Trivia

  • KO: 20:00; Thursday, UEFA Cup/Europa League; Match day 4
  • Must win for Celtic to keep hopes alive of potential top two place. Ferencvaros were already resigned to be out.
  • Celtic move a point behind second-place Real Betis, who were thrashed 4-0 at Bayer Leverkusen, with two games to play in Group G.
  • Celtic have now guaranteed post-Xmas football! If Celtic finish third (currently most likely) then Celtic will fall down to the new Conference competition.
  • Jersey sponsor instead of Dafabet for this match was “Celtic FC Foundation” likely due to local restrictions on gambling advertising.
  • Ferencvaros fans – Some were holding right win and anti-leftwing banners & displays
  • Due to covid – no away fans allowed so no Celtic fans at the game, but some as always still got in.
  • Jullien expected back soon from injury.
  • Carl Starfelt looks set to miss the club’s next two matches after suffering a hamstring injury last week. Welsh back in the side and did very well as did Bitton.
  • Celtic picked up their first away win in major Euro comp since Nov 2019 (2-1 v Lazio in #UEL).
  • First time Celtic have scored 3+ goals in consecutive away games in major Euro comp for the first time since 1970. @OptaJoe
  • And without parking the bus.
  • Tony Ralston signed a new Celtic contract until at least the summer of 2025!
  • Sevco may turn to SPFL for assistance in ensuring there are away fans for the clash with Celtic at Parkhead on January 2. Visiting supporters are allowed back into grounds due to the relaxation of the red zone but Celtic, responding to getting no supporters at Ibrox earlier in the season, won’t give Sevco an allocation.
  • Ex-Celt Peter Grant: Dunfermline have sacked manager Peter Grant after their winless start to their Championship season hit a dozen matches. Full expected. Note: reports last summer were that if Eddie Howe was to take the Celtic role, Grant was going to join his staff (possibly as the assistant)!
  • COP26 climate summit underway: The meeting in Glasgow from 31 October to 12 November could lead to major changes to our everyday lives.
  • Reports Ange Postecoglou could be ready to raid the Japanese market in January. Celtic have been linked with a move for Daizen Maeda who played under Postecoglou and now there has been speculation surrounding Kawasaki Frontale star Reo Hatate, who can play in midfield or at left-back.
  • Former Celtic loanee Charly Musonda revealed he will be a free agent at the end of the season. The Belgian hasn’t played first-team football since being on loan to Vitesse Arnhem in 2019 before a knee injury ruled him out for the season. He said: “Enjoying the final ride, while training and slowly getting ready for what lies ahead, with continued faith and optimism.”
  • STV Report: “Five men will stand trial next year accused of racist chanting on the day of a Rangers [sic!] and Celtic match at Ibrox.” There were NO Celtic fans at this match, so all those on trial will be Sevco fans, STV being pathetic here.
  • Glasgow City Council motion on anti-Irish racism is passed unamended
  • Fifa fines the Scottish FA just over £8000 for Scotland fans booing the Israeli national anthem at Hampden and the display of an ‘inappropriate flag’ (Palestine flag).

Summary

Celtic’s Ange Postecglou: “This is the team we want to be, and our supporters want us to be”

Great stuff. It just wouldn’t have been Celtic in Europe without that last five minutes.

European football after Christmas. For Celtic that’s objective achieved. Betis taking that point against Bayer makes 2nd fairly unlikely.

A mire comfortable win than the scoreline suggests. Great play and dominance in the match with superb goals all round. Teamwork was excellent and the new managerial philosophy is coming together. No poor performances from anyone.

Kyogo, Jota and Abada the scorers and a lot to respect with the quality of their play. Turnbull and McGregor bossed the midfield

Jota with a stunning finish, all started with a good save by Hart and his desire to get the ball moving ASAP, McGregor’s ball to Turnbull committed the defender and it allowed Jota to get a run at the defence, cuts inside and pings one in off the inside of the post. Great goal.

Chris Sutton : Deserved victory for Celtic. Still shoot themselves in the foot but in the main very controlled. Carter-Vickers excellent once again at the back. Kyogo the best player in the country so far this season unplayable at times tonight. Job done.

Twitter:

AgentScotland : Ferencvaros 2-3 CelticBrilliant win away from home from Celtic, three brilliant goals, could and should’ve been more comfortable but given the goals they always seem to lose, you can’t ask for much more, an excellent performance from a team who are on the up.

Celtic’s front three will take the plaudits and rightly so, all three scored and two had an assist but the midfield three were excellent tonight, Bitton, McGregor & Turnbull totally controlled that second half, Turnbull’s workrate is noticeably improving.

Celtic infused with intensity, imagination and a player with finesse – new life breathed into campaign

It is no secret that Ange Postecoglou is a performance coach. The Celtic manager will look beyond the ample reward of European football after Christmas then in reflecting on his team’s 3-2 win away to Ferencvaros. The Europa League success in Hungary, which guarantees that Celtic will at the very least drop down in the Europa Conference League at the conclusion of Group G, was far more impressive than the final scoreline could suggest

Liel Abada celebrates his goal for Celtic.

