Trivia

  • KO: 19:45 Wednesday; on Hibs PPV TV; not on Sky
  • Last of the first round of league matches (game 11); Celtic second in the league 2pts behind Sevco, overall an improvement after rough start in the campaign, recovering after being 6pts behind. Momentum with Celtic at present, but all could change in a weekend.
  • Celtic target a long overdue league win at Easter Road, last one was in January 2014 (albeit Hibs were in second tier for some years).
  • Sevco draw 2-2 with Aberdeen after being two down and all down to a late on very dodgy penalty (not a penalty in 100 years). How on earth that was awarded? Well… Anyhow, Scott Brown scored the second at Ibrox for Aberdeen which made all smile.
  • Celtic score from two set pieces. Rogic was excellent but went off injred
  • Reports that ex-Celtic manager Wim Jansen has revealed that he is now suffering from dementia, we wish him & his family all the strength in the world. Jansen is set to bring out an autobiography this week. Titled ‘Meesterbrein’, the book is written by renowned author Youri van den Busken.
  • Reports: Youngsters Liam Shaw and Osaze Urhoghide were added to Ange Postecoglou’s squad but haven’t been deemed to have reached the required standard to force their way into the team.  So set for loans out?
  • Ex-Rangers manager Walter Smith has passed away. RIP. Respect paid to him from across the board.
  • Brian Wilson – Celtic Director – writes this in his obituary of Walter Smith “However by the time his club was caught up in a bewildering series of intrigues and takeovers as well as having being punished in 2012 with demotion for going into administration”. It’s revisionism of the worst, and pathetic, and has caused a ruckus online. Bad timing as director voting elections are up next month.
  • Former Scotland rugby international Sandy Carmichael has died, RIP His grandad Alec Bennett played for Celtic (and Rangers too!), and we believe that Sandy Carmichael was named in his honour (‘Alexander Bennett Carmichael’).
  • Dundee striker Jason Cummings believes the “disgusting” abuse dished out by opposition fans (in particular Hearts) to team-mate Leigh Griffiths (on loan from Celtic) has gone “too far”.
  • T20 Cricket World Cup: Scotland in their first game are hammerred by Afghanistan
  • St Mirren chief Needham issued an apology after some of his posts on social media came to light, referring to Sevco as the Huns & Sevco! The rest of us just laughed at the Huns for their mock outrage! Graham Spiers summarised it well: “John Needham was on my Scottish football podcast 2 months ago: you could not meet a more fun, decent, community-minded man. Today I listened to my favourite Rangers podcast – conspiracies in spades – in which the host solemnly declared: “He wants mass drownings in the Clyde.” “
  • https://twitter.com/GrahamSpiers/status/1452655949991366656?s=20
  • Australia: Adelaide United player Josh Cavallo has come out as gay, becoming only current male professional footballer in the world to do so.

Summary

Ange Postecoglou when asked what it means to move up to 2nd and 2 points behind Sevco: “It just means there’s a long way to go, mate.”

FBoab:
Terrific result with a bonus outcome.
First half was pure joy, second half I lost pictures and had Radio Scotland tell me how rampant Hibs were . Sounded tense, not helped by big Bonner almost willing Hibs to score.
We’ve done brilliantly this month with three big away wins. Not many of us thought we’d be closer to the top as the month ended, but here we are, a referee or two off the top.
Well done Celtic. A monkey off our backs.

geobhoy66 of KDS:
After drawing with utd ,9 points from Don’s, well, hibs away and st johnstone at home, draw would have been acceptable.
To go and get maximum points is brilliant.
Huns dropping 4 points at home in successive games is a huge bonus.
You just need to compare our bench in the last couple of games against who was available to come on against utd to confirm how important it is to have everyone fit.
Things looking good now to forge ahead till the January window where we can further strengthen.

Twitter:

@agentscotland: That was the kind of performance I’ve been waiting to see David Turnbull have for Celtic since he signed, big game, tough venue & I thought he was excellent, still needs to learn not to shoot on sight every single time but I think his overall performance deserves credit tonight.

@bp: Joe Hart wins us points. He’s so far ahead of Barkas & Bain it’s unreal. He will make mistakes over the course of the season & there are keepers who are more comfortable with the ball at their feet but he brings a level of leadership & experience that can’t be quantified by stats

@agentscotland : The Rangers penalty at Ibrox was a complete farce.1. Why was it given?2. Why does Bates not protest? That’s the fifth time this season already that they’ve had huge game changing decisions go in their favour when the game has been on a knife-edge, good fortune once again…

Story of Hibs 1 Celtic 3: How Ange Postecoglou’s side obliterated seven-year Easter Road hoodoo inside 30 minutes
On a night when the teams above them stuttered Celtic made their move and by the end of the evening there was an air of familiarity about the Premiership standings.

After a bold start by a number of challengers, it was a Glasgow one-two at the top of the table, reminding anyone looking to mix things up that a higher degree of consistency will be required to keep pace.

Three goals in the opening half an hour gave the visitors an unassailable lead at Easter Road and set them on their way to the first league win there since 2014.

After giving their rivals a head start the Parkhead side are gathering momentum and while recent history – they have enjoyed only two Premiership wins at Easter Road in the past decade – suggested it would be a tough one, they demonstrated their intent early doors. It left the home defence rattled as first Anthony Ralston, then Cameron Carter-Vickers and also Kyogo Furuhashi exploited their vulnerabilities.

