Summary

Shambles…. Celtic back down to earth with a crash. Copenhagen vibes.

At every stage Celtic have failed in Europe this season.

Chris Sutton: Bodo/Glimt superb tonight and deserved the win. Well done to them. Celtic too many players not at the level and a disappointing display but maybe a bit of perspective needed. The team have come a long way this season. A good reminder that there is much work still to be done.

ETims: Tactics woeful…sitting back & rarely pressing almost entire first half. Mid disjointed. Rogic & O’Riley balance not right. Jota v poor. Taylor v poor. An off night from too many. Starting to believe own hype? Big reality check.. Massive credit to Bodo/Glimt. Aye a couple of divers but that doesn’t take away from how well they performed. They outplayed us at our own game. V good tactically and technically. Top stuff from our opponents tonight.

Twitter:

@agentscotland: This is the third time in four years Celtic have drawn a team at this stage in Europe who’ve not played a competitive game since before Christmas and they’ve been scudded every time. Big reality check for Celtic tonight, been riding a wave of optimism since the winter break, new signings, some good performances, big wins, turned a league deficit into a lead but there’s still a million miles of hard work to go if they’re going to get where they want to be at.

Couldn’t help be impressed with how Bodo/Glimt pressed Celtic tonight, think only Barcelona and PSG had more men in the Celtic half for such long periods of time in the last 15 years, a very well oiled machine and every single player knew exactly what they had to do every time.

The problem is we seemed totally ill prepared for that possibility. When you look at the two teams, we should’ve been aware that they pressed, and we should’ve had the natural ability to get round it (it’s different when it’s Barca/PSG)

@ap: The problem with sticking to the plan is that when it comes unstuck and the alternative isn’t working you need the big players to turn up and they haven’t. We’re getting beaten at our own game by our own game. They’re decent enough but chances need created never mind taken. That deflected goal sums it up. Not being allowed to put them under constant pressure has been the problem. A decent reminder this season has shown improvement but nowhere near what is required. Pish at home in Europe as usual! The fortress is a myth. There’s always next week!

The improvement has been more marked and quicker than we could have expected, but it’s still not there yet. We got undone by our own tactics used against us, and we’ve seen the pattern often this season where if the early goal doesn’t come, it never looks as if it will.

Ange Postecoglou: Celtic boss reveals what his side lacked and says ‘there were no surprises’

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou lamented his team’s lack of a cutting edge in their 3-1 defeat at home to Bodo/Glimt but insists they can still reach the last 16 of the Europa Conference League.

The Scottish Premiership leaders face a daunting task in the second leg of their knockout round play-off tie against the Norwegian champions, who put themselves in a commanding position with goals from Runas Espejord, Amahl Pellegrino and Hugo Vetlesen at Celtic Park.

Daizen Maeda’s counter for Postecoglou’s side means they will need to win by two goals just to take the tie into extra time in the second leg next Thursday.

“It wasn’t the outcome we wanted and from our perspective it’s a game where they were very clinical in the front third and we weren’t and that was the difference,” said Postecoglou.

“We weren’t clinical and they were – they had two chances, one deflection and they score (with them all).

“We lacked composure in the front third. Obviously goals change the perspective for everyone – they are able to get their goals and we didn’t.

“I thought we were in control in the second half then they got their second goal on the counter. I always know that’s a possibility.

“They then got a deflection for the third and things didn’t work but in the overall context they were more clinical than us in important areas.

“It’s only half-time, so there’s another game to go and we’ll go and play our football and see what we do.

“We’ve just got to go there and play our football again. We’ve scored goals away in tough places so it’s a good challenge for us.”

Postecoglou insists he wasn’t surprised by the sharpness of Bodo/Glimt who were playing their first competitive fixture since December.

“They’ve been in training and not a lot has changed,” he said. “Same coach, same approach, we’d scouted them so we knew what we were getting.

“When they get the first goal, it allows them to sit back a bit more. I still think we got in behind a few times and nothing came of it and we missed chances to be clinical and that gives them a chance to stay composed. There were no surprises. It was a game where they were super-efficient in the front third.”

Celtic left with a mountain to climb as long record comes to juddering halt against classy Bodo/Glimt

Celtic must stage what appears a highly improbable comeback when they head north of the Arctic Circle next week after feeling the heat on home soil against a mightily impressive Bodo/Glimt side.

The Norwegian champions took firm control of this Europa Conference League knockout round play-off tie, taking full advantage of a lacklustre display from the Scottish Premiership leaders.

It ended a 17-match unbeaten run in all competitions for Ange Postecoglou’s side, stretching back to November, and they will now need to conjure up one of their best ever away results in Europe to avoid elimination next Thursday.

But on the evidence presented at Celtic Park, Bodo/Glimt are not a team likely to surrender the commanding position they have established.

From the moment their debutant striker Runas Espejord fired them into a seventh minute lead, they played with an assurance and cohesion which Celtic struggled to cope with and never came close to matching.

After Amahl Pellegrino doubled Bodo/Glimt’s lead 10 minutes into the second half, there was a glimpse of hope for Celtic when Daizen Maeda pulled one back. But that promise of revival was almost immediately snuffed out by Hugo Vetlesen’s deflected third goal for a team who are proving their remarkable emergence, which included a 6-1 thumping of Roma earlier this season, has real substance.