Until a delightful curling drive from Myrto Uzuni in the 86th minute that reduced the arrears for the Budapest team and created a few scares, Celtic utterly bossed a European group game outwith their own environs in a fashion unheard of in recent times.

Infused with intensity and attacking imagination – Kyogo Furuhashi central to that with a goal and stonking assist – Celtic impressed more than even when triumphing 3-0 away to Anderlecht in the Champions League four years ago. There were successes all over the pitch for Postecoglou, even on a night he deployed all five substitutions, which impacted on their fluency and thrust in the closing stages. Even if it seemed the game was well won with a move and score to make it 3-1 that illustrated all that Celtic excelled on on the night. Callum McGregor was tigerish to win the ball in the centre of the pitch, and composed enough to feed Furuhashi through the middle. In turn, the striker’s ability to deliver with the delicate and delightful led to him producing a perfectly weighted pass to release Liel Abada down the right channel, the winger meeting it first time to guide it confidently into the corner.

It was impossible to know quite what to expect of Celtic following their blunt showing in the scoreless draw with Livingston. There did, though, appeared one certainty about the encounter in the Groupama Arena, and it took only three minutes for it to be banked. For, whatever else might be said about Celtic on the road in European competition, there can be few teams more adept at drawing first blood in unfamiliar environs in continental competition.
Jota was on target for Celtic again.
Jota was on target for Celtic again.

So it was with the sumptuous third-minute strike from Furuhashi that extended Celtic run of scoring first in European away encounters to an incredible 11 games. A period that covers the past 23 months.

That the Japanese phenomenon would bag his 11th goal in Celtic colours in such rapid, and blistering fashion, also seemed to reinforce the folly of Postecoglou resting him for the club’s sterile display at the weekend. The Celtic manager’s reasoning, that he had to protect his totemistic performer from burn-out, was entirely understandable. Furuhashi’s season began in his homeland in February, and the Scottish domestic term will not end until next May.

However, he brings a dimension to Celtic’s central attacking play that elevates Postecoglou’s team. His opener was a case in point. Abada may have shown great alertness to nip in and steal possession from the home side before playing the ball inside to Furuhashi in the centre circle. From that point, there was still oodles for the striker to do though, with markers camped around him. He rose to the challenge with the finesse he produced in shaping to shoot with his right before dragging the ball to his left before passing it into the bottom corner of the net.

As standard as Celtic scoring first overseas is the likelihood of them being pegged back as they had been – at one stage – in eight of their previous ten European away days. It happened again in the 11th minute, when a carelessly over-ambitious hook into the middle from Abada allowed Ferencvaros to pick up possession. The ball spread to the right for Oleksandr Zubkov to be able to fire towards goal and there fortune intervened with his hit deflecting off Josip Juranovic and looping up over Hart. It wasn’t a calamitous counter and the control that Celtic exerted from that point showed they had not been derailed by it. It seemed inevitable they would find their way back in front and did so with a classy 23rd minute strike that followed a clever feint from David Turnbull that set up Jota to drift in off the left and unleashed a curling drive that grazed a defender and clipped the inside of the far post on its way over. Both sides had efforts of the bar in the second period, but it never felt that Celtic wouldn’t find a way to claim all three points and put themselves right back in contention for qualifying from their Europa League group.
Kyogo Furuhashi opened the scoring for Celtic in Budapest.
Kyogo Furuhashi opened the scoring for Celtic in Budapest.

With two games remaining, they are only one point shy of Real Betis with a six haul. With leaders Bayer Leverkusen away up next in a fortnight, they still are outside bets but there is no question that Postecoglou has the makings of a side with plenty to offer. And they certainly offered plenty for an away group win that doesn’t have many equals in the past decade.

Celtic strengthened their hopes of reaching the Europa League knockout rounds with a crucial victory against Ferencvaros in Budapest.

Liel Abada finished an excellent team move to ultimately complete the double over the Hungarian champions, who then set up an anxious finale thanks to Myrto Uzuni’s fine strike.

The visitors led in the opening minutes through Kyogo Furuhahsi, and regained the advantage thanks to Jota after an unfortunate Josip Juranovic own goal had quickly hauled Ferencvaros level.

Celtic move a point behind second-place Real Betis, who were thrashed 4-0 at Bayer Leverkusen, with two games to play in Group G.

Leverkusen are three points clear at the top, while Ferencvaros are stuck on zero and can no longer progress, meaning Celtic are guaranteed European football of some sort after Christmas.

The second-placed team will go to the preliminary knockout round with eight teams dropping down from the Champions League, while third seals a Europa Conference League knockout place.

Reaction & as it happened

Celtic’s victory was more comfortable than the scoreline suggests, although the late lapse that gave the hosts hope was a needless concession.

The Scottish side had revived their European League campaign by winning 2-0 at home to Ferencvaros a fortnight ago, but knew repeating the feat in Hungary was necessary to remain credible challengers for the knockout stages.

