  • Kyogo: Medical team ruling on Celtic ace is not good – but Ange Postecoglou unsure of timescale
  • Daily Mail Online make a muppet of themselves by preempting the final result with a story that Celtic dropped points. Should never publish the match report until the final kick in any game!

Covid

  • Levels raised to 4 due to Omicron variant. Mask wearing enforced again etc.
  • Scottish clubs have been given clarity over the Covid-19 guidelines for positive cases. They were advised on Friday that one positive test would mean all those who travelled on the same bus or plane would have to isolate. That, however, is not the case. Only those sitting within two metres of a positive case will be classed as a close contact.

Summary

(joebloggscity of TheCelticWiki) So did this late late victory save Celtic’s league season? Dropped points would have put Celtic six points behind Sevco. It’s hard to disagree.

Ralston is the man of the hour and this more than any other moment sealed his case for being a Celtic player. A Celtic side missing many players squandered a lead that should have been wider in a poor performance, only to see Celtic turn it all around with a late late goal in the 97th minute. Taking in a contentious red card for Starfelt, it was quite a fightback.

Some again questioning Ange’s decision making such as resting Rogic after his recent form. Celtic also not converting enough of the chances made. Lots to consider.

“It’s probably more idealistic than realistic. But if you shoot for the stars, they say you’ll land on the moon. So I’m pushing to get them in as early as possible in the window.”
Ange Postecoglu

“I don’t think some of the decisions went our way but rather than complain, we just win.”
Ange Postecoglou

“For the fans that come up here and they travel, with their work commitments and everything like that – to come up here on a week day and support us, it’s what they deserve, they deserve the three points.”
Anthony Ralston

I think it’s time to talk about “second assists”. Callum McGregors pass for the Celtic opener tonight is the most important in the full phase of play  Second assists are huge…

Twitter:
Alan Muir missing another clear handball against Celtic. I’m sure it’s just a coincidence.

One thing that needs addressed, the standard of refereeing in this country.Completely missing Starfelt being elbowed.Completely missing Starfelt down with a head injury.Completely oblivious to the penalty which should be given in added time.& then the rest.

Starfelt lying in the other half of the pitch with blood streaming out his nose.Referee seen hee haw.

Starfelt elbowed in the face- no yellow card. Resulting head injury- no stop in play.

Bloodied player complains- yellow card.

Players next 50/50 tackle- red card!

For any complaints about injury time. Starfelt was down for about 4 minutes and there was 5 subs. 6 minutes wasn’t enough

Note to the Scottish media: A few dozen fans celebrating on the pitch after a 97th minute winner while down to ten men are not “worrying scenes”. It’s joy, passion and football.

(Bubba of KDS):
all the wailing and gnashing of teeth and ‘league’s over’ pish in the match thread is doing my tits in

this team aren’t getting the credit they deserve

even with everyone fit, this is a team cobbled together and still trying to find it’s way, with a manager dredged up at the last minute and told to build from the bottom up

we went into this game with no strikers or wingers, with one attacker worthy of the name (and he’s not been great), a right-back and two boys in attack, we went down to ten men, we were denied (another) penalty for a clear handball, yet we still showed the character to come up with a magnificent 96th winner from a kid who just refuses to be the utter useless bastard everyone has spent years telling him he is

we’ve dropped two points in the league since 26 September, we’re unbeaten since the livi game the week before, so we’ve been on the kind of run that wins you leagues, we’re in a cup final

i genuinely think it’s a miracle we’re anywhere near this from where we were at the start of june when we had no manager and about 6 players

in saying all that, we are absolutely flying by the seat of our pants here and we really need to get some players back fit

Ross County 1-2 Celtic: Ange Postecoglou’s love of adversity tested to the limits amid dramatic finish in Dingwall

The relish Celtic manager Ange Postecolgou purports to hold for adversity surely was tested to its absolute limits before the extraordinary conclusion that snared his side a winner in the seventh minute of added time at Dingwall.

