Trivia

  • KO: 17:45; UEFA Cup/Europa League; Match day 5
  • Celtic already guaranteed at least third place drop down to the new Europa Conference competition.
  • Celtic now out of contention for qualification to next round.
  • Jota scores a cracking goal and then celebrates by doing some meditation (seriously) with a Buddhist /lotus position sit down.
  • Juranovic shows why again why he is the main penalty taker by scoring a panenka goal.
  • Credit to the Celtic travelling support, they were superb in a half empty stadium, and brilliant to see pics & reports on them from Germany.
  • Chris Sutton banned from Ibrox so BT Sport set to broadcast analysis of Sevco vs Sparta Prague from an empty Celtic Park, with Celtic in Germany!
  • Reports/Rumours: police officer Bernard Higgins to start at Celtic wrt security in January which is very controversial and Celtic fans have overwhelmingly made clear (even at AGM) that they’re against it due to his past history of heavy handed OTT policing of Celtic fans. Basically abuse of power.
  • Celtic support unite via @celtic_shared twitter and release an open letter to the board making clear opposition to proposed appointment of Bernard Higgins (signatories include all the major Celtic CSCs and websites  Inc this one).
  • Former Rangers player John Fleck collapsed on field playing for Sheffield Utd. Rushed to hospital but reports thankfully positive. Rare but still a number of similar incidents over recent years.
  • Parma sack Enzo Maresca. He was heavily tipped for Celtic role before Ange got it and even Howe was favourite for the role after Lennon was cut.

Summary

Ange Postecoglou Speaking to an Australian journalist:
“The European nights are unbelievable. They’re singing you’ll never walk alone and I’m waiting in the tunnel to come out – it just seems surreal to me. That I’m at that club where that song gets played before we go out”

Ange Postecoglou: “We didn’t finish the game off in the way that we could have. But credit to the players, Leverkusen are a fantastic team and we came to their backyard and gave them a game.”

Twitter:

Brilliant game, some effort from both sets of players, Ange wanted to use this game as a marker for how they’ve improved, the goals they concede are still so soft but the improvement in his team from the reverse fixture just 8 weeks ago can’t be denied.

A disgrace the Bayer goalkeeper was NOT sent off for his lunge at Kyogo which could have been very serious. The Referee had to be referred to go review it on the monitor as he gave nothing at first but then gave a penalty to Celtic plus a yellow card to the Bayer goalkeeper. Wonderful Panenka goal by Jaranovic.

Joe Hart was actually superb in goals, unlucky with the scoreline but shows his experience & worth.

Etims: FT Leverkusen 3 #Celtic 2
A brilliant game of fitba.
Game changed when front 3 replaced & Bitton (who was sublime) went off injured. We don’t have squad depth but…what a turnaround in performance from 0-4 home pumping to competing away to same team. More improvement to come

The Celtic Wiki: Lots of positives tonight. We know we don’t have the strength in depth yet. Take the chance to rest players against Betis now.

HP : The difference in the quality of the front 3 compared to those who replaced them was stark,  sucked the impetus right out of us going forward .

A sore result to take , improvement in the team is obvious as is our weaknesses.

AP : Hart stopped that from being a pumping.
Bitton going off upset the defence, finishing front three are’nt the answer.
Improvement but not reached the required level yet. The fact there was hope for a bit is encouraging for next season. Too many lightweights just now.

Story of Bayer Leverkusen 3-2 Celtic: No shame in being competitive
There should not be any real sense that Celtic let a golden opportunity slip from their grasp in the BayArena.
By Andrew Smith

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/story-of-bayer-leverkusen-3-2-celtic-no-shame-in-being-competitive-3472183

Yes, the 3-2 defeat by Bayer Leverkusen that has closed the door on progress in the Europa League may have resulted from the loss of two goals in the final eight minutes of normal time. But it could not be argued that the home side did not deserve their win that has made them unassailable at the top of Group G, and condemned Celtic to the Conference League in preventing them being able to usurp Real Betis.

For all that Ange Postecoglou’s men flirted with the possibility of posting Celtic’s first victory in 13 outings on German soil – courtesy of taking a 56th minute lead with a sublime counter-attacking move that allowed Jota to produce a finish to match – they were not the equal of their hosts. Even when this second goal followed on from them having equalised courtesy of Josip Juranovic netting an outrageous Paneka-style penalty kick that crossed the line via the underside of the bar…the 39th minute spot-kick awarded after a smart VAR spot that keeper Lukáš Hrádecký had horribly wiped out Kyogo Furuhashi as he bounded out to deal with a cross.

