe from David Turnbull led to the ball striking his trailing leg, bouncing off the keeper and then going into the net off Balliant Vescei, as the three players became entangled.

Ferencvaros were broken then, and Turnbull missed a pinch, before Jota had his own glaring squandering of a gloden chance. Yet, Celtic’s control of these closing stages even before they made sure of the three points could be read as a sign of Postecoglou taking learnings. With 20 minutes remaining, the man who will stick to his attacking principles at all costs revealed he won’t be stupid about them in withdrawing Liel Abada and Tom Rogic, and replacing them with Giorgios Giakoumakis and Nir Bitton. The upshot was Furuhashi went wide left and Bitton offered more defensive cover in the centre of the pitch. There are ways to win and sensible shoring up is not a lily-livered means to do so.

The Tuesday, 3.30pm kick-off ensured that the occasion felt around three-quarters-like a European evening. It had more edge and fervour of a Saturday afternoon league game, but not the full raucousness of a stand one – even if the remarkable 50,427 who rejigged all work and family responsibilities to be there did their best to inject some fervour early on.
David Turnbull clinched the match with this second goal.
David Turnbull clinched the match with this second goal.

Celtic could not match that on a day when displaying their credentials extended beyond producing the win to prevent their Group G endeavours fizzling out after three games. With the game the first to be played at Celtic Park in which random vaccine passport checks were required, it was amusing to those at the ground early to see the home players disembarking from the team bus outside the stadium not with phones in hand, but paper copies of their vaccine passports. The oddness of so many elements extended to the mundane nature of the skirmishing between the two teams in the early exchanges. Celtic could not develop much in the way of momentum as they on occasion displayed vulnerabilities – Joe Hart making an early save that he backed-up with a later fine stop.

There had been little for the crowd to get engaged over until their team found themselves under pressure at the start of the second period…and produced an outrageous response. Breaking quickly, an outrageous 50-yard sweeping pass to Furuhashi running through the middle was matched by the forward exquisitely controlling it without break stride before tucking it in at the near post. It was a moment that seemed to light the touch paper.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH

There were many that confidently predicted the shock early season form of Anthony Ralston would prove a purple patch; that a player who couldn’t stand-out in loan spells for St Johnstone and Dundee Unied couldn’t be any more than a stop-gap until Celtic enhanced their then non-existent right-back options. Another thunderous display in Europe suggested that the currently injured Josip Juranovic – that full-back upgrade – won’t simply be a shoe-in when he is restored to fitness. Not when the 23-year-old Scot seemed so assured as he galloped forward to support his attackers and every available opportunity and at the other end was impeccable in producing a terrific saving challenge just before the opening goal.

LETDOWN
Albanian president Ilir Meta waves to the Celtic fans.
Albanian president Ilir Meta waves to the Celtic fans.

Not for the first time, the Green Brigade’s desire to draw attention to themselves, resulted in a discordant moment before kick-off. It came when the self-publicists held up two banners, one a visual mock-up of the Countdown letter squares that in lower case spelled out a derogatory message to UEFA. Below that was another bearing the words “CONUNDRUM CLUE; FANS BEFORE TV”. Oh, what wags they are. Oh, how we all burst our sides. A display that puts the club in danger of receiving another UEFA fine – two years after banner earned them one in Rome. here’s a newsflash for the club’s ultras. As awkward and unfortunate as the staging of the Ferencvaros encounter proved, for more than 30 years Celtic games have been re-arranged for television purposes.

TURNING POINT

It might sound daft to say that Celtic’s 62nd-minute missed penalty proved to be what propelled them to their first win in the Europa League group stages this season. However, the reaction to Denes Dibusz saving from Callum McGregor as the Celtic captain squandered the opportunity to doubled his team’s advantage was truly immense. In such circumstances in continental contests of the recent past, the Parkhead side have allowed such disappointment to give way to calamity. Instead, it only seemed to spur them on, concentrate minds to to ensure they wouldn’t buckle. The clinching second this resulted in felt like scant reward for the raft of chances they engineered as they thrillingly hit their straps.

REF WATCH

The one big call – the 62nd minute Celtic penalty for a Henry Wingo push on the back of Adam Montgomery that Callum McGregor failed to convert – official Jakob Kehlet did not hesitatE before awarding. Mind you, it was indisputable. The Danish referee was in control throughout, succeeded in diffusing a couple of flare-ups, and played advantage smartly on more than one occasion. Will be marked up well by his UEFA delegate.

GAVE US A GIGGLE

It isn’t often in the press box, you look down and two rows in front is a president swaying with a Celtic scarf as he rocks to a rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone. But then, Albanian premier Ilir Meta isn’t like many others in his position. A self-confessed Celtic fanatic, the encounter marked the first time he had experienced a game at Parkhead live, which he did in the company of friend Rudi Vata and his family.

Group G Matchday 3

Celtic Park

CELTIC…1

(Kyogo 57, Turnbull 81)

FERENCVAROS…0

We were promised all-out attacking action from both sides in this do-or-die Group G encounter but most of it, and thankfully the two killer touches came at the sharp end of the pitch for an on-song Celtic side in this early midweek kick-off.