At that period in the game there were plenty to be taken advantage of as Celtic’s pace, fluidity and rapier edge cut them open with great frequency.

It was not the start that Hibs needed. Already on a three-game run of defeats and having dropped out of the top four for the first time in over a season, they have had to look for solutions in a squad hit by suspensions and long-term injury to key personnel.

The last time they had been on such a negative run was at the turn of the year. Back then, they stopped the rot with a draw against Celtic. But Ange Postecoglou’s team are a far more accomplished entity than the one that Hibs faced last season and while they offered Hibs a modicum of hope by allowing them to reduce the deficit in the 36th minute, they never looked like relinquishing their grip on the game.

Ryan Porterous was back in the Hibs ranks after serving his ban for the recent Ibrox red card. After both Nathan Wood and Darren McGregor had been brought in to fill the void, it was seen as a welcome return but it took him a while to settle.

But he was the man credited with Hibs 36th minute goal, although there will no doubt be a prolonged debate with his mate Martin Boyle, with both appearing to go for Joe Newell’s corner. As the ball bypassed Joe Hart on the way into the net, Boyle sprinted off in celebration, looking like a man with a claim.

But, it ultimately mattered very little. Because while the home side upped the performance levels significantly in the second half, as manager Jack Ross sacrificed the defensive presence of Alex Gogic at half-time, throwing young Josh Campbell on instead, Celtic were capable of coping with anything that came their way.

The insecurities and issues that dogged Celtic last season seem a distant memory these days as they closed the gap on table-topping Rangers.

Things might have been different, if Joe Hart hadn’t stepped up to block Joe Newell’s shot at the back post just minutes after Ralston had met a freekick into the area and sent his header home and shortly before Carter-Vickers extended the Celtic lead and ensured the momentum was theirs.

Ange Postecoglou hailed Celtic’s first-half performance against Hibernian as their best during his time in charge.

Anthony Ralston, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Kyogo Furuhashi struck in the opening 30 minutes as the visitors dominated at Easter Road.

Martin Boyle knocked in a corner before half-time but Hibs could not recover from their early mauling.

“The first half was outstanding, probably the best football we’ve played all year,” said Postecoglou.

“The second half was a bit different. We had to defend a bit more because they opened up and threw more bodies forward. I thought we handled it well. There were positive signs in both halves about the team we want to be.”

Postecoglou’s team are now two points behind leaders Rangers after the first round of top-flight fixtures.

“It’s helping us now that we’re a lot more settled and we’ve got some options within the 11 and being able to change the team,” added the Australian. “This was a good performance but we know we can keep on improving.”

As it happened & reaction

In his pre-match interview Hibs head coach Jack Ross said he had not detected any dip in confidence from his players, but he was left to lament an “unacceptable” first 45 minutes as the home side looked petrified at the sight of Celtic streaming forward from the first whistle.

Slumping to a fourth consecutive loss, Hibs were completely overwhelmed by Celtic’s slick interchanges with no apparent appetite for the fight as they sat off passively.

After 14 minutes it was 2-0 and both goals were gifts as Ralston and Carter-Vickers were left all alone to apply a header to a free-kick, then a volley to a corner.

In between, Hibs had a glorious chance to level but Joe Newell wanted a touch before shooting and Joe Hart stuck out a leg to stop the close-range effort.

The third Celtic goal was a sight to behold as Tom Rogic left a trail of defenders in his wake before Jota rolled the ball across goal for Kyogo to tap in.

David Turnbull twice shot wide and Matt Macey made a good save to thwart Kyogo as the one-way traffic continued, but Hibs were next to strike as Boyle was the beneficiary of yet more slipshod marking to nod in a Newell corner.

With Rogic withdrawn due to an injury, Celtic lost some of their fluency after the break as Hibs upped their aggression and drive.

The hosts continued to look vulnerable from crosses as Carl Starfelt and Giorgos Giakoumakis spurned headed chances, but they did spend more time in attack with Hart making an excellent block from Jamie Murphy.
Man of the match – Tom Rogic

What did we learn?

When Celtic are in full flow, they take some stopping. With Rogic running the show before his injury and Mikey Johnston lively in his first start since January. They are the first team in the division to string together four straight wins and that momentum augurs well.

However, Hibs offered little resistance in a one-sided first half and were again left to rue an inability to repel deliveries into their penalty box.

The Edinburgh side lack the midfield energy to press effectively, while Kevin Nisbet has neither the pace or presence to operate as a lone striker and, with a thin squad, head coach Ross does not have many options to change things.
What they said

Hibernian head coach Jack Ross: “First half, we were very poor, second half, we were very good – and that period when we were very poor cost us the game.

“If fans want to be critical, direct it at me. At the moment the players need backing. It’s my team and I need to lead them to better results.

“Saturday is now a massive game for our season. We need to reproduce the second-half performance.”

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou: “We were really fluent, played through the lines and created good chances. We scored three and could have had another three in the first half. It was really pleasing to see, especially here against a good side.

“Joe had to make a couple of saves but that’s why he’s there. He’s an outstanding goalkeeper and an important part of our team because for the most part we’re dominating games and you need a keeper who can make those one or two big saves.”
