Trivia

  • UEFA Cup KO: 20:00 Thursday, Match Day 6, final group match
  • Celtic finish group stage in third, put out a reserve side for tonight, and will now drop down to the new Conference League competition.
  • Celtic had the toughest EL group of all. Nine points would have been good enough to qualify in four other groups. Sevco qualified out of theirs with eight!
  • Debut for Liam Shaw & Urhoghide. Liam Scales first start
  • Kyogo and Ajeti come off injured causing concerns.
  • Green Brigade fans stay silent during match with Real Betis in protest over controversial potential appointment of Bernard Higgins in senior security role at the club.
  • This was already a dead rubber game for Celtic, third in the group and can’t progress to second whilst Real Betis already thru.
  • Tony Ralston: pleasant surprise of everyone he was nominated to the Team of the Europa League group stages by UEFA for 2020/21, making it in as the best right-back in that stage. Incredible & well deserved.
  • Ex Scotland manager Craig Levein on the radio claiming that a Sevco Fan Referee got an Ibrox gig for his last game and made ‘six clear mistakes’ in favour of Sevco.Tom English moves the conversation on quickly. No need to dwell on that sort of thing. What chance have the rest of us got, eh?
  • Reports: Barkas off to Turkey on loan or permanent. Celtic searching after players in Korea, Japan and Iran.
  • Huge congratulations to former Celtic manager Ronny Deila on winning the #MLSCupPlayoffs Eastern Conference Final with @NYCFC.
  • Sevco support being barred from the Lyon game by the local authorities in France because they are “frequently a source of public disorder” is absolutely gold. The decision was reversed but point made.
  • The National newspaper retracts a disgraceful article on Kyogo where the headline was claiming a former SPL referee calling for Kyogo to be punished if he continues to ‘cheat officials’. Utter nonsense and shows some underlying nastiness. The article was amended but damage done.
  • Reports: Neil Lennon on shortlist for Ipswich Town job
  • Former Hearts chairman Leslie Deans wants Celtic v Hearts game replayed or points forfeited – plus a public apology for Barrie McKay. We all laughed at this nonsense.
  • Politics: The Prime Minister’s senior aide resigned.  The decision came after footage of Ms Stratton emerged at a mock press conference answering questions about a Downing Street Christmas party, despite repeated denials from Downing Street. Calls for PM’s resignation growing.
  • Yahoo Japan reporting a 1 million fee has been agreed between Celtic and Gamba for Yosuke Ideguchi. The report suggests he’ll be in the UK by the end of the month to undergo his Celtic medical.
  • Glasgow born Steve Bronski, the co-founder and keyboardist of British pop trio Bronski Beat, has died. RIP
  • Covid: Further restrictions come back into force in England & the UK due to fears of new Omnicron variant.

Summary

“How are you even supposed to feel after a game like that? Proud, scunnered, euphoric, and raging all at the same time. Supporting Celtic in a nutshell”
Romania CSC

Finally a manager who treats a dead rubber the way it should be. If we lose 5-0 (not beyond bounds of possibility) and one of these guys make a mark then for me it’s worth it. Likewise the ones that show nothing you can get punted in the January transfer window.
Celtic fan & Celebrity Dominic Diamond

“I said to them after the game that’s why we train hard every day and push them to be ready when the opportunity comes and they did that tonight.” Ange Postecoglou On the Match

Delighted for young Henderson a lad who scored a good goal and a player who has come through the academy system with Celtic .. what a fantastic night for him personally and his family .. nice win the Bhoys
John Hartson

(JBC of TheCelticWiki)
This game had near everything despite nothing to play for.
Despite this being a dead rubber match, both teams set out players who had much to prove to everyone and it showed.  Exciting cat & mouse scoreline through the match with Celtic working to keep their noses in front in goals.  Shame for Mikey Johnstone offside for what could have closed out the match at 4-2, with his ‘goal’ chopped off.

That Celtic game was great fun. Goals, chances, shots off the woodwork, missed sitters, brilliant mayhem and a really excellent home win. Celtic had nine players who were 22 years of age or younger on the field tonight. Impressive

Osaze, Shaw and Scales deserve a huge round of applause. Really stepped up and performed extremely well. Very impressed. Get them all games and maybe next season they could be used. Some of the improvements made by Ange are incredible

Celtic 3-2 Real Betis: Kyogo Furuhashi injury scare casts shadow over thrilling win for Ange Postecoglou’s much-changed side

Seldom has a so-called dead rubber proved to be so entertaining and so potentially significant.