There is no shame that Celtic were ultimately second best, that their late undoing means they have now conceded more goals – 13 – than any other team in the Europa League. Postecoglou’s men were competitive in a country in which they have so often failed to make any sort of impression across a host of previous visits. It would be easy to point to Celtic substitutions as turning the encounter. Certainly, the visitors seemed destablised when the commanding Nir Bitton was forced off with injury midway through the period, to be replaced by James McCarthy. Similarly, that could be argued of Postecoglou feeling the need to replace tiring front three Jota, Furuhashi, and James Forrest with Mikey Johnston, Albian Ajeti and Liel Abada.

However, Celtic had already ridden their luck by that point, for all that they had some confident, encouraging spells. Joe Hart seemed anointed just before his team made it 2-1 with a quite ridiculous double save that followed Leverkusen slicing them through the middle after Moussa Diaby outpaced Anthony Ralston. His fired-in low effort that Hart blocked with his legs seemed to only delay the inevitable when the ball then broke to Amine Aldi six yards out of an unguarded net. But Hart turned magician-come-acrobat to scramble across and not only pluck the ball off the midfielder’s toes but clasp it. Just ahead of the break, Celtic had also enjoyed good fortune with Leverkusen striking each post within a matter of seconds.

The flow was all towards the Celtic goal before Leverkusen twice picked them off in ruthless fashion. They were seriously creaking when Ralston slashed at a clearance and sent it to Aldi at the right channel. He was able to switch it to Nadiem Amiri deep on the left with his cut-back driven in by Robert Andrich. Five minutes after this 82nd minute equaliser, Celtic’s were delivered a fatal blow when pulled apart in a move that finished with Moussa Diaby volleying in from 14 yards. It is fair to say we have all been guilty of obsessing over the strike-out strategy that is the hill Postecoglou is willing to die on. It can obscure to one salient fact: what can be wounding to his Celtic is not the “openness” his Leverkusen counterpart Gerardo Seoane said his side would seek to exploit. It can still be simple defending from set-pieces.

There was something depressingly familiar about Andrich being able to run off Ralston and bound in to meet a Florian Witz corner with his jutting head for the home side’s 16th minute opener. Postecoglou has changed much about Celtic, but what proved to be a desperately damaging weakness defending corners and cross balls last season has yet to be effectively tackled. Indeed, the concession was all the more exasperating because Celtic had been delivered a warning minutes earlier when Andrich missed the target from a carbon-copy situation.

Postecoglou will prefer to push the positives of the evening, and these weren’t in short supply for all that Leverkusen were sharper and deadlier when it really counted. Forrest showed all of his crucial worth in a first start since mid-August, never more so than with his part in a quite brilliant build-up for on-loan Benfica winger Jota’s seventh goal in Celtic colours. Hart started it off with a pinpoint kick from his hands that allowed Forrest to produce a delightful back-flick into the path of Bitton. The Israeli’s attempted switch to Jota on left was initially blocked by a falling Jeremie Frimpong but when it ran loose Furuhashi was able to slip the ball to the winger for him to steer an inch-perfect, first time low drive into the corner of the net. The goal made for only the second time that Celtic have scored twice in a game in Germany in 13 such encounters and, remarkably, it was the eighth they have struck in their group travels this season. That the flip side is they have also given up nine in these three away games pretty much says everything about where Celtic are in the here and now.

Celtic’s Joe Hart wows predecessor with astonishing bit of goalkeeping

Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart made a breathtaking save during the Europa League match against Bayer Leverkusen.

With the score tied a 1-1 on 54 minutes, Hart made a point-blank save from Moussa Diaby with his feet, only for the ball to land in the path of Amine Adli with the goal gaping.

However, Hart rushed back to his goal and plunged in front of the young Frenchman near the goal-line, stopping the ball from going over the line and then managing to control it with his hand as the loose ball squirmed away from him.

Minutes later, Celtic went on to score via Jota to go 2-1 ahead, although Leverkusen went on to win the match 3-2 and end Celtic’s hopes of reaching the Europa League knock-out stage.