But, ultimately, his team, denuded of almost their entire attacking armoury beforehand and then reduced to 10-men for the closing stages, weren’t able to dig deep but dig to somewhere subterranean to fashion a 2-1 victory that could be monumental in the title race.

Dramatic doesn’t do justice to the closing stages. It was frantic, frenzied but, crucially, Celtic refused to accept what would have been a huge failure, even as the home players produced absolute heroics with blocked shot after shot as their goal was peppered.

With seconds remaining of the added time – heaved on by referee Alan Muir for a bloody facial injury sustained by Carl Starfelt that inexplicably underpinned the Swede being sent off – Tom Rogic’s craft came to the fore. With a swivel and, with bodies sardine-like around the box, he was able to flip over a cross from the right channel that Anthony Ralston rose above Jordan Tillson to crash into the net.

Bedlam ensued with scores of the Celtic support crammed behind the goal breached streaming on to the pitch, though the invasion was short-lived, Callum McGregor doing his bit to quickly usher the invaders back into the stand.

The captain stood up across the night, as, in the final analysis, did his team-mates. They kept going when it seemed like a fifth straight league win – and 10th in an 11-game unbeaten run – would prove beyond them because of wastefulness, and a slack defensive moment.

The latter came in the form of a 57th minute corner delivered by Blair Spittal that led to Jack Baldwin peeling off Liam Scales to side-foot in.

Just about the first moment of danger the in-form home side had produced as they were dominated by a Celtic playing with fluency and flourish, within 20 minutes the contest seemed as if it could get away from Postecogou’s men completely.

After Muir booked Starfelt for complaining about a flailing elbow from Jordan White that burst his nose open midway through the second period, come the 79th minute the centre-back was dismissed when he barged Regan Charles-Cooke to pick up a second yellow.

The razorsharp movement that had Malky Mackay’s team in a spin should have made the latter stages academic. But, is their won’t, Celtic did not produce the scoring moments to match their authority.

The open they did construct was scintillating, with Adam Montgmoery feeding McGregor to release Scales into space down the left and the Irish defender, on his league debut, laying a cross on a plate for emergency striker Liel Abada to stroke in from close range.

It was a calm conversion, that no-one could anticipate would give way to a storm of a finish.

Ange Postecoglou reacts to ‘overexuberance’ of Celtic fans after Ross County winner sparks pitch invasion

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou sought to make light of the wild pitch invasion triggered by Anthony Ralston’s 97th minute headed winner on a scatty evening in Dingwall.

https://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/celtic/ange-postecoglou-reacts-to-overexuberance-of-celtic-fans-after-ross-county-winner-sparks-pitch-invasion-3496488

Scores of supporters spilled on to the pitch to celebrate with the players over a remarkable denounement that brought their team a 2-1 win in the most trying circumstances. Order was quickly restored before the final whistle seconds later and the Australian petitioned for emotions to be factored into to what led to the madcap scenes.

“When you score a last second goal, not a last minute one, in front of them then you can imagine there’d be some overexuberance there,” the Celtic manager said.

“It was great for them because they have had a long journey and there’s a real bond developing between the team and the fans. Nights like tonight help that as well. The fans have had a long drive up and it’s a long drive home. I hope they have calmed down and stay safe on the roads back.”

Postecoglou affected a composed demeanour on an evening that felt monumental for his side in ensuring they remain within four points of leaders Rangers. Shorn of six attackers beforehand, Celtic down to 10 men for the final quarter of an hour of play following Carl Starfelt’s red-card for two bookable offences – the first for remonstrating with referee Alan Muir over an elbow from Jordan White that left him bloodied. That incident, and the waving away of a penalty appeal in added time for Keith Watson being struck on the arm by the ball in the box, resulted in Postecoglou, unusually, making a veiled reference to refereeing.

“I don’t think we got the rub of the decisions tonight, a few went against us,” the Cetic manager said. “I said to the boys we won’t complain about it, we will just win games and let that speak for itself. A few went against us tonight but we just keep going, playing our football and keep winning. Hopefully these things even themselves out.