Celtic signed off their Europa League Group G campaign with a highly creditable victory over Real Betis achieved with a shadow side as Ange Postecoglou made 11 changes to his starting line-up.

But satisfaction with the display of his fringe men was tempered by anxiety over an injury to key men Kyogo Furuhashi, one of the key men supposed to be having the night off. Having replaced Albian Ajeti midway through the first half, the Swiss striker having pulled a hamstring, Furuhashi appeared to suffer the same fate himself.

Postecoglou must hope it doesn’t entail any kind of lengthy absence for his top scorer.

Betis coach Manuel Pellegrini had made nine changes to his own line-up and it was the side currently riding high in third place in La Liga who actually took longer to settle.

Defensively, they were certainly disjointed in the opening exchanges which saw Celtic profit with Stephen Welsh’s third minute breakthrough.

Betis were fortunate not to concede from Celtic’s first corner, swung in from the right by Liel Abada and met by debutant Liam Shaw whose close range attempt was scrambled wide by Paul Akouokou.

From the subsequent corner on the left, Abada picked out Welsh who wasn’t properly tracked as he glanced a neat header beyond Betis goalkeeper Rui Silva.

It took Betis time to produce a meaningful response but Diego Lainez passed up a glorious chance to equalise when he shanked a shot wide after Borja Iglesias had led a rapid counter attack.

Scott Bain was making his first appearance since the defeat against Hearts at Tynecastle on the opening day of the Premiership campaign in July.

While Joe Hart has firmly established himself as Celtic’s number one under Postecoglou, Bain looked determined to prove he remains a worthy deputy. He produced some fine saves as Betis upped their tempo and started to look more threatening, the pick of them a tremendous reaction stop to deny the visitors’ veteran captain Joaquin.

Bain certainly didn’t deserve the misfortune which came his way in the 69th minute when he touched an Iglesias shot onto his left hand post, only for the ball to rebound off his back and into the net.

The mood around Celtic Park deepened further two minutes later when a visibly upset Furuhashi limped off, although concern over the Japanese talisman was forgotten briefly when his replacement Ewan Henderson restored the hosts’ lead with his first involvement as he stabbed home Mikey Johnston’s low cross.

It was basketball style fare now and Iglesias made it 2-2 when he raced clear onto a Sergio Canales through ball to beat Bain with a smart finish. Back roared Celtic and when Abada’s burst into the Betus box was crudely halted by Edgar Gonzalez, substitute David Turnbull sent Silva the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Celtic (4-2-3-1): Bain, Urhoghide, Bitton, Welsh, Scales, Soro (Turnbull 65), McCarthy; Abada, Shaw (McGregor 65), Montgomery (Johnston 65); Ajeti (Furuhashi 28) (Henderson 71). Subs not used: Hart, Oluwayemi, Taylor, Murray, Juranovic.

Real Betis (4-2-3-1): Silva, Ruibal (Montoya 76), Pezzella, E.Gonzalez, Miranda (Moreno 76); Akouokou, Carvalho (Jose 79); Lainez (Canales 63), Joaquin, Tello (Juanmi 79); Iglesias. Subs not used: Rebollo, Bartra, Ruiz, Guardado, Rodriguez, R.Gonzalez.

HAVE YOUR SAY

Player of the match

There were a few bonus performances from Ange Postecoglou’s perspective with right-back Osaze Urhoghide and midfielder Liam Shaw both acquitting themselves creditably as they made their first team debuts.

But the pick of the bunch in a team which showed 11 changes from Sunday’s win at Dundee United was central defender Stephen Welsh.

The 21-year-old took Celtic’s opening goal smartly and was generally assured at the heart of an untested back four.

Letdown

Celtic’s supporters got full value for the third leg of their £72 Europa League Group G ticket package as goals from Welsh, Ewan Henderson and David Turnbull earned the see-saw 3-2 victory over a Real Betis team riding high in La Liga.

But their night was soured by the injury suffered by Kyogo Furuhashi whose planned night off was scrapped when he was sent on to replace Albian Ajeti midway through the first half.

Celtic will be hoping the 14-goal Japanese forward hasn’t suffered any kind of extensive damage.

Turning point

There were more turning points than on a Formula 1 circuit in this rollercoaster of a contest which belied its status as a dead rubber. But the one that settled it came when Liel Abada was chopped down in the box by Edgar Gonzalez for the penalty which Turnbull slotted home for the winner.

Ref watch

Polish referee Daniel Stefanski dished out five yellow cards and handled the game intelligently, allowing it to flow whenever possible.