The save brought a lot of praise for the England international, with former Celtic and Scotland goalkeeper Rab Douglas tweeting: “Joe Hart take a bow. Outstanding.”

Former England winger Trevor Sinclair also hailed Hart, tweeting: “Joe Hart with an 80/20 challenge against him & with his hands and won it to keep the ball out the net.”

Celtic’s hopes of Europa League progression were extinguished after a late collapse condemned them to defeat at Bayer Leverkusen.

The Scottish club were on course for a first win in Germany after fighting back with an audacious Josip Juranovic penalty – awarded after a VAR check – and a second-half Jota strike.

But Robert Andrich, whose header had given the hosts an early lead, equalised in the 82nd minute and Moussa Diaby thumped in the winner to secure top spot for Leverkusen.

It leaves Celtic four points behind second-place Real Betis, who beat Ferencvaros 2-0, with the Spaniards visiting Glasgow next month in their final group fixture.

Celtic were already assured of third place and a Europa Conference play-off spot, where they will face a runner-up from that tournament, but the nature of this defeat will sting after a promising performance.

Reaction & as it happened

The Scots were taught a harsh lesson in finishing when ruthless Leverkusen racked up a 4-0 win in Glasgow in September, but that proved a turning point for Postecoglou’s men, who had won eight and drawn one since.

They had goalkeeper Joe Hart’s heroics – and the woodwork – to thank for a turnaround which would have made history on the club’s 13th visit to Germany.

But Leverkusen’s barrage of late pressure overwhelmed Celtic, who have conceded the highest number of goals in the group stage as their defensive frailties were again laid bare.

They fell behind amid a flurry of early home pressure, having not heeded an earlier warning when Andrich rose unchallenged to head over.

The midfielder made no mistake second time around, running from the edge of the box to meet another Florian Wirtz corner and guide a header in at the far post.

Celtic staged a spirited response, showing composure in possession and pressing with intensity, but were struggling to make inroads in the final third.

When they fashioned a first effort at goal after 40 minutes, it provided the equaliser. Jota swung a dangerous cross into the penalty box and goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky got nowhere near the ball as his attempt to punch clear caught Kyogo Furuhashi flush in the face.

Juranovic – back on penalty duties with Giorgios Giakoumakis injured – was calmness personified with a chipped spot-kick down the middle that kissed the bar on its way in.

The woodwork smiled on Celtic again to keep them level before half-time. Juranovic overran the ball on the edge of the box and Diaby rattled a ferocious angled drive off the near post before Wirtz stabbed the rebound off the opposite upright.

Another scare followed swiftly after the restart, with Hart blocking Diaby’s effort with his legs then diving at the feet of Amine Adli to prevent the winger tapping in.

It was an incredible double save. And Hart was not done there, sparking the move which gave Celtic the lead with a throw out to James Forrest in the opposition half.

The visitors worked the ball slickly into the box where former Celtic full-back Jeremie Frimpong’s slip allowed Kyogo to lay the ball off for Jota to whip a shot past the helpless Hradecky.

With half an hour to go, Celtic were dropping deeper but keeping Leverkusen out as Hart parried an Adli strike over the bar.

The former England international made another terrific stop to divert Adli’s shot over with a foot, even though the 21-year-old looked yards offside, and Celtic were made to rue that decision in the next phase of play.

Nadiem Amiri cushioned a Wirtz cross back to Andrich for an empathic finish through Hart’s legs for the equaliser.

Leverkusen kept up the momentum Diaby lashed home a bouncing strike on the edge of the box from a delicious scooped pass from Wirtz, before Celtic’s David Turnbull had a close-range effort tipped wide in the final seconds as his side’s exit was confirmed.
Man of the match – Cameron Carter-Vickers
The Celtic defender was unlucky to be on the losing side after an excellent display

What did we learn?

This was a far more controlled Celtic display than their hammering by Leverkusen in Glasgow, but Postecoglou’s side were undermined by their failure to protect a lead – or cling on a for a point – in the final 10 minutes.

While averaging two goals scored per game in the group, their 13 conceded is far too many and ultimately the reason why they drop down to the Europa Conference.
What’s next?

Celtic host Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday (15:00 GMT) and complete their Europa League group campaign at home to Real Betis on 9 December (20:00).