Celtic wouldn’t have been surprised to encounter opponents who were ready and equipped to play them at their own game, Postecoglou having been among those expressing admiration for Bodo/Glimt’s style which very much mirrors his own philosophy.

But given that this was a first competitive outing for the visitors in over two months, the sharpness and effectiveness of their work was perhaps unexpected.

There was certainly no evidence of rustiness as Bodo/Glimt popped the ball around with pace and confidence, equally comfortable doing so as they played out from inside their own penalty area as they were when they made inroads towards Joe Hart’s end of the pitch.

The Celtic defence had no answer to the slick move which produced the early breakthrough goal. It was outstanding one-touch football from Bodo/Glimt, slicing Celtic open as Espejord collected the final pass from Vetlesen and stabbed a low shot beyond Hart.

Celtic struggled to impose themselves on the contest, regardless of how much possession they were able to secure.

Bodo/Glimt goalkeeper Nikita Haikin wasn’t forced into a save of significance until six minutes after the break when he did well to race off his line and block an effort from Maeda.

Just as Celtic seemed to be gathering some attacking momentum for the first time, they were caught cold at the back again. Ola Solbakken jinked beyond Greg Taylor into the box and squared the ball for Espejord to flick it into the path of Pellegrino who took a touch before coolly beating Hart.

Celtic roused the home fans in the 79th minute when Maeda headed home a cross from Josip Juranovic but there was to be no grandstand finish from the hosts. Instead, Bodo/Glimt had the final and probably decisive word when Vetlesen’s shot deflected off Callum McGregor to leave Hart helpless.

Amahl Pellegrino makes it 2-0 to Bodo/Glimt
Amahl Pellegrino knocks past Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart to make it 2-0 to Bodo/Glimt

Celtic have a mountain to climb to reach the Europa Conference League last 16 as Bodo/Glimt eased to an impressive win at a stunned Celtic Park.

Runar Espejord knocked the Norwegian champions into an early lead before Amahl Pellegrino finished a neat move.

Daizen Maeda brought the tie back to life when he headed in, but Hugo Vetlesen’s deflected shot immediately flattened the atmosphere in Glasgow.

It leaves Celtic with a two-goal deficit to chase in Norway next week.

The result brings to an end Celtic’s nine-game winning run, and is their first defeat since losing to Bayer Leverkusen in November.

Reaction & how it happened

The Norwegians have yet to start their season, and Celtic, with 14 goals in their last four games, went at them early to test their visitors’ match sharpness.

Just over a minute was on the clock when Maeda slipped inside his marker and had a sight of goal, but allowed it to run before cutting it back where the defence were able to get it away.

But after that, Bodo/Glimt showed just what a good team they are.

Pellegrino shot down the throat of goalkeeper Joe Hart to fire a warning, but it wasn’t heeded and soon they had their lead.

Kjetil Knutsen’s side knocked one-touch passes around the Celtic defence until Espejord nipped through and got goal-side of Carl Starfelt. Without delay, he poked the ball through a generous gap to notch his first goal for the club.

They continued to frustrate Celtic, even if their own attacking intent waned as the half went on. Dominating possession, slowing down the pace of the game, and cutting out every avenue Celtic tried to play through to lone frontman Maeda.

Celtic had pleas for penalties when Cameron Carter-Vickers was taken out by goalkeeper Nikita Haikin and Jota was tripped, but the offside flag quelled both appeals.

Vetlesen shot over as Bodo/Glimt threatened a second, but the game lacked a spark. The crackle of electricity that had brought this stadium to life against Rangers just over two weeks previous was missing.

But Ange Postecoglou’s side began the second half with a bit more verve and movement. Jota blasted over and Maeda’s shot was charged down as they passed the ball with more purpose and started to work Bodo’s backline.

Yet, less than 10 minutes into the second half it was 2-0 as the Norwegians shredded through Celtic’s defence.

Bodo’s front three all combined in a smart move. Ola Solbakken darted past Greg Taylor, his pass was cutely flicked on by Espejord, and Pellegrino had the easy task of picking his spot in the back of the net.

Celtic needed something to take to Norway. Jota found space and had a shot tipped over the bar, and as they continued to press finally they got their breakthrough to keep the tie alive.

Maeda drifted into the six-yard box and glanced a Josip Juranovic cross beyond the goalkeeper.

But within just two minutes, Celtic’s fire was extinguished in spectacular style.

Vetlesen took aim from outside the box, his shot deflected off Callum McGregor and sailed over goalkeeper Hart.

As the stands emptied Celtic tried in vain to cut the deficit to one again, but little would fall for them on a frustrating night for the Scottish Premiership leaders.

What did we learn?

Celtic’s success recently has been built on pace and movement. It is something Scottish teams have struggled to handle.

But Bodo/Glimt got to grips with it quickly. They held on to possession, exploited gaps, and made Celtic look very ordinary.

Yet the hosts were not terrible. They forced saves, at times passed it well and it is a slice of misfortune with the third goal which restored the two-goal deficit.

But they need a huge performance in Norway next week to keep their European hopes alive.
What they said

Celtic managers Ange Postecoglou: “It’s only half-time. There’s another game to go and we’ll go there, play our football, and see what we do.

“We got ourselves back into the game. They’ve taken a shot from outside the box that’s taken a deflection. Those things happen in football. In a game of football goals change the context of the game and that happened tonight.

“From our perspective we’ve got to go there, play our football again. We’ve scored goals away from home in tough places, it’s a good challenge for us.”
What next?