There was a debate over whether Celtic midfielder Ismaila Soro should have seen red for his flailing arm towards the face of Diego Lainez in a first half flashpoint but VAR backed the ref’s decision to book both players.

Gave us a giggle

A pitch invasion isn’t really a cause for mirth, especially on European nights when any mention of it in the UEFA delegate’s match report might see yet another fine heading Celtic’s way.

But it was difficult to suppress a laugh when three hefty stewards all tumbled to the turf in Keystone Cops fashion amid their clumsy attempts to apprehend the two young fans who entered the field of play at the end of the first half.

A much-changed and youthful Celtic ended their Europa League group campaign on a high with a dramatic home win over Spain’s Real Betis.

Already bound for the Conference League in February, manager Ange Postecoglou changed his entire starting team but they took an early lead through Stephen Welsh’s header.

Betis levelled twice following a spell of three goals in five minutes – including Ewan Henderson’s strike with his first touch – before David Turnbull’s decisive penalty.

Amid a run of seven games between now and 3 January, Postecoglou had rested his first-choice side but was forced to bring on Kyogo Furuhashi after 25 minutes when Albian Ajeti was removed with a muscle injury.

Crucially the Japanese forward was himself forced off after the break, while Nir Bitton and Osaze Urhoghide both managed to stay on despite clashing heads.

Celtic don’t have depth – Postecoglou
Reaction & as it happened

Celtic will now face one of eight second-place sides in the Conference League for the chance to play in the last-16 of Uefa’s new third-tier club competition, with Bayer Leverkusen and Betis having already sealed the top two spots in Group G.

Manuel Pellegrini made nine alterations to the Betis side who won at Barcelona at the weekend, but they still possessed greater quality and experience than a raw Celtic, who included debutants Osaze Urhoghide and Liam Shaw, with Liam Scales making his first start.

After Welsh flicked home Liel Abada’s corner for the opener, the visitors’ quality gradually began to tell as Diego Lainez went close, before stand-in goalkeeper Scott Bain denied Cristian Tello and Joaquin.
graphic

But they only managed to haul themselves level in the 69th minute when Borja Iglesias’ low shot was tipped on to a post by Bain, before ricocheting back off the Celtic keeper and into the net.

It was unlucky, but despite failing to qualify Celtic have not been short of goals in their group campaign, and responded three minutes later through 21-year-old Henderson, who tapped home Mikey Johnston’s cross just after replacing Kyogo.

Iglesias – who was outstanding for Betis – calmly slotted past Bain when played clean through for an almost instant reply, only for Edgar Gonzalez to bundle over Liel Abada in the box as he streaked through on goal.

Turnbull – one of the 11 players rested from the starting XI – tucked away the resulting spot-kick for the winning goal, but there was still plenty of time for more drama.

First Johnston had a goal disallowed for offside, before the visitors passed up a gilt-edged chance to snatch a draw.

Nine minutes of stoppage time were added due to the head clash between Bitton and Urhoghide, and with one minute of it left Juanmi inexplicably headed into the ground and off the bar from three yards out.

Bitton stood tall to block a follow up shot on the line and clinch a morale-boosting victory for Celtic amid a busy run of games.
Man of the match – Liam Scales
Liam Scales
Scales was influential with more passes and touches than any of his team-mates. The Irishman looked composed.
What did we learn?

It’s probably hard to take much from a dead-rubber game, but there was enough quality and spirit on show from Celtic’s youngsters to encourage Postecoglou.

They used nine players under the age of 22 on the night, with Scales arguably the pick of the bunch with his energy and use of the ball.

If the injuries keep piling up at the current rate, some of these players will be getting more game time as Ajeti and Kyogo were added to the injury-list including Jota, Anthony Ralston, and James Forrest, though the latter pair are expected back soon.

With a cup final and crucial league games – including an Old Firm derby on 2 January – on the horizon, the large squad is being tested to its limit.
Match stats

Celtic have won three of their last four Europa League games (L1), having won just one of their previous 11 (D2 L8).
Their games in the competition this season have contained 28 goals (F13 A15) – more than any other side.
Real Betis have conceded at least three goals in three of their last four European away games, as many times as they’d done in their previous 29 on the road.
There were just nine minutes and 46 seconds between Bain’s own goal making it 1-1, and Turnbull’s penalty.
Henderson scored just 37 seconds after coming off the bench, the second fastest goal by a substitute in the competition this term (Ryan Babel, 21 seconds vs Marseille).
Bain became the first goalkeeper to score an own goal with Celtic in a major European competition (excluding qualifiers).