Manager Ange Postecoglou had labelled it a must-win and his players did not hang about in a high-tempo attacking performance, surging ahead with a terrific finish from talisman Kyogo.

The Japan forward still had plenty to do when Abada raced on to a stray pass from Eldar Civic and squared to him just inside the box. Kyogo feigned to shoot, flummoxing Miha Blazic, before switching the ball from right foot to left and finding the bottom corner.

However, the advantage was soon wiped out as a combination of carelessness and misfortune cost Celtic. Abada gave away possession in a dangerous area and the ball was worked across to the right, where Oleksandr Zubkov’s attempted cross looped off the sliding Juranovic and over Joe Hart.

There was no let-up in the frantic pace, with Ferencvaros harrying Celtic, who were having plenty of joy when they beat the press.

They regained the lead with a lightning raid instigated by Hart. The goalkeeper got down well to smother a Civic shot, then sprang Callum McGregor to break forward and find Jota on the left flank. The Portuguese winger cut inside and his 20-yard strike flew in off the post via a slight deflection that deceived former Hibernian keeper Adam Bogdan.

Hart denied the hosts another quickfire equaliser with a parry from Uzuni, but Celtic were in the ascendancy and began to tighten their grip on the game.

Only the crossbar kept their lead intact at the start of the second half as Tokmac Nguen’s swerving drive from distance left Hart rooted, but Anthony Ralston then rattled the goal frame with a header at the other end.

Kyogo looked to have given Celtic breathing space with a dink over Bodgan from David Turnbull’s defence-splitting pass, only for Blazic to race back and hook off the line.

Celtic’s third arrived soon after, though, and was a combination of graft and craft. Turnbull tracked back to dispossess Nguen and find McGregor, who quickly shuttled it on to Kyogo. The forward’s brilliant slide-rule pass released Abada down the right to lash a shot past Bogdan from a tight angle.

Celtic were cruising to victory with little stress until substitute Mikey Johnston gave the ball away and Uzuni arced in a fine strike, but Postecoglou’s men held firm for a deserved win.

What did we learn?

Some of Celtic’s attacking football was sumptuous and their risk-and-reward style was vindicated by the thrilling win.

The defence – with 21-year-old Stephen Welsh deputising here for injured centre-back Carl Starfelt – looked rocky at times and invited trouble with some careless possession.

However, this was a team performance that shows continued improvement under Postecoglou as he implements his high-risk philosophy.
What did they say?

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou told BT Sport: “Full credit to the boys. It was three great goals, I thought we could have had a couple more. I’m disappointed at conceding the second goal as I don’t think it was a true reflection of how we played tonight.

“The fact we can get three goals away from home is because we just go at teams. I still think that is the way forward. It’s the kind of team we want to be and I think it’s the team our supporters want us to be.”
What’s next?

Celtic are away to Dundee in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday (12:00 GMT), their last outing before the international break. Their next Europa League assignment is against group leaders Leverkusen in Germany on 25 November (17:45).
Match stats

  • Ferencvaros have lost all four of their games in the Europa League this season, equalling their longest run of defeats in the Uefa Cup/Europa League (four between 1972 and 1977).
  • Celtic picked up their first away win in major European competition since November 2019 (2-1 v Lazio in the Europa League) – it’s just their second victory in their last 10 such games (D3 L5).
  • Excluding qualifiers, this is the first time Celtic have scored 3+ goals in consecutive away games in major European competition for the first time since September-October 1970 in the European Cup (5-0 v KPV and 7-0 v Waterford United).
  • Despite their victory, Celtic have failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their last 10 away games in the Europa League, and have only managed one in their last 25 away from home in the competition overall (1-0 v Rosenborg in November 2018).
  • Kyogo Furuhashi has scored in consecutive games for Celtic in the Europa League (two goals), while he’s the first player to find the net in at least two of his first three appearances for the club in European competition since Kenny Miller in 2006.

BBC
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou praised his front three after they all scored in victory over Ferencvaros to secure European football beyond Christmas.

Kyogo Furuhashi and Jota netted to give the visitors a 2-1 half-time lead in Budapest and Liel Abada’s goal proved decisive in the 3-2 Europa League win.

Celtic are third, a point behind Real Betis with two games to play, and will drop to the Europa Conference last-16 play-off at worst.

“They were great,” said Postecoglou.

Speaking to BT Sport, he added: “We set a platform for them. You can’t discount the fact that our ability to play out from the back gives them opportunities rather than just hitting it long.

“They work awfully hard for the team in a defensive sense and they will get their rewards. It’s great for all three to get goals and three quality goals too.”

Celtic may need a positive result away to group leaders Bayer Leverkusen to keep their qualification hopes alive for the visit of Betis to Glasgow in the final game.

But they have now taken their goal tally on the road in the Europa League to 11 in four matches this season, while victory in Budapest is their first away group-stage win since defeating Lazio two years ago.

“Our objective was to get three points and keep us alive in the group,” added Postecoglou.

“I don’t think it was nervy. The fact we can get three goals away from home is because we will just go at teams. I still think that’s the way forwards for us.”