The peculiar kick-off time certainly didn’t deter more than 50,000 wonderful Celtic fans who turned up to urge on the men in green and white to afternoon delight.

If Celtic had scored four, five or six in this relentless display, no one would have been surprised on the day and, if Ferencvaros had pulled anything back when it was only 1-0, it would have been daylight robbery.

Only two attempts, from Kyogo and David Turnbull, counted, though, and if the first goal was sublime, there was a touch of the ridiculous about the second but it mattered not a jot – and neither did an earlier spot-kick that wasn’t converted.

The proceedings very much had the flavour of a domestic game, not only because it was played in daylight, but because of the amount of pressure and possession Celtic had throughout the first half, this could easily have been an SPFL encounter, but the visitors could call on an added bite when pressing forward on the counter-attack.

Jota looked to have taken on the mantle of the man most likely – either to create, or score, the goal that would put the Hoops in front in the first 45.

The first direct attempt, though, came from skipper, Callum McGregor when he tried from long range but the keeper held low.

Jota’s first attempt was from close range but the left-foot of the keeper halted any danger and Denes Dibusz in the Ferencvaros goal foiled the Portuguese winger later on when a net-bound shot from 20 yards was tipped over.

Another chance was created when Anthony Ralston found Jota who floated in a cross, but Kyogo couldn’t get above it.

Not that it was all Celtic by any manner of means, indeed the Hungarians could’ve opened the scoring despite the Hoops springing out of the blocks early when Henry Wingo crossed for Ryan Mmaee as early as the third minute but he fluffed his chance, then later on Myrto Uzuni burst forward with shot, but the first half belonged to Celtic.

The opener was a thing of beauty that started with Jota in the left-back position, he drifted into midfield and, from halfway inside the Celtic half, played a 50-yard ball to exactly inside halfway inside the Ferencvaros half.

Kyogo took an excellent touch, and with his next touch the ball was on its way under the keeper and into the back of the net.

That was in the 57th minute but play immediately rushed to the other end and a goal-saving tackle from Ralston kept the Hoops in front.

Just three minutes later the game could have been put to bed early when Adam Montgomery was brought down in the box, but Dibusz, who had a busy afternoon, saved McGregor’s spot-kick.

The game, though, was put to bed, tucked in and kissed good day just into the final 10 minutes when Turnbull fluffed in front of goal, but got a second chance and bundled the ball over the line – UEFA later decided it was an own-goal – but ask the 50,000 who were there – they weren’t cheering Balint Vecsei!

Celtic: Hart, Ralston, Montgomery (Scales 76′), Starfelt, Carter-Vickers, McGregor, Rogic (Bitton 72′), Turnbull, Furuhashi (Johnston 86′), Jota, Abada (Giakoumakis 71′)

Subs: Ajeti, Bitton, Urhoghide, Bain, Scales, Barkas, Shaw, Giakoumakis, Johnston, Welsh, Soro

Ferencvárosi: Dibusz, Blazic, Civic, Samy Mmaee, Wingo, Laidouni (Somália 67′), Vécsei, Zachariassen (Loncar 66′), Ryan Mmaee, Uzuni, Chol Nguen (Mak 83′)

Celts paint a winning picture for the manager

Honestly, even though we keep using photos of Ange Postecoglou with his hand on his heart, or both arms raised above his head in celebration – they are not the same images all the time – they are different photos taken after each game, it’s just that these are pretty much becoming the accepted after-match image for the Hoops manager.

This afternoon was no different as he celebrated yet another Celtic win – and a vital one at that as the Hoops gave a sign of their intent in this UEFA Europa League Group G run-in as they picked up their first points against a Ferencvaros side who needed the win and the points as much as the Hoops.

The manager said: “I’m really pleased, I thought it was a good performance, a strong performance as they are good team.

“I thought from the start we didn’t let them get in the game, we controlled it and they had to work awfully hard to try to stifle us in the first 45 minutes.

“So we knew if we kept at it, we’d get the opportunities. Our players stuck to their task, they were disciplined, and in the end we got a well-deserved victory.

“We’re never going to be a team that tries to slow things down or just take control for the sake of it.

‘You saw at the end there, at 2-0 the game was over but we were still trying to get a third and a fourth.’

“We want to be relentless and we want the opposition to know we’re going to keep going to the final whistle irrespective of the score, and I think there are good signs that that stuff is slowly coming along.”
20284852.jpg

The highlight of the game was the opener, both the creation and the execution once more, as Celtic seem to be coming up with something out of the ordinary in each game on the goal front.

The manager said: “That was world-class. We don’t have the players to just lump it up the park, it’s not the way we are going to play our football. It takes courage to play it out from the back in tight areas, but we work on that every day with the coaches.

‘It was great to see and then you’ve got the individual brilliance from Jota with the ball, and then Kyogo with the touch and finish.’