“In terms of this group of players, who have been thrown together this last five months, winning like that will add to the belief they have in what we’re doing. It would have been easy to lose their composure when the chaos was happening, but they stayed calm and got their rewards for doing that. That just fuels them going down this road of being a certain kind of football team.”

Last-gasp Celtic winner sparks pitch invasion

Anthony Ralston’s 97th-minute header rescued a dramatic Scottish Premiership victory for 10-man Celtic at Ross County and brought fans spilling on to the pitch in celebration.

The injury-hit visitors led through stand-in striker Liel Abada but looked set to drop six points behind leaders Rangers after Jack Baldwin levelled.

Carl Starfelt was then dismissed for a second booking, but Ange Postecoglou’s men – who face Hibernian in the League Cup final on Sunday – dug deep to summon a sixth straight league victory.

Anguished County’s first defeat in five keeps them above bottom club St Johnstone on goal difference.

Reaction & as it happened

This was a perilous assignment for Postecoglou’s side amid an injury crisis that deprived them of six forwards, with James Forrest and Mikey Johnston the latest casualties.

Celtic’s last trip to Dingwall – a 1-0 defeat in February – spelled the end for previous manager Neil Lennon and this time they faced a buoyant County who had climbed off the bottom last weekend.

However, Celtic soon quelled the hosts’ energetic start and took a stranglehold.

Nir Bitton had a header clawed away from the top corner by Ashley Maynard-Brewer before fellow Israeli Abada made the breakthrough. Callum McGregor picked out Liam Scales’ dart into the left-hand side of the box and the full-back’s cross left Abada with a simple finish.

Scales, on his first league start, McGregor and Abada all threatened a second before the interval – and David Turnbull and Bitton did likewise after the restart – as County clung on.

But the visitors paid for their profligacy as Malky Mackay’s men finally gained a foothold. The introduction of striker Jordan White off the bench gave the hosts the jolt they needed, and his head-flick teed up Dominic Samuel six yards out, only for Ralston to make a terrific block.

From the resulting corner, Baldwin evaded marker Scales to stick out a leg and turn the ball home.

Celtic’s momentum vanished and the sides traded blows in search of a winner. The end-to-end contest looked to have tilted in County’s favour when Starfelt hauled down Regan Charles-Cook to see red.

Josip Juranovic had a free-kick batted away by County goalkeeper Maynard-Brewer, while Joe Hart needed two attempts to gather an effort from County substitute Jack Burroughs.

When Cameron Carter-Vickers had a header tipped over the County crossbar, Celtic looked destined to drop points.

However, full-back Ralston popped up at the back post in the final minute of added time to meet a dinked Tom Rogic cross and sparked delirium among the away fans.

What did we learn?

With so many key players missing, the importance of this win can’t be overstated, as evidenced by Celtic fans’ over-zealous celebrations.

The visitors ought to have been out of sight by half-time, and their tendency to squander chances is a concerning habit for a team chasing the title.

This time, they got away with it – just – and head to Hampden with morale fully intact after the latest chapter in Ralston’s fairytale renaissance from forgotten man under Lennon to key cog in Postecoglou’s rebuild.

County will feel aggrieved at the amount of injury time played, but can take positives from a painful defeat. They were much improved after the interval when they began to ask questions of Celtic’s defence.

White provided a focal point up front and with attacking talents such as Charles-Cook and Hungbo, Mackay’s men look well equipped to climb to safety.
What did they say?

Ross County manager Malky Mackay: “It’s interesting. It’s the seventh minute of added-on time that Celtic scored in. It seemed to be we were playing until they scored.

“I’m disappointed for the boys. I thought they were terrific. I was very proud of them, especially with how brave they were in pressing Celtic high.”

Celtic manager Ange Postecolgou: “Exciting finish, really pleased for the lads. After putting in an enormous shift, we found a way to get a winner and I think it was just rewards for their efforts.

“We weren’t settling for anything. It shows their spirit, especially with 10 men. We had to dig deep. I thought our football was good and we got the three points.”