“It was as good a goal as you’ll probably see in European competition this week.

“It gives us a chance. We knew a win was pretty much imperative for us to stay in the race and give ourselves a chance.

“So, we have that opportunity, we’ve obviously got a tough trip in a couple of weeks’ time over to Hungary. So that’ll be our next task and we want to be alive for as long as possible, and getting results will give us that opportunity.

“Now our focus is obviously back on the domestic game because we’ve got a big game on Saturday.”

David Turnbull forced Balint Vecsei into an own goal for Celtic’s second goal

Celtic salvaged their Europa League knockout hopes with a hard-fought win over Hungarian champions Ferencvaros.

Kyogo Furuhashi slid home the opener from a sublime Jota pass after a frustrating first half.

Balint Vecsei’s unfortunate own goal confirmed victory after Callum McGregor’s earlier penalty miss had prolonged Celtic’s nerves in Glasgow.

It meant a near full Celtic Park was able to celebrate a first group stage win following a difficult start.

Reaction & as it happened

The opening defeats by Real Betis and Bayer Leverkusen meant Celtic had to win to have any chance of progressing in this competition, a fact acknowledged by manager Ange Postecoglou before the match.

Despite the unusual 15:30 BST kick-off time, partly due to Glasgow’s hosting of the United Nations’ COP26 Climate Conference, a bumper crowd turned out at Celtic Park to help their team on their mission.

They were the more assertive side in the opening 45 minutes but were held at arm’s length by Ferencvaros, who decided to sit off and deny their hosts the space they crave.

Kyogo cut a frustrated figure up front as he struggled to sneak off the shoulder of his markers, with influential winger Jota coming closest with two efforts which Ferencvaros goalkeeper Denes Dibusz did well to keep out.

The Benfica loanee is growing in stature each week at Celtic, and it was his driving run from his own half and pinpoint pass that finally released Kyogo in behind the Ferencvaros backline, as the Japan forward stayed composed to cushion the ball into his path and stroke home the opening goal.

The relief at Celtic Park was evident, and there was further elation three minutes later as Adam Montgomery cleverly drew a foul from Henry Wingo to earn a penalty which gave the home side the chance to all but secure a precious win.

But Celtic have rarely looked convincing for 90 minutes this season and Dibusz read McGregor’s spot kick and dived brilliantly to his left to keep the score at 1-0 and set up a nervous ending.

However, Ferencvaros’ promise of a brave, attacking display failed to materialise as Celtic kept their foot on the throttle, eventually being rewarded with 10 minutes left.

McGregor’s excellent tackle allowed Jota to tee up Turnbull, and despite the Scotland midfielder making a meal of a simple tap in, an attempted clearance appeared to hit off Vecsei and found the top corner.

Postecoglou’s men had later chances to make the win more emphatic – and also a few defensive scares – but ultimately got the win they desperately craved.

What did we learn?

This was a much-needed convincing victory for Celtic on the European stage, having conceded four goals in losing five of their last six Europa League group games.

McGregor was outstanding at the base of midfield, getting on the ball more than anyone, completing all but three of his 107 passes, and recovering possession seven times, pressing brilliantly to win the ball and ultimately tee up the second goal. His importance to the way Celtic play is hard to overestimate.

Another positive was the continued excellent form of Jota, who now has seven goal involvements in nine games for Celtic, and looks like a player with the technical ability to get better and better.

Postecoglou will also be delighted with a second consecutive clean sheet given their defensive frailties this season, although Ferencvaros did not bring the dynamism on the counter attack that was expected, and Joe Hart and Anthony Ralston still had to make crucial interventions to keep the visitors out.

There is still much for this team to prove, but a more settled squad and three straight wins will help to improve cohesion and confidence.
What they said

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “We controlled the first half well and they had to work hard to stifle us a little bit but we still created some chances and denied them any opportunities.

“We knew they’d tire a bit second half because they were working so hard and the game opened up and we got a really good goal. After that, we could have had a couple more.”
What the stats say

Celtic have won six of their eight matches at home to Hungarian opponents in all European competitions (D1 L1), keeping a clean sheet in four of their last five such games.
Including qualifying matches, Ferencvaros have now lost each of their last six matches in European competition, extending what was already their longest run of defeats in Europe.
Celtic have ended a run of 14 Europa League matches without a clean sheet, recording one for the first time since October 2019 at home to CFR Cluj. They had conceded 36 goals across their last 14 matches in the competition.
Kyogo Furuhashi is the first Japanese player to score for Celtic in a European encounter since Shunsuke Nakamura bagged against Man Utd back in November 2006 in the Champions League.
Celtic forward Jota has had the highest number of shots of any player in the Europa League this season (12), though the Portuguese is still awaiting his first goal in the competition.
Since his first full breakout season for Manchester City back in 2010-11, only four other Englishmen have appeared in more European matches (Europa League/Champions League) than Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart (59, excluding qualifiers – James Milner, Raheem Sterling, Chris Smalling and Kyle Walker).
